Hm. You can't access it at all, or file transfers fail? If it's the latter then try issuing the PASV command in your ftp client, and take the advice of senor monkey up there. If it's the former... well, lets make sure your config is sane.. use the diagnostich checks in AF to make sure it can see the port you are forwarding to. Also make sure you are using the right address form outside the firewall. Another option would be to abandon the port forward and use up one of your options of VPN on the firewall - that would be more secure.

I *think* you can get away with pushing a proxy.pac that is only accessable inside the school... otherwise the auto-config route definitely works.

Egg are lagging - they could at least ask partial passwords, though that won't help if someone's phished the whole lot. OTOH, they now "2 factor" new payees by texting you - highly convenient and quite secure.

FWIW, we used to have faxes (9600 baud modem inside) running over dsl enabled lines, and still run the franking machine update in a similar way. The faxes now get their modem chirpings translated to SIP, before being dumped onto ISDN/PSTN depending on how busy we are. Seems to work, oddly enough.

If you are using transparent proxy, the SSL bits must be going elsewhere. Maybe that's got something to do with it? Is there any connecting factor between all these sites? Sometimes sites upstream get tetchy when all your traffic appears to come from one IP - definitely seen this where it's an LA provided site and the school in question is on a separate ISP.

Try it with XP. If it works with XP its probably an incompatibility with their version of samba, in which case there's a registry hack somewhere to downgrade Win7's more aggressive NTLM requirements

There may be mods for express that do that.. not too sure though. Express4 is likely to include the feature, but it is a way off.

Bloody hell, 60D is "current" now - £825. Camera Price Buster - UKs cheapest camera gear <- might be useful. Screw tech specs. For a start-out camera you'll be fine whatever you get. 1. Try holding the thing in your hands. Make sure it fits your fingers. 2. Then go for one that feels right, and you can get a good price. 3. Then ignore all forums for a week, and ignore "buyer's remorse" - it'll do you no good

IIRC the 550 is quite a lot "better" than the 450. The 1000 is the baby of the bunch, but by no means a bad unit. I ended up with a 40D just because the 50D had been released, and I saw a 40D in PC world. Took an hour but I eventually got the price where I wanted it

If you get an SLR, it will be better for fast moving subjects. Even the cheaper lenses are often a bit "quicker" than their compact counterparts, and button-shutter delay is negligible. You might also consider "burst" shooting - that's standard on all good SLRs. I would go for Canon or Nikon. These are the best SLRs (unless you have mental money) and have thriving second hand lens markets (always good). Personally, I have a Canon 40D. You will find Linux/Windows like zealotry among some when it comes to Nikon or canon (I made sure my wedding photographer shot canon, for example...) but in all honesty neither of them have made a bad SLR yet.
