neither am i!! In principle its fairly easy to do, in practice not!! Run a competition with the kids! Its how my old school used to put photo's up each year! They had a photocompetition and the top 10/15 won prizes and had their picture framed and put up!

It is just a case of creating an image at the correct dimensions

Meraki is keeping its members on the board, so hopefully that shouldn't be the case. They are also keeping it as a seperate arm called the "Cisco Cloud Networking Group"

Problems with updates expected? What sort of updates firmware?

The Meraki Kit is good it also has built in ability to span bonjour across VLANS which is quite good. The main features for me now using Meraki kit is the Auto-VPN technology and also its teleworker solutions, obviously not quite as important for education but in the private sector with users at home it effectivly can replace the need for a private MPLS circuit!

Granted, it depends on the density obviously for an IT suite where all ports are patched then a 48 port, if its an office area where say 1 in 5 are patched then 24 port.

Havn't used Ruckus but haved used the Cisco kit which I wouldn't recommend. And Meraki Kit which is really good and tends to "just work", although requires some ports outbound to contact the cloud controller.

gliffy seems pretty good for network diagrams, As for patch panels my preferred method is patch panel 48 port switch patch panel patch panel 48 port switch patch panel etc you can then use 0.25 or 0.3m cables to connect it all up.

Meraki certianly do give you out trial units, as it then becomes completely useless if you don't purchase it and a license for the cloud controller, Although they seem a bit slack in asking for them back. At present sitting on my desk is am MR16, MX80 and a MS something or other 48 port poe switch.

Perhaps look at Meraki? Does essentially want you want to do with the Configuration stored in the cloud.

Having run this it doesn't cut the mustard for Education IMHO. Smoothwall is brilliant and something I would love to use again just my clients at the moment don't do filtering being non-education now.

I would rename the new sims server the same name as the old one - although do your clients get the connect.ini file from a mapped drive or local.

Emerge will do the required stuff i think although you are in the same prediciment if somebody doesn't download the data to the device on the days that the fire alarm goes off i think all hell will ensue. Personally i don't think a technical way of doing this is efficient (apart from saving paper etc). I would setup a few batch files which can be saved on the admin staffs machines which are just command reporter scripts to generate all registers to be printed. This could even be tagged to the taskbar so as soon as the admin team hear the alarm quick click wait for it to churn out the report and hit print, have a copier/printer next to the fire escape. although again you have to hope the admin staffs machines have a data connection at the time of the alarm going off...

They are still heavily popular for archive to data - so much so Veeam are actually building in Backup To tape into the product. Veeam to Disk To Tape.

Thats a shame - Intel motherboards are very good. And as said above the OEMS will struggle now as they use them heavily.

Exactly - depending on your requirements for RAM it can actually be cheaper to by new servers with lots of RAM then it is to upgrade the RAM alone.

I seem to remember the is the CPU chips which are not supported in the DL380 G5's and to be honest G5's are probably near retirement age (there has been three generations since). You will also find that things like RAM for these servers is rather expensive. With regards to allowing the auto-update from ESX to ESXI I have done it but then fine odd little issues and prefer to blank wipe and install again.

My New Favorite backup solution is Datto - uses local server for the storage but also has the ability to sync the data with the cloud in a format that is bootable in a DR scenario.
