Thats basically it. Our staff area and the staff shared area are on two different boxes. I would also want staff to learn to use space efficiently. It's not difficult and in the long run it'll save us money.

If not, I'd think 5k is a bit overkill.

This is something I'd be interested in too. Myself and my colleagues, excluding one, would like to implement a quota. My thoughts on this are, give staff and students maybe 1 or 2GB for their home areas and then any resources that are needed (video, audio, PDFs etc...) can be stored on either the staff departmental resource area or students shared area. Basically my view is that staff should have nothing but personal documents (work related) within their user areas. Anything to be used by other staff should be on a shared area, so that duplicates aren't created. At the moment we have staff areas that can be as big (if not bugger than) 50GB. To me this is ridiculous. The staff memeber with the 50GB user area claims that a lot of that space is used for teaching resources...so why aren't they in your departmental share then?

On a slight side note, has all the Serif software moved to using XML?

@localzuk's method works absolutely fine. Once the allowed groups are added, things are normal until a restricted user tries to log on, at which point they're are given a message about not being allowed to logon interactively. We just implemented this on one machine and it work flawlesly.

I've found that you have to do it via a process of elimination. Remove a program from your blocked list, logon as affected user and try it then repeat the process over and over until you can work out which part needs to be removed.

I'd second that. We use 2D Design and a couple of their machines too and although ours are a bit dated now, they do a wonderful job still. I love watching them cut stuff out, doesn't half fascinate me and wathing the laser machine do it's business is fantastic too but I don't think that's a Techsoft machine.

How did you go about this?

Looks like it's definitely worth the money. The question is, are you totally new to using and administering servers or not? If you are, you may struggle to pick things up at first. If not, then I can see this being quite advantageous. It's something I should well be looking to do myself but haven't the money.

Just a side thought, I 'fixed' a mates laptop where it wouldn't boot. I'm not sure but I think it had a similar problem to yours, turns out the L2 cache on the CPU had failed. SO to get him working, I just disabled it in the BIOS and that allowed him to get working...although a fair bit slower.

I have only once do something on a student's with his laptop and that's because he's from a poor background and his enthiusiasm to get stuck into computers is held back only by that. Otherwise, I refuse point blank to work on a student's computer but I still advise where I can. You might think this is double standards but at the time I wanted to try and give the enthiusiastic pupil a helping hand as I believe he may well be some kind of genius...maybe.

Was about to suggest listening to the HDD but read that Synack got there first. If you listen for the click in a noisy room you may not hear it properly. It's not that common of a problem (at least it hasn't been for me within the last few years) so I can't actually remember whether it's very loud or not.

Treesize Pro is your friend. We used to use it all the time. We only stopped using it because we were told that when deleting files on the network that weren't supposed to be there, that we should notify the staff member first. This then lead to files not being deleted except for when we began running out of space. Then instead of that, we expandedour storage space. Not the way I'd have done it but then again, I'm not the boss.

Have now resolved the DNS issue (basically I hadn't checked a box to create a PTR record). Is anyone with the URL Filter plugin for Smoothwall Express 3 willing to provide me with their ULR Filter backup file so that I can see what other people's setups are like?

Okay, changed back to V3 style layout and calmed down. Speed is pretty amazing though. Although I'm not totally liking the menu layout i.e. instead of file, edit etc... having a Firefox menu button.

Anybody else disapponted that Firefox 4 (and also IE9 or so I'm told) have gone to a Google Chrome layout. I'm sorry but why change from the traditional layout? This has actually quite upset me, I liked my browsers laid out the way they were.

I think this is true for most plants. We had a teacher here who had an allotment and he used to starve his tomato plants every now and again.Apparently if they get too much water, it dilutes the taste and makes them all watery. I wouldn't know however because I hate tomatoes, so never tried any of his.

LATEST UPDATE: After Having Ofsted leave, I now have time to get back onto working with my Smoothwall Express box. I've pointed The box at our ISA server (using it as an upstream proxy). I then pointed IE8 at the smoothwall box using port 800 and the smoothwall box's green IP addres because I seem to have A DNS problem. Basically I don't know what entries (if any) need putting into our DNS for the name to resolve. Any ideas where I've gone wrong? First impressions are pretty good, especially seeing as it's an express box and not a full blown Smoothwall Box (i.e. paid-for). If we get this all working then I can't see why we wouldn't upgrade to a paid-for system.

Good news from Twitter (@MyTeamLotus) Karun Chandhok has been given a reserve driver seat. I think this is quite good news. IMO he is a very underrated driver and It was unfortunate that HRT had to give his seat to Yamamoto last season. Anyone else think the same? Anyone disagree?

It's actually highlighted to me (generally ignorant to politics and the such) just what is going on. Thumbs up for this thread.

We normally use any tools provided to create a customised install or just use the MSI on the disc, which installs using all default settings I believe.
