I'm pretty sure the baseband on my Windows Mobile crashes every now and then, and after talking to a few other people with Windows Mobile seems I'm not the only one. Very annoying to find that the phones been telling you it's get full signal, yet when you reboot it you've got 10 answer phone messages and a large number of missed calls. I'll bare this in mind. Currently liking the look of the Samsung i7500 Android based phone - which may be an O2 exclusive, so I might be opting for them at the end of the summer

Having used windows mobile for a few generations now I love the idea of a smartphone/pocketpc but I'm getting fed up of the constant crashing and problems with Windows Mobile. My Orange contract is up for renewal soon and I'm really hoping they get a decent android based phone in. Don't want to jump networks if I can help it (long time customer with high spend means I get some pretty good deals), but given their current line up I might be forced to

I used to play a long long time ago. Was one of the very early alpha/beta testers (one of the perks for running one of the most popular fansites at the time!), but at release it wasn't quite the game that a lot of us were hoping for . It seems to have come on leaps and bounds since then, and I keep getting tempted to try it again but I'm not sure I have the time anymore

You can license each component on there own, or opt for the desktop pack (which includes the cals, office and windows). Both are valid options as far as I'm aware

With schools agreement it seems that you license per computer. If you want to license Office under it then all computers have to be licensed for Office, if your licensing Windows all computer have to be licensed to run it etc.

Well it appears that we are now getting air-con for the new server room. Had a lovely visit from the bursar and someone quoting for air con this morning and was told "we're getting air con for your new server room, what's your heat loading requirements"

What sort of price is Access-it?

Wasn't keen on the Hitachi units. Seemed that they were "sealed for life" with no hope of upgrading anything, so you'd be forced into a new unit to add extra disks etc. If you're going for a VMWare solution I'd do some research on how well it works with HP's SANs. I've read some stuff about people not getting on with HP SANs + VMWare. I did like the look of the Equalogic 6000 range, but then I found the Sun Open Storage systems that a few of us have now purchased. If your still looking have a word with Andy at the cutter project and see what he can work out for you based on a Sun solution. I saw earlier that the matching grant deadline has been extended as well

That's one of the reasons I discounted Virtual Iron quite early on. They were a very small outift that were trying to compete with Citrix XenServer and VMWare, and while the product (which was also based on Xen) seemed good I couldn't justify going with them. That and there pricing was more expensive then Citrix . Of course now they've been bought out by Oracle so they're probably a pretty safe bet for the time being, provided Oracle doesn't axe the products! I choose to go with Citrix for our Virtualisation requirements as while VMWare is great the cost was just too high compared to XenServer Enterprise. Given that Citrix seems to be in a fairly strong position with their thin client and app/desktop virtualisation systems I wasn't too bothered about them not being as big as VMWare in the server VM marketplace as I believe overall the company is here to stay for the foreseeable future. The VMWare community certainly seems to be bigger than the Citrix one, but the Citrix forums are still fairly good and I believe given time and now that they're starting to put out some products that really can keep up with VMWare we'll start to see some growth in who's using it and the associated third party support sites

I did look into membership of either the BCS or IET a while ago (I get exemption from the exams because of my degree, and a cheaper price for the next year!) but couldn't see the point of joining the BCS. I know some people that have joined either the BCS or the IET (and some that joined both!) and from talking to them it seemed that in general people preferred what the IET offered. Possibly an alternative to look at?

Just priced up a Lattitude 2100 on the Dell Premier Website. With 512mb ram included as default (we intend to add an extra stick, and we can get 2gb sticks for around the same price as the upgrade to 1gb ram), win xp home, touch screen, camera, wifi n, 6 cell battery and the 3yr warranty it's coming in at the same sort of price we can get the Samsung NC10. Great news for us as we're looking at buying 20 in the next few weeks . Ubuntu 8.10 is an option as well if you don't intend on upgrading to XP Pro, and saves you even more cash

I've always discounted Viglen as a supplier, but if you're all singing their praises I may have to get some quotes on our next round of purchases to see how they compare . Can't seem to get onto the viglen website at the moment however. Is it down for anyone else or just me?

I installed it on Ubuntu 8.10 over the Easter holidays and used it to image a delivery of 70 machines. Made it incredibly painless . We've been using it since then to easily push out images to other PCs around the school. Haven't played with the AD integration (haven't had the time ) - does anyone have a guide to getting the AD stuff to work?

I've just received a demo Konica Minolta 5650EN which was dropped off by a Konica Minolta rep. He had a handy program that ran from a usb stick that scanned the network for all network printers and grabbed their total print count and consumable status. He mentioned that the basic version he was running was about £300, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called. I suspect it was just a pretty and easy to use interface for grabbing the SNMP data that could also produce reports for you. If you want to know what it was called I can drop him an email and ask for some more details?
