Yeah totally agree with the last bit, I have an old Q6600 which I've had since it came out (gutted it dropped so low 3 months after I bought it!!) I bought it for games and just general working, I can run anything with anything else and it doesn't make a difference I can still run things at normal speed. Plus rendering in blender is so much quicker than my celeron 1.6 at work!!!

A lot of games are utilizing multi core processing now, as the programming libraries are easier to use now. I'm reading a book on advanced 2D game programming and it has chapters about the threading system in linux and its libraries. Quite interesting but sure has got my head spinning!!

Is there any reason you are not going for Vista x64, I run it on my machine at home and its fantastic compared to XP which I have dualbooted.

I7 + XP = a lot of wasted multitasking performance. Compared XP doesn't use the cores efficiently, but im sure it will still be blazing!! I didn't think you had to use Tri channel ram with them, i beleive you can put in as much or as little as you like, the performance differences will be minimal for most work, only games and 3d apps would show a noticable difference i would think.

The install packages through synaptic are the easiest by far to use. Its the same for all linux distros, Ubuntu is known as the "easy" one to use, I would def have another go with it. The "like windows" reference is more than likely going to be referenceing KDE which is supposed to be the Windows equivalent. In my opinion its nothing like windows and is a blocky user interface compared to the much more polished Gnome. Either way the *buntu's are the way I would look for if its ease of use you are looking for.

ah that was for ubuntu i meant. Ive not used Freespire before as I've stuck with Ubuntu really. What specific features do you want from the OS?

if you're looking to update you need to add the proxy in APT. You can do that through a GUI in synaptic package manager, or there is a command line alternative for making the sudo apt-get update commands working. Is that what you need?

Ubuntu is by far the simplest to use and set up. I use Gnome as I really can't stand KDE. What distros have you tried?

Why Xandros? I didn't think Xandros was available like other linux distros, its based on a debian fork so another version like Ubuntu or Kubuntu if you want to stick with KDE could be what you're looking for?

We have a CC3 network here too, did you get premier elements from them? I have heard of some Adobe products being slightly annoying to install, is this true? I can only see the bundle with photoshop elements at this moment on the RM site, but I've only just started looking!!

sorry about that post, i posted it after all the comments of what it opens!! What machines are you all running these programs on? Ours are severely lacking in power, 2.6ghz celerons w 1gb ram. I know its not much but they are the newest ones we have at the moment!

Ah thats cool, does it import most video formats? We are just looking really to increase the number of formats we support here, at the moment we are converting files for students because we only really have mpg and wmv support (the basic with XP).

Yeah its the perspex piece, we have a couple where some kids have rammed the buttons into the case too. Fix so far is to glue a piece or plastic over the hole!! These things are great till the repair costs come into it!!! I think I shall have a go with the perspex cover, sounds pretty simple, and if all goes wrong can always get a whole new screen as RM want to do anyway

Do any of you use any video editing software in schools? I am wondering because we are lacking the mp4 codecs to use the flipcams and a couple of teachers are looking to use them in lessons soon. We currently use XP Movie Maker which is just horrendous loading a movie bigger than 10mb makes the computers crawl!! I am only aware of the Pinnacle software as its all ive used at home, does anyone have any recomendations on software? (Or no software as the case may be I have mentioned the ffdShow codecs here before and I dont think anyone is keen on the "grey area" that surrounds the legalities of using them )

We have an RMOne with a broken screen, it is not the lcd panel that is broken, just the plastic cover over the lcd. I was just wondering if anyone has ever tried to repair one of these themselves as RM will only replace the whole screen which will cost nearly half the machine cost again to repair, way over the top for a functioning unit.

There should be an autorecovery file if the PC hasn't been used since. appdata/micro$oft/Word i thinks. If the .doc has been written over you still might be able to recover some text using Photorec or something

Never really hada problem with OWA light, which is what it will default to when its not on IE. Still its pretty limited compared to the full OWA but its functional to get some emails at least. Ive always used firefox at home to recieve them, and as soon as I have the internet back I will return to using it

Bet its a lot quieter than my RAID 0 raptors!! Couldn't afford more than one F1 at the time, but wish I had more now as I have tons of smaller drives instead at the moment!

If it is Vista I believe it locks you out fully, I have come across a few Vista laptops back when it was first released that ended up unvalidating themselves, ie performed an update on a healthy system and it rebooted to say please validate your copy and wouldn't let you in with out validating. Saying that this was PC world so I am unsure of how the laptops were treated by the users :s Microsoft had a few fixes which included chkdsk and a few other things but none of them worked.

Another vote for the samsung 1TB f1s, fast and huge! Think ebuyer have a good deal on them at the mo as well
