Xcopy doesn't keep permissions AFIK Robocopy does - and works well. GUI Version Here 2003 Resource Kit which contains Robocopy. Vista has it as standard. HBJB

Unless your files were on a different drive to the one you're installing the recovery software to, you stand to loose some of the files if you keep installing recovery software. I have a nice tool at home that runs from a floppy drive (or cd) and as such does not need to be installed. Can't remember what it's called right now though. HBJB

Unrelated, but I've got a Lenovo 3000 N200 and although the camera is listed in the device mangler I can't seem to find a way to get it working (Vista). HBJB

I'd use Robocopy. It will keep any and all NTFS and share permissions as part of the copy. It comes as part of the Windows Resource Kit ans included in Vista natively. There's a GUI version as well. Resoring from backup may not keep all the permissions and may take longer. HBJB

I only got it paid 'cos I threatened to take a full month off in lue iand then take some holiday at the end of it (I had 137 hours built up). They gave in and paid me - only at normal rate mind but a nice healthy bank balance this month none the less. HBJB

Yeah - I try to do the same and my techie type does a good job of fending off some of the spam calls we get. I do get him to do our website stuff though 'cos he's a whizz at it and I couldn't hope to compete with him. HBJB

Yeah - it does that a lot especialy with the remote agent. If a server has been pulled offline for some reason and I forget to tell it to not back it up it shows the job as failed even though all other servers are backed up fine. HBJB

That's for registered businesses though - I was under the impression that below a certain value, you don't need to declare income of that nature (although taking money for giving someone a lift will invalidate your car insurance). Same goes for gifts/freebies which employers give, so long as the value is less than £x, you're okay. I think... And if I'm wrong, and tax should be paid, then surely the same would apply to bottles of wine, etc and we should be paying the tax on the market value of the item (as you do with company-provided private healthcare, for example)? I wonder if it comes down to exactly how the money/gift is determined. If they choose to give you a bottle of wine as a thank you, that's one thing, but stating "work is carried out for 2 bottles of wine per hour" is different. Don't know, thinking aloud here... You're correct Nick. I had a chat with a relative who's an accountant and she says that it comes under earnings from hobbies or similar. She said she thinks it's about £2000 though - not 5K. HBJB

I have a thread going about the same exact problem and was recomended this company. What a refreshing change to have a friendly voice at the end of the phone who couldn't do enough to help. My laptop was picked up the same day I phoned them and was back and in use by the muppet/member of staff in two days. Top company. HBJB

... so a member of staff threw their laptop at me and said something along the lines of "It's broken - get me a new one". A quick glance at it showed that the power pin had been broken off from the motherboard. "Not my fault" says the member of staff in a huff. "I want a new one now". This dug my heels in instantly and made me put it in the (big) pile of laptops that I need to configure for new staff. Now I've managed to get round to look at getting it repaired it seems that this may not even be worth fixing due to HPs extortionate pricing for service. I'd like to avoid giving a new replacement since I know they won't take care of that one either. How do you guys get this sort of thing fixed and is it usually expensive? Do I have to use HP or are there local repairers that can repair this product cheaply? A quick look at Yell.com shows a few authorized companies but I suspect that they'll be similarly priced to HP. We get virtual memory errors on machines that are running Modeling & Construction but other than that no more than the normal tediousness of running SIMS. HBJB

You'll be able to reclaim some from the temp folders in D&S\%users% and Windows folders. Make sure hibernation is turned off if it's not a laptop. HBJB

Do you have an actual AM registration or is period one treated as AM? if so have you mapped period one as the AM registration? This could be why it's not showing. I can't remember what ours does right now but can check in the morning to see if LM treats it differently from Take Register. HBJB

I believe that you can't change it once SQL has been installed. I changed ours when we moved SIMS servers but I guess you could re-install SQL and choose another path if you're feeling adventurous (and have good backups). HBJB

In theory two or more people in a similar job should do similar things hence the standardisation of pay scales. In practise we know this is not the case though but legally you could just do what you're paid to do, come in at the alloted hours and drop what you're doing and go home, to lunch etc. and pick it up later. Again we know that in our line of work this does not tend to happen. We have a caretaker that does just this. I once saw him carrying a box down a corridor and just set it down undelivered because his lunch break had started. That's an extreme case but theoreticaly it can be done. The changes in my LA are also being touted as an equal rights men v women thing but I have to admit that they seem to be saying 'OK a women earns x doing this job but a man earns x+1 so lets reduce the man to x and then it's fair' rather than getting to some common ground in between or even rasing the woman to x+1.
