Same IP range, and I've specified the DC in the CIFS using both IP and it's hostname on different occasions. Pinging the DC's hostname + IP both work from the 7110 so DNS isn't the issue. Trying to join a invalid AD domain also results in it throwing a DNS based error instead. The time on the DCs and the 7110 are all within 30 seconds of each other. Annoyingly this worked perfectly on the old 2003 R2 domain but it doesn't seem to like the 2008 R2 DCs I've just seen a thread on the sun forums suggesting that (Storage General Discussion - Active Directory broken in 7000-series 2009Q2 release?). Just tried it (leaving the CIFS section blank and then tried again with it completed) and it's now throwing a different error: The attempt to join the Active Directory domain failed for unknown reasons. Check that all properties are correct and try again. If the problem persists, contact your service provider. Anyone encountered that error?

Has anyone had any trouble getting a S7000 to join AD? We're in the process of moving to a new AD domain and despite changing the DNS servers that the 7110 is using and restarting services/restarting the 7110 it keeps giving me the error: The specified domain controller could not be contacted, or the domain is invalid for the controller. Anyone have any ideas?

With regards to the Blades v Pizza Boxes question my personal preference in schools is currently 1U (and 2U) rackmount servers. Particularly with the 1U servers like the X4150 you can get virtually the same amount of processing power into the same amount of rackspace, without the added complexity and possible failure point that a blade chassis gives you. I will concede that a blade chassis can help cut down massively on complicated wiring, but I just don't like all my eggs in one basket Finally FC v Ethernet - fibre channel is great, but it's also expensive. Unless you have huge IO requirements iSCSI/NFS should be fine for your needs. With a SAN like the Sun 7110 this is reduced even further as with its ability to do CIFS out of the box you don't need a fileserver, reducing the amount of IO that needs to go through your virtual servers. Both Xen and VMWare can quite happily bond multiple network cards, and the Sun 7110 can also quite happily bond multiple cards into a single interface which should provide ample bandwidth. If you do find you need more IO you can always buy the fibre add-in cards and fibre switches at a later date. We got 4 x Sun Fire X4150's and a Sun 7110 SAN a few months back. I've been playing with them, and just started setting them up with our new fully virtualised domain. Highly recommend the Sun gear. Unfortunately because the matching grant program is finished if you're looking at getting it right now I'd suggest looking elsewhere unless you can get a good deal on pricing. I know the Sun S7000 (7110) SANs are normally pretty decently priced even outside of the matching grant deal, but I'm unsure about the standard servers. If your not looking to purchase for a couple of months I have heard that Sun are likely to start their matching grant (think buy one get one free on servers and server add ons ) again later this year, but you'd be best off talking to a Sun reseller like the cutter project (who I'd also highly recommend). When choosing our system I looked at a whole host of SAN systems including hardware solutions from HP, Dell, Sun and Hitachi and software solutions including OpenFiler and SANmelody. For us the Sun solution was the most cost effective for what we wanted

Thanks Ric_ - I've actually ended up using CentOS for my new Linux VMs on Xen. I'm usually a debian man myself, but after playing with the XenServer CentOS for the past two weeks and since it seemed to be better supported I opted for that @cookie_monster the default bonding mode is bonding-slb (mode 7) which I've struggled to find much on. What I have read (most of it is on the Citrix Xen Forums!) is that it doesn't require any switch support. According to XenServer Documentation traffic will only be going out over a single interface at a time so hopefully no problems will occur! If you want to use another bonding mode (like LACP/802.3ad) then it is possible to modify the XenServer network scripts to use this, but it is an unsupported configuration .

Looking forward to this for our system as well! Will be nice to have a record of every member of staff and student agreeing to the AUP

I did manage to log about 15 hours about 8-9 years ago and was ready to start taking the various exams and going on cross country flights (and starting to prepare for the solo flight!), but unfortunately I didn't have the time to continue I'm hoping in a few years to really dedicate some time to it and start it up again and get my PPL - once bitten I don't think you can ever really give it up . Still got all the gear, checklists and my headset upstairs in a cupboard ready for me to start again!

KMS keys are 3 days as in theory your supposed to have a KMS server setup ready to be activated against. From what I understand of the KMS minimums if you have any Windows Server 2008 R2 boxes then the minimum count drops to 5 for 2k8R2 + W7 combined, whereas if you're only running W7 then you've got a minimum of 25.

Enterprise is the VL version. It's the same as ultimate but volume license only

I almosted resorted to using elance.com to get us a cheap designer/graphic artist to redraw it for us. You can fudge jumbo frames if you make the PIF unmanaged and set it up manually. There's also a way of changing the MTU using one of the xen server commands for managed PIFs, but from what I've read it tends to break Xenserver I only know this cause I've just spent the last two days setting up a 3-way bond for our storage network, which is now working brilliantly

Just got a 10kva w/10mins uptime UPS (Rotation+ 6kVA - 10kVA Parallel | Borri) from Borri UK. Total cost was about £2,400 but do bare in mind that it needs a dedicated hardwired 50A input feed, and has to have a hardwired output (so you'll need a PDU as well!).
