Has anyone heard of this company? I had a salesperson call in today and give some spiel regarding how they can save us a load of cash on our printing and photocopying. They apparently have the contracts for a few councils and have offices in the US, too. Just wondered if anyone here's had any dealings.

I'm leaning toward the Eee Box. This is going to be for mainly ICT work, which is mainly going to be word/excel/access and web browsing. Even if D&T want to make use of them, the machines they've been using until recently have been old Celeron machines with 256MB in them.

Anyone got any ideas how this could possibly be accomplished? There are loads of Atom-powered computers available now, so what are the chances of being able to mount them to a monitor?

Strangely I have a batch of machines where the Net Logon service is set to manual startup. Is there any way to change the startup type to Automatic from the command line?

Yeah, firewall is disabled. I've performed a full reinstall of the OS. Everything is now vanilla and I'm still getting the problem, even after a format. The strange thing is, it didn't happen the other day. When I first installed windows, I could access it without issue.

Yeah, it works fine from that end. I've even gone into the machine's security policies to see if the "Allow access from network" setting includes the administrator, which it does. The machine is Service Pack 3 if that makes a difference?

No, sorry, should have been clearer. I'm on a domain machine right now, and the machine I'm trying to access is currently the sole occupier of a temporary workgroup. I'm not trying to access the shares of the machine to accomplish anything in particular, just that I can't access the administrator account in any form from remote machines. One of the symptoms is the username field being greyed out when trying to view shares. Other things like being unable to perform remote admin tasks using purgos have also manifested. They're all intertwined, so if I can find out why the Administrator account is blocked from remote access, I think I'll have solved it. I can log onto the workstation as administrator without any issue.

Cheers for the replies, all. The machine hasn't been joined to the domain yet. Simple file sharing was enabled, but I've now disabled it and restarted the machine and I'm still getting the same problem. I've included a screenshot of the problem.

Strange problem. I'm trying to perform some remote actions on a machine, but it seems that the administrator account is blocked. If I try and access the computer's shares, I get a password prompt, with the username field greyed out, with Guest already selected. All the actions that I'm trying to perform require administrator privileges, which is denied. Any idea what's going on?

I'm a firm believer in the idea of working smart, not hard. It suits my laid-back attitude, too. Today, by replacing a switch, I've accomplished two tasks by design, and a third completely by coincidence. Kind of like a multiplier bonus. We have an old noisy switch near a music room. Because said switch generates a lot of noise, it gets switched off frequently due to the plug being within reach (I will be taking steps to remedy this in future). It's also only a 10-baseT switch, meaning it becomes a little bit of a bottle-neck. So now, not only is that building's network faster, but it won't get turned off in future due to noise! As for the third item on the menu: Upon examining the top of the comms cabinet, I found the key for another room that went missing after being lent to some contractors. Go team! So, what smart things have you done?

We operate a default-deny policy. If the teachers need a site open for use, then we unblock it.

I was a huge fan of Operation Flashpoint, less so of Armed Assault. Personally I'm looking forward to both this and OFP2. I'm just waiting for the specs to be released before I go buying any new kit.

Cheers for both replies. Think I'll try tonyd's approach first, as that way I could set up a little batch script to run every night that would clean out anything over a day old, as that's basically all that would be needed.

I'm wondering if it's at all possible to save a copy of a printed document (preferably on the print server) so that kids can't get away with printing out anything 'unsuitable' and then deleting the document. They're forced to save a copy of their work before they're allowed to print it, but know that if it's deleted afterwards they're in the clear. Any ideas?

Yeah, AMD are a good route. You can get a Gigabyte mATX mobo with HDMI for about £50 from Scan, plus something like the 4850e or 5050e dual-core AM2 chips which are low-power.

To be fair, the desire to mount a computer is a rather strange fetish.

We've been looking for something similar for our technology department. They do a lot of heavy printing in A3. Unfortunately the cheapest ones that I've been looking at are all over a thousand pounds.... I think we'll take a look at the leasing.

Take a look at something like the Brother HL-1440. You could have one on each desk. EDIT: I missed the fact you wanted colour! Ignore me.

Check out similar systems on Novatech and CCL. They come in slightly smaller cases so look a bit nicer. At the moment I'm putting together some systems for the technology department, too. They do work with some pretty large documents, so I'm not too sure about giving them Atom systems.

Has anyone done this, or is thinking about doing this? The vast majority of work done by the kids is word processing etc. and some Flash applications. In an effort to keep costs down (both hardware and electricity) I'm considering the viability of the Atom platform. The dual-core 330 seems like it would be able to cope pretty well....
