IME it is usually better to go with a 3rd party SMTP relay like mailgun (I believe they still have a free-but-needs-a-credit-card plan). Takes a little setup (eg getting DMARC and SPF set up) but ultimately Microsoft dont want to handle SMTP relay for you, and it's just always haaard...

Smoothwall - Really poor support
tom_newton replied to AlphamaleZed's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Can you ping me your details so I can look into the tickets in question? I know support have had a harder time than normal this last few months, we've lost a few team members, and replacing folks isnt a quick job! -

Smoothwall Cloud Filter - Google, Error too many redirects?
tom_newton replied to AlphamaleZed's topic in Cloud Services
Could be a content modification causing an issue - but stick in a support ticket. As for lag - yes there's some start-up time as the system has to grab any rules changes - though this should be small once it has run once on a machine/profile, as much of it is cached. All tabs will be rechecked after the start-up lag, and there's a built in filter which prevents the sites you really dont want anyone to access. -
Thanks for the support @BKGarry - and I am glad your Smoothwall experience has begun well. One day we will also offer the full classroom experience, but we want it to be absolutely bang on, when we do.

Broadband, Filter, Firewalling in 2026
tom_newton replied to smarties11's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
A reminder that Smoothwall offers hybrid filtering - including doing reports in the cloud which puts less stress on hardware. There's no edu vendor but Smoothwall that matches your requirement, you'd likely need an edu filter plus a-n-other firewall. Happy to talk through what we can offer at some point, drop me a DM and I can take you through all our latest fun developments -
Smoothwall Updates Slowing internet too <1Mb
tom_newton replied to machy's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I believe there has been a regression in Chromium that is causing some issues, which we hope will be fixed soon -
I doubt it is a hardware issue. If it stays up under load, this is something else. What open ports do you have externally? Feels like something might be DoSing you.

Smoothwall blocking Google services

Apparently an issue with the publication of some new signatures. Expect it to be reverted in the next hour -
Smoothwall and Copilot in Teams
tom_newton replied to ITGuyNW's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Monitor will pick up anything the students type into the app, but with the browser based version, you'll get the response going via filter. Drop me a dm if you want a more in depth chat.- 1 reply

VLAN / Smoothwall question - Help!
tom_newton replied to mikkydoos's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Yes, 34 was paused as we found a couple of issues, it will be back shortly -
I came here to say that performance problems can be a real bear in the cloud, it's not usually just a case of "throw some more infrastructure" or "this is a terrible architecture", there can be some real interesting interactions between services, arguably harder to deal with when you are using increasingly cloud native stuff. But if it turns out it's a scale-up-in-the-morning issue, that is hard to stomach, pre-warming (scaling ahead of time) your servers is a good idea when you know traffic peaks are coming.

You're a sponsor, I think it's only cheeky if you try to do it on the sly! I can highly recommend ICT direct from my perspective. Their gear is always top drawer.

That's specifically the Smoothwall cloud solution that's being worked on.

I can tell you the supported solution is with the dev team now - I don't have an ETA, but it's past "we're thinking about it" and into "we're doing it" Tom

Smoothwall - iOS Smoothwall Browser
tom_newton replied to mdking's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Yes - the secret knock couldnt be implemented on IOS - there's various limitations to outbound connections we can make. Tom -
Try visiting that site on the mac If you get a certificate error, you need to push the smoothwall's cert to the mac When you get the username/password, try logging in with an Ad user If that doesnt work, go into authenticaction, add a local directory, and put in a user there with the right group membership, and then use that. The staff member can then make a browser shortcut to go to the login page whenever they need better access

Smoothwall: Filtering For Pupils At Home
tom_newton replied to dhicks's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Yes, Qustodio is fully supported and designed for home devices. I would probably hang fire and wait until the GCPW support is sorted - I know there's a job there for it, I keep chasing. -
Smoothwall: Filtering For Pupils At Home

You can definitely point parents that way yes - talk to your CSM, they can probably arrange a talk for parents to introduce them to it. It's kinda possible to make the extension believe it's on chromeOS all the time (in which case it looks to the browser for login - what you are seeing is extendion installed, but no username, so it wont start) but I think you might cause more problems than you solve. Shared iPad Devices - Protecting Credentials
tom_newton replied to Stephen_UK's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Yes - and if you do that you will get the chance to do proper auth to your smoothwall too - if the problem exists with email accounts persisting you may find the same with filter auth as well!
