To all you guys that remote in - what do you use? I've never been able to get an 'off the peg' application to work. (This maybe down to firewall issues in the SWGfL.) I did manage to connect with Laplink Anywhere but it was so slow and unreliable I gave up on it. I'd love to be able to do my SIMS updates remotely so I don't have to go in on a Sunday to get it done and to also do the odd task sat in the comfort of my lounge with a glass of beer. Cheers, HBJB

Despite getting continually slapped by SLT they still mark them wrong so we have a person that does pretty much nothing else but check them and correct them. She also does TruancyCall. HBJB

Ditto We could'nt get CallParents to work properly at all for a month after we installed it (it would only send one text message) . They insisted it was something on our network that was preventing it from working until I assured them that it couldn't be since it sent the first one OK. Turns out they'd put a limit on for a demo and not taken it off after we bought it. Also the SIMS user I setup for TruancyCall didn't want to work with CallParents and I had to create a new one. (I use a limited account that only has access to what it needs to do.) HBJB

Me too with no problems. A heads up on something I forgot to check though - if you automate backups of the database by batch file make sure you now backup the new databases and not the old ones as I did for a week or so. D'oh HBJB

I'm not planning to run video over the network (although this works well for our signage system with HD - but that's directly cabled). I intend to shut then down remotely. HBJB

Most of our projectors have an off timer but if the PC is left on they often don't react. I've started to buy projector with RJ45 ports that can be centrally managed. Only snag is I've not yet got to cabling to them. That's a task for when I've got more time. HBJB

Not noticed that myself and wouldn't have though it would be the cause anyway. It's got to be an app or service grabbing the focus. Although it happens with the SIMS login box sometimes for no apparent reason. HBJB

LOL - oddly enough I was looking for a solution for an FMS issue today and the KB article that caught my attention instructed me to use the 2006 main CD to re-install FMS. Note to self - disappear for a while so I don't have to do the migration to the SQL version. HBJB

:) We do this now (spent crap loads on servers these last two years). Each server serves a particular purpose (in the main), DC1, DC2, apps, files, MIS, mail, printserver, exams, webserver, files, proxy etc. We mainly use HP Proliant servers all with RAID (0,5,1 often combined) Must be one of the lucky ones - I wonder how long it'll last. It doesn't matter what we or any-one else thinks. In the end all LT can see in front of them is a shiny new school with shiny classrooms and shiny ICT kit. Bugger the consequences! My Head knew nothing about how BSF would affect the in house ICT delivery (primarily because they're not being told by the LA) and has said 'over my dead body will I sign up to that' but everyone knows that it's not the Head's decision in the end - foundation or not and that we'll get TUPED over regardless. Teachers won't care in the main because in my experience they just don't. We're a different and much lower class and we should expect to be treated like dirt! So long as they keep their holidays and get paid more for doing less they'll remain happy(ish). HBJB

I'm trying to argue that case as well at the moment. Science have 4 techs for 8 labs (1:2), Textiles has one tech for two rooms and about 30 sewing machines (1:2) but I have only one tech for 500 odd PCs, 7 full PC suites and all the other crap (at about 50 rooms + offices that equals 1:35 ish). Add to this the fact that they're looking at moving my current tech sideways and replacing him with a part time one and it looks like doom is on it's way. Are the BECTA recommendations enforceable in any way or can they just pick the bits they want to use as so often seems to be the case? HBJB

Ever since the finance department upped the price of photo copies all the staff have started printing out their 200 page documents/letters home/profiles etc on the laser printers (because we don't charge them - YET!). My budget has taken a great big hit this year. It'll all end in tears I can promise you that. HBJV

I once had some knocked up by the CDT department. Worked a treat. I have a stock of old ones from ditched switches but only one set of Netgear ones and I'd like to keep hold of those just in case I end up in the same situation as you . HBJB

My thought exactly. Offline files is a real PITA - even for laptops. VSC is the better option but it won't give access to (old versions of ) files if they're disconnected from the network. HBJB

Stumbled accross this whilst looking for something else. InfraRecorder. Works as a portable app (if you take the zip version) and worked well on the three systems I tested it on (including accross the network). HBJB

I use Proband/IT Index all the time and find not only the prices good but the delivery is invariably on time. I'm not sure why they have to split the orders up sometimes and deliver the separate parcels on different days though (especially since the items are nearly always 'in stock'). We have had to return a couple of items recently one because it was faulty and two UPS units that I ordered incorrectly and got the 120v version. In each case I got the items picked up for free (not bad considering the weight of the UPS units) and had replacements in my office before the old ones were collected. The account manager has got the message now and doesn't try to ring me everything I go onto the website. That was a pain but a friendly chat solved that one. Recommended. HBJB

Quite! We did exactly this and didn't have a single problem on any of our servers. Check your schema after updating though. Go for it but make sure you have good backups just in case. HBJB

LOL - sounds like fun but definitely not worth the agro for a £2 keyboard. HBJB
