We've stopped using Toshiba products entirely because of their poor service. Too many laptops that have developed faults that they've refused to fix, or fixed and then when the problem reoccurs refuse to deal with it again.

One of those jobs I keep meaning to do but never get the time to do . We've been running it since September and we're just gathering usage data atm. I've got the go ahead to roll out print quotas to students and recharge staff printing back to departments but I wanted to ensure the levels we set were semi-reasonable

I've just looked at our Papercut logs. We've got about 1050 on roll with about 100 staff and in the last 30 days we've printed about 41,000 pages to the 30 network printers. There's a load of non-networked printers as well (particularly in offices) so it's likely to be more like 50k pages

Now using OCS as the PBX isn't something I'd considered. Time to go do some reading

I use Ultramon at home and it's a great tool. Used multimon here at work for a while, but got fed up of it crashing on me

We used DNA recycling in the summer to get rid of about 100 old computers, old tvs, dead OHP's, lots of old and dead monitors and a load of old laser printers. Great service. Got a collection booked for just before Christmas (can't move in the office for old equipment at the moment!), but unfortunately there's now a £25 admin fee

I'd love to get some information on this as well. We're moving to encrypt staff laptops ASAP, but need to look at USB drive encryption and enforcement. Knowing what penalties there are for not complying with any requirements would really help in convincing SMT that they need to get behind this!

Personally we use the Dell Latitude E5500 with a better spec than that Acer (T7250 and 4gb Ram with 3 yr NBD onsite) and it's quite a bit less than the price for the Acer. Always found that Dells Education pricing and their website pricing are miles apart. Try and get a Dell Premier account setup - that way you can spec things up via the premier website which has much more realistic pricing

Currently we've got a Sun 7110 serving as the VM image store and our user data store. The 7110 connects through to a Windows VM that then serves files out to the rest of the network. It's got multiple network connections - some are on a separate network that only the VM servers and it sit on. The rest of it's network interfaces sit on the standard network. We will be moving to using CIFS directly on the 7110, removing a unnecessary layer of abstraction at some point in the next few months. Unfortunately when we started to use it for everything we couldn't get it to join AD, but in the latest releases this isn't a problem

Not at the moment. Our existing phone system is ancient and we've maxed out the number of extensions it can run. Currently looking at possible alternatives, although I haven't been told what our budget is yet

Complicated? May look at using this to provide some basic form of remote access to staff and students.

I wouldn't mind letting them use personal email, but the problem we found was that if they had access to personal email they'd be using that rather than their school email account. We were lucky that none of SMT seem to use personal email accounts within school so they were behind the idea.

Our SMT actually had us block personal email account providers within the school for all staff and students. Too many staff using their personal email accounts for school business, and sending infomation that shouldn't ever leave the school. There was a bit of resistance at first but now they all seem to love using the internal email system!

To remove conficker I've also used the Spohos removal tool and the Kaspersky removal tool. Both seem to work well

Best way I've found is to use NMap. Download the latest version and run nmap -PN -T4 -p139,445 -n -v --script=smb-check-vulns --script-args safe=1 [targetnetworks]

Well if the stats in that article were correct then I'd guess at around 1.5PB for two with 2TB hard drives - should cover our storage needs for a while Alternatively I'd be quite happy to "settle" for a donation of a 7410 or two together with JBODs

Ohh they look nice and shinnnny . If Sun wants to donate me an Anago or two for testing purposes I'd be more than happy to help out . Not sure what I'd do with all that storage space but I'm sure we could think of something!
