Hello, I'm considering trying out Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 (the standalone hypervisor). Two questions:- 1) how do you manage it remotely? I've got RSAT on my W7 desktop with the Hyper-V Manager. Is that enough? 2) does it support software RAID-1, like the full Server 2008 does, and how do you configure it? The hardware I'm using doesn't have RAID. I've previously used VMware Server running under Windows Server. I'm trying to move to Hyper-V. Thanks.

John, Believe me... I know about the Facility backups - I just can't convince the admin staff. They came to me yesterday morning after mucking up the timetable completely - with no Facility backup. About an hour of hair ripping later, I'd restored the SQL database and another member of admin staff was manually re-entering the morning's attendance. I didn't know that a SQL restore could cause problems. I've done it before in a couple of emergencies but not had any problems. I'll have to invest more time in user education.

Fixed it. In BackupExec restore job, check the "Take existing database offline" and "Overwrite existing database" boxes. That way it doesn't do the staging on drive C:. (I know this is a Server 2003 forum, but couldn't find anywhere better to put this).

Hello, I'm trying to restore our Serco CMIS database to our SQL server 2005 (on Server 2003) after admin staff made some big mistake. Using Symantec Backup Exec 11d The SQL databases are on drive E: with 80GB free space - plenty. The restore fails because there isn't enough space on drive C:. It looks like it's using drive C: as a staging area. Is there any way to tell it to use another drive as a staging area? Other drives have loads of free space. I'm desparate!

Fixed it. The test account I was using had a corrupt profile - the rest were fine. Panic over. Here's the solution if anyone wants it. It's not necessary to reboot the server.

Hello, I have Server 2008 R2 running as a terminal server. I have group policy setting a path to the share for TS roaming profiles. I also have group policy to add the administrators group to the roaming profiles (so I can see what's in them) and also the ignore the profiles ownership. The problem is that when a user logs on they get a brief pop up saying that they have been logged on with a temporary profile. The event log shows event ID 1511 "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off." An empty folder is created in the share where the TS roaming profile should be. All my users have roaming profiles (works perfectly in XP/Vista/7). Why is the TS saying it can't find a local profile? Why is it looking for a local and not roaming profile? Why isn't it creating a new roaming profile? Any ideas? Thanks.

Thanks everyone. I've never heard of OpenDNS. That's a good one to start with, but I'm guessing it just blocks certain domains or IPs. I'll also start with K9, and also look into the Norton product. I'll also get the The Windows Live Family Safety.

Thanks. I'll try K9. I'm not sure about the Microsoft Familiy Security, though. It doesn't include web filtering, unless I've missed something.

Can anyone recommend a decent web filter for home use? i.e will just just on the local machine, and be controlled by the parent. My children are Moshi Monsters addicts and are only a few clicks away from seeing something they shouldn't. Thanks.

Update: I've just remembered I bought the RapidSSL certs through trustico. They're much cheaper that way at £14.70 per year, with discounts for longer term. Fast efficient service too.

I'm now having the same problem with Solidworks 2010. I've installed the license administrator on a server, created an administrative installation set to point to the license server. Installed from the administative image on a few machines and tested it OK. I originally had a problem where the license server name had to be in the format [email protected], not just 27534@server. I've just spent a whole day installing throughout the rest of the school, and come in this morning and none of them can obtain a license - not even the ones that could before. EDIT: I've just found that reinstalling Solidworks on the clients fixes the problem. I haven't changed the administrative install image, though, so I'm not convinced it won't happen again.

I haven't used them myself but I have been recommending them to staff and parents for years. I've don't know how many of those people have used it but I've never had a complaint. When Office 2010 is out, I'm going to buy that through The Basement. If you register with RM, they'll give you the code for a link from your school website so they can track traffic and credit you with the 5%.

When is Becta closing exactly? I've seen dates of 12 months from now, November 2010, and 1-June-2010 (next week). According to Idealo, the Home Access programme is continuing for a little longer, but doesn't say for how long.

Can anyone tell me in plain English how the Home Access scheme works, particularly, how schools and parents sign up for it? I've been meaning to do something about this for months. The news of Becta's soon demise has spurred me to do something before they're gone. Typically of Becta, their website has pages of text telling us how wonderful the scheme is, without any useful information like how to get started. Thanks.

We also do that - restrict colour to staff only and give them the ability to print the pupils documents. We have two MFPs provided by Arena (as well as our laser printers) and are very pleased with the service and cost. I now believe that printers themselves are virtually free and that the makers make their money on the consumables alone. For example, we have several HP CP1515n printers. They cost £150, but come with £200 worth of toner. It's not the low-volume cartridges that are often included with new printers, either. Work that out. It's cheaper to buy a new printer than a set of toner. One department here has just chucked out a new CP1515n when they discovered the printing costs.

They were recommended to me by Promethean. I called Promothean to ask about the blotches and they told me they used T P Matrix. (PS can you thank my post please - I need the rep! Ta.)

I've just used T P Matrix for the first time to service two projectors. Excellent service and reasonable prices. They understand schools, suggested doing the work over Easter, and returned the units promptly on the first day of term. The two projectors (Sanyo and Panasonic) came back as good as new. The purple blotches and darkness in the image were gone. They are Sanyo approved, but they'll do most makes. Would definitely recommend and use again.

I've recently tried these passive splitter cables and had no problems with image quality - not noticeably any different from the active Lindy splitters. At £8.50 they're worth a try. Lindy VGA Splitter Cable (2 Way)

I could watch that all day. Bad discovery for a quiet afternoon alone in the holidays. There's some strange ones though. I'm just watching United Airlines flight UA931 from San Fransisco to Los Angeles fly over Lancashire. There's something similar for shipping here.

I think the devices have been configured by the vendor (wildknowledge.co.uk) to work on a GPRS network. I'll ask them tomorrow. Everytime I try to access a web page it say the connection was lost. I go and look at the connection settings and the proxy address has been deleted. I've re-entered the proxy many times, but it keeps dissappearing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

SYNACK and TYO: Thanks. That at least assures me that it is possible. It's a step in the right direction. I'll be back at that school tomorrow evening. I'll have another go then.
