It looks like just what I need. I should have looked a bit harder. I've been reading Technet and other sources on this for the best part of 3 days!

WDS Server: 2008 R2 Clients: Win 7 Professional I'm new to WDS. I've got a working WDS server with a win 7 Pro image. I've added drivers and can deploy it to a client. I'm struggling to use SIM to create a useable unattended answer file. I've selected the image.wim copied from the DVD. Two main issues:- 1) What settings do I need to configure for a standard Win 7 installation? I think I need:- Locale: en-GB, keyboard, language, timezone; wipe the disk and install on disk 0, partition 1. Accept the EULA. Organisation name. MAK license key. Things like that. 2) What do I do with the unattend.xml file when it's complete? Does it go in the server properties client tab, or the install image properties general tab? I've read the Technet Library, but really need an idiot's guide now. I'm stuck.

Thanks. That's a condensed version of the EES Licensing Guide. But much clearer. I'd recommend that everyone reads it. I'm still not clear on the difference between Work At Home (WAH) and Home Use Program (HUP) rights, though. Except that HUP is apps only and WAH is OS and apps.

Is it taking them that long to work it out?

I've just finished reading the EES Licensing Guide that Robbocop linked to. It mentions in several places a 300 unit minimum purchase. From reading that doc, the basic Win7 + Office + CALs desktop counts as 3 units per FTE staff. Other apps are 1 unit each (I think). So, if you've got less than 100 staff (like we have) then you'd have to buy extra products to make up the units to 300. See the Volume Licensing Product List. Then I spoke to a supplier who told me that the 300 point minimum no longer applies. Anyone else knows anything about this 300 point minimum?

Just to update. Since applying the patch I've had no reported incidents on that machine. I have had the problem on another Win7 machine that I didnt patch. Anyway SP1 should be on WSUS soon - probably March's patch Tuesday.

I've just been back to the KB. The "v2" patch files are now on the KB2434932 article for download (datestamped 02/02/11). The download page also indicates that they're in SP1. Windows6.1-KB2434932-v2-x86.msu Windows6.1-KB2434932-v2-x64.msu I've installed the patch and will ask the user to monitor for reoccurrance. Thanks again.

That's brilliant. If the v2 file is not on the KB article (I tried that hotfix weeks ago), how do we get it? I have only one machine running Win 7 that the user uses. I'm willing to try it.

I'm having the same problem. The user saves a Word 2003 document in Windows 7. It appears to them to save correctly with the .doc file in the share. They then go to an XP machine and see only a .tmp file instead of the .doc. The .doc file has been cached locally on the Win 7 machine, while the share contains just the .tmp file. The user can manually sync the file by accessing the offline files tab in the documents properties and pressing sync. (This still leaves the .tmp in the share, though). Several users need the share offline, so I can't disable offline files. I have set the share as an administratively managed offline files folder in GP. Maybe this is relevant - it is a share used by several users. This is the only share with this behaviour - the user's redirected home folder does not have this problem. The share is on Server 2003. Does anyone have this problem if the share is on Server 2008 R2?

I've just discovered it's a DNS issue. The DNS A record for the machine is two months old. Now I need to find out why. If I use the correct IP address, the ping and shares work OK.

I have a share on my Win 7 machine. I've just tried accesing it from an XP machine and it can't find it. XP can't ping the Win7 machine either. This has started recently. It was all working a few weeks ago. The share is for making msi packages with WinInstall. I've been using it all year no problems, today I've tried to use it to make an image and XP machines can't see the Win7 share or ping the Win7 machine. I think some windows update may have broken it. Previously the firewall was switched off in the domain profile. I've switched it back on and set an exception rule to allow ping - still no joy. Any ideas? Thanks.

I'd avoid Sweex. We recently had a batch of Sweex PS/2 mouses. They have a strange way of suddenly swapping x and y. Fixed by unplugging and repluging in the PS/2 connector.

Quick question: The new MS EES is costed per FTE staff, not computers. Does this mean that we can have any number of virtual machines with Win 7 + Office 2010 at virtually no cost? I hope I'm right.

Answering my own post again... Fixed it. It was a single Group Policy setting. User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Start Menu and Taskbar/Remove user's folders from the Start Menu This was enabled. I changed it to not configured and the start menus are now merged from the local machine and the user's roaming profile. The behaviour of this setting has changed from XP to Win7. I don't know if this is a bug, or design, but the behaviour is not as described in the setting's description. This has taken me about 6 hours of methodical troubleshooting.

Hello, The start menu in the user's roaming profile is not getting merged with the start menu in the local all users profile. This only affects Win 7 / Server 2008 R2. XP is OK. To elaborate:- When a user logs onto a Windows 7 machine or Server 2008 R2 machine, there are group policy preferences to create shortcuts in their start menu\programs folder. It works in XP, and in Windows 7/2008 the shortcuts do get created in the users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder, but the user cannot see the shortcuts when they click the start/all programs button. The user just sees the local start menu - their profile start menu isn't merged with it. I've spent hours on this and cannot understand why this is happening. The Start Menu and App Data folders are not redirected. It works perfectly for the desktop - I can create shortcuts for the desktop and the users sees a combination of the machine's desktop shortcuts and theirs. Any ideas why the start menus don't merge? Thanks.

Our Admin Manager and I have just returned from the first Progresso presentation and were very impressed. We plan to move over to Progresso as early as possible in 2012. That's all I'm going to say at this stage. You'll have to get the rest from Serco.

The best the NM could do is to run the report and send it off. They couldn't be responsible for the accuracy of the data. If there's no Data Manager, then who is responsible for entering the data and ensuring accuracy? That person should be doing the census, with the NM's support of course.

Can anyone tell me in simple terms what the new Serco MIS, Progresso, is? Is it a replacement for Facility or is it to be optional alongside Facility? Thanks.
