Well an nmap scan of the machine says that it's likely not infected, so that's ok. I'd already run one scan of the network when conficker was announced, and all the machines update regularly, so I wasn't too concerned.

This happens in Vista too, by the way. Happened regularly on a print server test setup.

A teacher informed me of a machine reporting the "roaming profile not found" error. After a bit of digging, it seems that neither the Workstation nor Server services are starting after reboot. They start without issue if I log on to the machine and do it manually, so even though they're set to Automatic startup, is there a reason why they're not doing as they're told? I've been browsing the event logs, but nothing's appearing so far.

Originally the plan was to purchase more of the Brother HL-5250DN model that we already have. We've been very happy with their performance so it's with deep regret that I cannot find any suppliers who stock this model any longer. It's been superseded by the 5350, which is another £40 per toner, even for compatibles. So, folks, can anyone recommend an economical mono network printer?

I'm now using the 32bit version (wasted memory, sigh...) and all seems to be running fine. The only difference so far is I've not used any nVidia drivers, other than what MS have made available through windows update. I may tempt fate and try the 64bit version again, but not just yet.

I have the RC installed on a machine with 4GB of 1066MHz memory, Core2Duo and nVidia chipset/Asus mobo. After installing everything was fine for a while, until after a couple of reboots things went downhill. No matter what applications were running, after a variable amount of time (anywhere between two and ten minutes) things would start to lock up. I could be browsing the web, extracting a file with 7zip or downloading windows updates, but things would then grind to a halt. I can move the cursor for a little while until that disappears. Doesn't matter how long it's left in that condition, I still have to perform a hard reset. I suspect it's a driver issue, so I was wondering if anyone's heard of any issues with these symptoms?

In the past (before I started here), any new machines purchased at the school have come with OEM copies of XP. I personally can't be bothered to deal with separate license keys for each machine, and want some kind of volume licensing. That way I can configure one station, and blast it out to the rest. Whenever we've needed new copies of Office (despite my best efforts to go down the OpenOffice route), we've placed an order with Viglen for the number of licenses that we require, and then receive the confirmation of payment for the licenses, plus a license key to use. What I'm wondering is, is there a way to do something like this for Windows?

What are the maximum number of client connections allowed by Ultimate? I foolishly set up a secondary print server on Vista Business, to take some of the load off the primary server. After spending ages trying to figure out why some machines were mapping the printers whilst others weren't, I realised that Business will only allow ten connections. Everything's set up and it works fine until more than ten machines try mapping printers.

There have been a few threads in the past about this, but I wanted to start one afresh. After vandalism in some of our rooms, we're keen on putting up some IP cameras to catch anyone in the act. What I want to be able to do is have the cameras automatically record on movement, and save to a network share. Anything older than a couple of days should be deleted automatically. I'd like to know what's worked for people, and what hasn't. Cheers all.
