  1. We used to use YearOfEntrySurnameInitial = 07SmithB We have now moved to initials+admission number. We changed this so they have the same username on the VLE and the network. It also means their email addresses are fairly anonymous now where as before you knew their surname, initial and which year they were in.
  2. It seems to let you delete some staff but not others. Where we have had staff entered in error, we just but XXX in front of their surname and forename and tick the box not to included them in Census.

    BETT 2010

It was 2nd week of term this year too and last year IIRC

    Profiles

Doesn't that only look in c:\documents and settings? Our profiles for students are in a share elsewhere.

    Profiles

I have a script that trawls the profile share and deletes any folder called profile. Probably fairly easy to modify for your site. I'll attach a copy. Profilefolderdeletion.zip
  6. Well I have to disagree with the wall of cool. I think those little Fizzbooks are great especially in primary school.
  7. so pig for short then?
  8. It is good - I think I only fit it in because I have an excellent team and I pull a lot of late nights. Still I'd rather do that and have decent chunks of time off.
  9. I am on a very similar amount for term time only + 4 weeks. I'm in the North too. Not sure why salaries vary so much.
  10. Sharepoint works perfectly well as a public website. Here is one of the schools in our federation who uses it. I think it's a work in progress so everything might not work https://southlakes.lpplus.net/schools/kirkbiekendal/Pages/Home.aspx We will be going down the same road soon ourselves.
  11. 1.The decision for a VLE rests solely with the educators not the IT staff? Should be a joint decision but the educators view is vital in choosing a system. Technical staff need to have an input and be flexible about what they can and cannot support. 1st hand experience tells me this is not the case and I have evidence of techies rubbishing a product because they don't want to support it (NB Not can't - won't) 2. All VLE's are pretty much the same, they all have the same functionality? To a point they are all similar in functionality. How that functionality is achieved varies greatly and how easy it is for non-technical staff to use the functionality varies too. 3. From the end-users perspective it does nt matter whether the VLE is hosted internally or externally? Tend to agree providing that you have robust internet connections and the VLE provider has a solid, robust infrastructure. Pros and cons for both sides of that argument. 4. A secondary school and feeder primaries would benefit greatly from all using the same VLE? I think they would - it allows continuity and cross phase working to take place easily. Helps greatly with transition work. 5. Most teachers will use a VLE as a replacement for the dumping ground that is the shared network drive? I think most staff will use a VLE in a much more structured way than a shared network drive. We use Sharepoint and staff are uploading documents etc with metatags so they can be searched easily. With the correct training and ethos I see it as being like out shared drive but with greater flexibility and structure.
  12. I wonder if that's why it's all running a bit badly in Kendal too?
  13. We always do the comedy store on Wednesday night - it's impro evening (like Whos Line is it anyway but live) but usually includes the great Josie Lawrence. A top night out!
  14. We had this problem and the November update fixed it. Maybe worth giving Capita a call and seeing if they have a patch as it seemed to be a known issue when I spoke to them.
  15. Kingston 4 GB Data Traveler USB Flash Drive MAC Ok 5 yr wty Same stick from Bluepoint - £4.60
  16. Yes - search for the computer name then in the search results go to view and choose columns. Select Published At Damn! Too slow
  17. We do have meal allowances in our expenses system but to be honest I've never claimed anything as I figure I'd be feeding myself at home anyway. I'm also pretty grateful for my school given they pay my rail fare and hotel bill (which include breakfast anyway). Plenty of people on here aren't even getting to go 'cos their schools won't stump up so I wouldn't too bothered about meals if it were me.
  18. We delete staff accounts the week after they leave (or in September if they leave over summer) but archive stuff to DVD. Students get deleted at the end of the academic year (usually the last week in August) and again are archived to DVD. The DVDs are stored until I get round to a clear out but for a min of 3 years in case exam boards want work etc.
  19. Right, everybody out! Smash the Spinning Jenny! Burn the rolling Rosalind! Destroy the going-up-and-down-a-bit-and-then-moving-along Gertrude! And death to the stupid Prince who grows fat on the profits! Black Adder III, Episode 4 Sense and Senility

    Becta

I want to see sleep classes taught in school - I could teach those classes in my sleep!
  21. See when I glanced down the list of post I misread that as Spec me a PICNIC So pork pie, lemonade, cherry bakewells etc were all on my list!
  22. My best advice would be to contact your support centre and get them to remote in and have a look. If you are new to SIMS/Nova timetabling is definitely not straightforward and you can easily cause more damage than you could imagine.
  23. Aw John - sorry to hear that mate. Never a good time for these things but somehow it always seems worse around significant times of year. Hope you and yours are coping.
  24. Don't know if it affects Cumbria as well but I certainly did't get any notification! Nothing unusual there though - Lancs seems so much better organised than Cumbria.
  25. Doing very little - not a fan of new year tbh and being t total I'll not be getting drunk! I seem to have worked in education so long that Sept 1st seems more like new year and a fresh start each time it comes round! To all those out partying though - have fun. Hope there isn't too much
