Well.. there are a handful of ways to authenticate transparently, including one i'm trialling at the minute. All those I have seen use some form of trickery where you are periodically auth'd and then your IP/user pair gets cached - so potential problems if your dhcp lease is too short? I'm trialling a "captive portal" style auth which puts a page up for the user, for username/password, but unlike our regular SSL login page, need not be left open. Still, this means that a user has to web browse before they get proxied - which could be an issue for apps. Another possibility is having the wireless controller pull the auth hard yards and then poke an ip/user pair into our auth system - not really tried this yet, would be interested to talk to anyone who has any experience with this sort of thing. The top answer of course is for google to support traditional proxies AND auth.

Not quite it's a 6xxx, and the battery lasts next to forever, and it makes calls and texts. I *would* like to be able to do a bit more internetsy stuff on the move, but I am not willing to pay so high in battery life/size/touch-screen related irritation. I look at some and think so what, you can play some stupid game about irritated avians, or update your facebook on the train - these are not use cases of a phone for me. You should be putting your internal domains in the "do not proxy for" list. Otherwise the DNS lookup gets done on-proxy. Lets step back a bit from web browsers tho - they confuse matters. Try: $ ping cpsfilesrv1 $ cat /etc/resolv.conf

Prices vary wildly with geography - but it would certainly be worth talking to a few ISPs, that's the only way you'll know for sure.

Have them donate via paypal or some other pre-existing secure mechanism - you do not want to take on that sort of thing yourself - that way madness lies.

Andy, try bumping the auth timeout on the fortinet unit - IIRC they come out of the box with it set quite aggressively.
