I spoke with Chris who runs our digital safety team yesterday - he was working on improving these false positives where sites have javascript lists with every naughty word under the sun (my favourite is the list of words you cant have on the back of a real madrid shirt). As such, I suspect this will improve real soon.

Ahhhh... crikey, not seen this one in years. Smoothwall has a trick to workaround a bug in some browsers where it retries broken NTLM packets, which can cause that. I thought there was a toggle to turn it on and off, but I cant find it off hand. You could always disable account lockouts for password retries for a bit. We really need to be ditching NTLM entirely though - it goes away soon!

I suspect this is more to do with NPS than Smoothwall - the smoothie should only be passively listening to accounting packets

It's a tricky one. For 1:1 ipads I would recommend push the smoothwall browser, and fix the username to the assigned user. For the others, unless you are going to have the kids log in to the ipad, you are really looking at some form of "here's the name of the ipad, let's keep a log of who had it" type system. I would strongly suggest starting with apple shared ipad mode, and getting people used to logging in and out - that's the start of the end of identity problems whichever way the cat jumps

Never underestimate the number of "more experienced" persons on here. Or the bandwidth of a station wagon full of backup tapes.

The challenge here is it's an LA proxy by the looks - they sometimes arent transparent (due to routing oddness between school and proxy, or the need to loadbalance, which is a lot harder transparent). Even though the smoothwall filter is capable of a transparent mode, it might not be straightforward here.

You're thinking of the WPAD dns - a specifically set pacfile is not vulnerable in that way.

If you need somewhere to host the pac file, I would recommend an S3 bucket from AWS (or blob in Azure..) behind a free cloudflare instance (to make sure the blob/s3 never goes above the free tier either)
