Not seen anyone running the Extreme network line of switches. What sort of pricing did you get (if you don't mind me asking!). Always imagined they'd be at the high end!

Just bought eclipse.net here to install over the summer. Looks quite nice (certainly compared to the Alice system we're currently running!), but I haven't seen the competition so can't really comment The librarian did mention that the one school in the local area running Oliver is looking at moving to Eclipse.net.

Dell for PCs, HP for networking equipment, FOG for my fave piece of software and Sun equipment for servers and storage solutions!

Having a look into Zmanda seems that sun are recomending it for a few other things (one of them being MySQL loads running on a S7000!), so it seems to be one of the backup solutions they're at least looking at and mindful of. Just shot an email across to them for some pricing info. Really like the look of Zmanda, and it seems that overall it could be much much lower cost for us then a BE or similar based solution. Need to dig and see if it supports NDMP though

The general availabilty date of 2k8 R2 is the same as W7 (22nd October this year), and according to the windows server team blog they're in sync with W7 as it's a dual development, and are committed to a RTM of the same date as W7. Hopefully since 2008 R2 and W7 are dual releases we'll get access to 2k8 R2 at the same time - which would be perfect for us since we're moving to a new domain and upgrading to 2k8 at the same time, or if it's out 2k8 r2!

Common misconception. Because of the Safe Harbor - Export.gov - Safe Harbor (note US spelling ) agreement between the US and the EU, if a company agrees to be bound by the safe harbor guidelines then they are safe to transport data outside of the EU while still fully complying with EU DPA laws and regulations. Because all the big companies (Amazon, Google, MS etc) are all signatories you can use their cloud services without worrying about DPA concerns. Wish I could get the school to pay for my travel expenses to go to this

Ok, seems that I'm going to have to order 20 Netbooks before the end of term (around a weeks time ) so I need to get some quotes together quite quickly. Could I get a quote for 20 of the following spec of Dell Latitude 2100 Netbooks: Atom N270, 10in touch screen w/camera, 80gb HDD, 512mb RAM (although if you could give me the price difference for the 1gb RAM that would be great!), 6-Cell battery, Intel 5100 WiFI A/B/G/N card, XP Home, 3yr NBD Warranty. Separately could I also get a few different options for a laptop trolley big enough to hold the above? I'm not sure how much we're willing to spend on the trolley yet so options would be appreciated Thanks, John

Quick question - is anyone using this scheme and/or Ricoh printers? If so how are you finding it? We're going to move to some form of managed print system this summer and implement print quotas at the same time (just got given the go ahead!) and I'm trying to work out the best solution for us John

Before I started they used to just keep creating free accounts here, but were fed up with the restrictions. One of the first jobs I was given was to sort out a proper SurveyMonkey subscription. Sooo I signed up, got the invoice generated and then handed it to the finance office and said "we need to pay this" Took them a few weeks to sort out that USD payment!

Your 8 cores are likely 2 CPUs. With Datacenter you're licensing the number of sockets not the number of cores .

I've just installed XenServer 5.5 on our Sun X4150's. Didn't have any problems with the install, although I used the iLOM remote KVM console with redirected dvd drive to mount the iso image. No need to mess around with burning CDs or actually going to the server room If you do use the iLOM make sure to upgrade the service processor to the latest version (v3 support tools dvd download is on the Sun website for the X4150s) as I'm not sure if the ability to mount images was in previous iLOM versions.

Currently working on a similar plan for us. Here's hoping I eventually get my plans approved!

I do like the Navigon software, but at the moment I'm waiting on the TomTom software + mount to be released. The tomtom mount looks like one of the best iPhone car mounts around

Being a computer science degree there wasn't a great deal of "technical" reference books involved - mainly a large amount of theory that largely stays the same. The journals and research papers however were very upto date, being the forefronts of their respective fields. The library does need to evolve however. Most university libraries also now manage the SSO for the various journal and technical websites that you need access to either through Athens or some other system. Without both the online access to resources and the library its self I'd have been lost It was always good to do a initial spate of research online, and then track down some much more indepth resources in the library.

Interestingly while studying Computer Science at uni we were always taught that the library was one of our core resources for books, technical papers and access to journals. Surprisingly just because we had a subscription to a journal didn't mean we could access it online. In my last year or two, and particularly in my masters year the library was indispensible. If I hadn't been taught how to use a library while at secondary I doubt I would have been able to effectively use the library in later life. I have to say that it's very sad to see some schools axing their libraries in new builds, and I'm very glad that the library here is a core part of the school. It's very integrated into teaching and learning in a variety of subjects and having been refurbished in the last few years is also a great place to be.
