I always buy batteries from ebay for the lapbanks at the school and they do last. Had one or two duffs but for £10/15 i wasnt complaining. I manually approve and install update via wsus typically during the holiday. Always book 1 day maintenance of servers and network during each holiday. The only update that is auto approved are the defender/fronted protection updates.

Best practice for snapshots is to take one whilst the vm is in off state. Not saying it wont ever happen but i never personally had a problem merging and taking snapshots myself and I have taken snaps whilst in an on state.

+1 on Mrwoberts comment. Just remember to remove the snapshots once you dont need them as they don't half eat away at your storage. Not so bad if you have a San with tonnes of storage but like some of the primaries we look after have a single HV with maybe 2 tb volume for vhd. It soon consumes it if you don't managed your snapshot well.

The thing with most teachers they praise things that they can see. You upgrade their switching to 10g switching across the whole network they still complain "network is shit and so slow" blah blah blah. You buy them a shiny new 24 inch £150 monitor and suddenly the machine is far quicker and great. They claim they are being more productive and it is no longer holding them back. I know it mentions you shouldn't install wsus but some of out primary do not have the luxury of buying multiple servers. Our basic setup for primaries is a hyper v box 12 gb ram 2tb storage and a backup box usually dpm. Hv hosting 2 x dc and a file server. Normally that is all they can afford. Dc02 has Wds/sccm and wsus role. It seems to work and they are happy for what they have on a shoe string budget. Haven't read why you shouldn't have wsus on a dc but it doesn't seem to cause any issues Once their new budgets come in we would look to upgrading the ram and creating new servers for the individual roles but that always seems to be a fight as they alway prioritise the cash elsewhere.

We use SLG and we have got it to the point where we are happy with it. Granted we have experienced a number of hurdles along the way but all Is good (thru gritted teeth) Had you asked before deploy SLG I would have said no. Avoid it but now your in I would say grin and bare with it. I think what makes it easier now is i have a routine that makes it alot less a pain to deal with. We self host sims and SLG. I Trust my servers more than I do capita. And we deploy users to students and parents. It is a bit of a pain with students as you provision the user's from sims in to ad then consolidate them so that they only have one username and password. Parents use the sims provisioned accounts. Eventually we will look to go to teacher and student app as I have heard only good things so far about it

Funny someone mention memory. I have seen this error which I had originally dismissed as an intermittent fault as I could never replicated the issue myself. However for an unrelated support call the same pc pointed towards bad memory and I never made the connection. Trying running mem test on the installed or try taking a module out and see if you can replicate the symptoms. Im going to ask the user who reported it tomorrow whether they still experience the symptoms. Good shout to whoever suggested it on previous page. You got a thanks from me

DC01 2008r2 all FSMO roles held - Roles planned to be migrated to DC04 then DC01 will be demoted and decommisioned DC02 2008r2 planned to be demoted and decommisioned DC03 2012r2 ADSync - No immediate plans DC04 2016 I have not demoted any of my other dc's yet as I was allowing time for any glitches (like this one to surface) before demoting and decommissioning my 2008dc's Replication between all servers are ok
