XenServer is also unable to overcommit memory at the moment. The next release (previews are in March I believe) has it, but until then I think VMWare are the only "enterprise" solutions that have memory overcommit.

Our 4 x4150's are 2 x Intel E5450 3.0Ghz quad-core Xeons with 32gb Ram. No problems with CPU usage and RAM usage runs at about 50-60% on all servers with the majority of our services virtualised.

It's likely that the switch can't provide full PoE power to all ports unless you use another power supply/power shelf. If you're only powering something like a VoIP phone you'll probably find you need less than the max that 802.3af provides

I've had this problem more than once with HP and D-Link gear talking to each other. Unless the fibre port is set at 1000mbps it wouldn't always connect.

The office seems to get in a mess every few months until I get annoyed during a holiday period and clear it all out . Unfortunately we don't have a store room, or work room so everything gets dumped in the office . Server room is a mess of cables at the moment due to some problems when we moved into it in September. A server room with power that trips out every 5 minutes = no fun. Planning to tidy it up a little next week, and have a good go at tidying it at Easter.

Wouldn't surprise me if MS licensing has different information or a different interpretation to the MS document I linked to earlier. MS licensing is so complicated that every time you speak to a "licensing expert" you get a different answer

I think I missed it to. It seems to be a defence of the Christian faith, which is different to intelligent design. I'm Catholic and to me intelligent design just doesn't work. Then again I was always brought up to believe that the bible wasn't literal, but allegories and other stories to convey a message and that by taking it at face value you lost a lot of it's meaning

I believe you normally just need to run the latest update - it includes all previous upgrades. I think the only exception was if you were running <2.5 prior to updating to 3.0 or later when you had to update to a 2.5 or later release first. Planning on running this update myself next week

Certainly agree with this . The amount given per pupil is a much easier number to compare, but of course entirely depends on what your budget has to pay for. For instance we're just going through the process of doing the first proper budget/5-year plan that's ever been done for IT and I've been told that things like SIMS, the internet connection and all printing won't be paid for from my budget but elsewhere. However projectors, new printers and virtually every other IT spend does come out of my budget (and doesn't get recharged to departments).

That's our exact setup here . It's a bit of a shame that Sun don't have better support for Citrix but ohh well . I did find one interesting problem with XenServer NFS connecting through to our 7110. Without a DNS server setup on the storage network the 7110 seemed to hang and then not respond to the NFS connection query. Found the DNS solution on the OpenSolaris or Sun storage forums (can't remember which now!), so setup a Linux VM running Bind using the HD storage on one of our servers. Stuck in the DNS and reverse DNS info for the servers and 7110 and it worked first time

I vote for dedupe We're running compression on our 7110 and currently achieve a compression ratio of roughly 1.3x. We've got a mix of both LZJB and GZIP-2 depending on the share and the 7110 barley breaks a sweat The data is a mix of VMs/Home Directories/General storage. I imagine the dedupe will give big benefits on things like shared storage and home directories where we've got people storing the same file across multiple locations.

Excellent report. Really helpful to see the various options and how they stood up to your testing. I've had Xirrus out to do a site survey in the past, and still need to contact Aggy to do a site survey with Ruckus kit. Unfortunately site wide wireless is on the back burner due to a lack of budget, but I'm hoping that with a good site survey we may be able to roll it out incrementally over the next few years in connection with a number of network upgrades that need to take place

We've got a fair amount of support from the SMT, and all departments have been told that all resources have to be made available on the VLE. We've also got a lot of interest in quizzes for homework/in class and the fact that once created you can reuse questions for revision tests later on. The recent addition of being able to view your home directory from within Moodle (through the SMB block) has also driven a lot of people to Moodle. Proving very popular amongst both staff and students so hopefully it'll also drive them to use the other parts
