Running Citrix XenServer 5.5 here with Smoothwall installed for several months. Not using it in production yet (still testing!), but it's been working fine for us in the non-paravirtualised mode

I really do need to get it don't I? Just playing through Dragon Age: Origins at the moment, so haven't had much time to play anything else

O2 LLU based (they have their equipment installed at the exchange) services are good. Unfortunately their home access product is heavily oversubscribed since it costs them a lot more to run. I'd avoid the home access product for now

I did several security courses while at university. Courses with the title "Crypto Attacks and Counter measures" or "Topics in Privacy and Security" tended to attract a fair number of people. I learnt a great deal about both conventional and unconventional attacks from courses like that. Teaching people how a system can be broken is one of the best ways of figuring out how to fix them and secure them in the future.

Flightcontrol (about 59p) is one of the most addictive games around - great fun Aroundme is great for finding things based on your current GPS location

Have a look at Bacula (Bacula, the Open Source, Enterprise ready, Network Backup Tool for Linux, Unix, and Windows). Supposed to work quite well, but haven't got around to trying it myself . Amanda/Zmanda is another open source possibility that I believe will work with 2k8 64-bit (AMANDA, The Advanced Maryland Automatic Network Disk Archiver). Both have paid support/enterprise versions should you ever wish to "upgrade" as well

I'd be interested to hear how well VMs handle a fallover in a cluster to a different head unit as well. Looking at the 7310/7410 with clustering in the next 12-24 months and being able to survive a head unit dying is one of the questions I had

That would be very handy. Going to be moving our SIMS server to our lovely virtualised server farm sometime soonish. It's currently the only non-virtualised server we're running

Having nothing but problems with our OneLAN box. It's been sent to be repaired 3-4 times in the last 9 months

One that I seem to do time and time again getting a remote windows PC to release/renew it's DHCP lease. Open up the command prompt type ipconfig /release, hit enter and then realise what I've done Always forget to use ipconfig /release && ipconfig /renew!

I suspected that clustering could only happen over very short distances but apaton's confirmed it for me now . I supose you could always get away with "only" 3 7410/7310 heads...or 2 7410 heads/1 7310. Have the main selection clustered and with enough JBOD's to give you no single point of failure, replication to a 7410/7310 in the backup server room. Still talking lots of £££ though

Personally I use backblaze.com. Pay a small monthly fee and it works pretty well, although it did take a fair few months of 24/7 uploads to get the data onto their servers.

Haven't been able to get AD sync working here - although that's likely due to our domain being 2008 R2 and our current 7110 OS version not liking 2008 R2. Haven't had the chance to upgrade to v3 (which I'm told should work), especially since it has a totally different iSCSI stack and I'm going to need some time to fully test. The phone home I know is working fine. The number of faults our 7110 has logged with Sun is funny. Most of them are the power failing to one of the PSUs (new server room with dodgy power!).

Hi! If you need/want any more info on XenServer or the Sun 7110 let me know. I know both myself and _Ric have setups based around the two, and quite possibly a few others as well John

Technically we're using OpenSolaris with ZFS (we have a Sun 7110 storage system ). I am looking at using OpenSolaris and ZFS for a cheap backup server that I'd like to build however. Any tips/pitfalls anyone comes across would be great

Took delivery of our first 16 Netbooks yesterday . Opted for the Dell Latitute 2100's and I'm just looking at laptop trolley options for them. This is going to be our first deployment of laptops for student use, and since we don't have a managed wifi system (only a access point that will sit with the trolley) we're still looking at configuration options. Going to be testing out some of those options between now and Christmas with Science getting their hands of them end of this term/start of next year. If it's successful we'll likely be rolling out a managed wireless system and seeing a big increase in the number of netbooks

As with Vista if you don't want to use a MAK key, and you have 25 or more PCs that will be running Windows 7 then you can use a KMS key (key management server) instead. You have to set up a Key Management Server and all Windows 7 PCs will contact this key management every 180 (I think that's correct) days to keep themselves activated.
