  1. Welcome to the party guys. Being a sponsor here is officially "a lot of fun" - good choice
  2. Some quality additional advice from those who posted after me - it was even over warm last year despite the foul weather outdoors!
  3. Don't take a laptop or food - you'll be glad of travelling light. Food's expensive, yes, but worth it not to cart your lunch imo. Treat edugeek as your help point - they're better than anything else!
  4. Give me a call after BETT and we'll sort it out (or come to the stand if you're at BETT), but if i'm thinking right you aren't going to have to dig too deep to do what you want
  5. Should be OK, yes.
  6. http://www.ict-direct.co.uk - though the site seems down ATM... I am sure John used to post on here, and a bunch of people on here (myself included) have bought from there. Edit: site back up - the 150 quid HPs are great boxes
  7. Unfortunately, our filtering is quite CPU intensive (due to the dynamic nature of the content filter) and uses a massive amount of RAM (compared to what a router has). Routers are better off with "off box" "is this URL dodgy" type filters - they're not effective against anonymisers but are all you can expect from a very... price competitive... plastic box.
  8. OpenDNS - fairly imperfect as a filter, but not a bad start, and easy to implement at router level.
  9. Heh.. no Gav yet... Simon (new marketing troll... ) and RobF are doing set up. 4 members of "public sector team" will arrive at ~5pm tonight. George and I will be there tomorrow, and I believe we may even be graced with the presence of the odd support agent*! * yes, they are all odd
  10. Be sure to check on the smoothwall winged monkeys when you get there
  11. I've been reliably informed that there's a bit of a dearth of filtering types at BETT this year - naturally we'll be there, and Bloxx are there too, but I think there are only a handful of others this year.
  12. Not *physically* sticky - as in it's a bit "slug in treacle carrying heavy shopping" trying to navigate "full fat" edugeek on an e-ink screen on an EDGE connection in Africa. FWIW, kindle worked perfectly near nairobi, and also in the masai mara (where it got 3G!). Came back from its kenyan adventure with a slight disturbing rattle occasionally(?!) but no obvious problems of bits not working... survived having a brush with some baileys-like drink (Amarula) on the father-in-law's bar as well.
  13. belated merry xmas from sunny kitingela, kenya. i'd post more but i' on kindle and its a bit sticky!
  14. Rob, Dunno if you're a smoothwall user (most schools in pboro are IIRC) but you can delegate "turn room internet off" to teachers...
  15. You need to block instant - it doesn't play nice with search term filtering, which is really essentail to cover all searches other than porn (which is all safesearch blocks)
  16. I thought/hoped that DB was just using the range of sizes to illustrate "range" rather than as an indicator of likely quality.
  17. You bet wrong Sales! (Our dev office do more their own thing tbh)
  18. We have some users like that. Its even worse if they have their own AD at home (now everyone @ Smoothwall knows who this is) so they think its even easier for our poor sysadmin (who is an ex school tech, and an edugeek member I might add).

    Endian Firewall

Do I win a prize for suggesting this was the case earlier?
  20. This is why this sort of thing is well and truly network layer stuff. Get round it on my gateway you little "darlings"
  21. 'sok, I quite like them as gadgets, but not as phones, is all. If I had the pocket space i'd take both
  22. Hmm.. a URL which finishes "huge-di" - is it only me finds that amusing? Well it probably doesn't stand for that... but it certainly ain't going to be "with huge battery and nice keys"
  23. Hm. Think I can probably muster 30 IPs Product add-on that votes AT anyone?
  24. voted. Validation method is something better than a cookie. Hmm.... Ballot stuffing....
