I've tried ctrl+f5, but it didn't fix it. I've also tried different browsers (IE / Chrome / Firefox) but it makes no difference. I'm using v4.0.0.1 tabbed trebuchet MS at home (the only place EG works for me). Does the theme roam with the account, or does it just stay with the machine you're using? I'll look when I get back to the school.

The weird thing is that the front page works OK. Smoothwall realtime log attached.

Thanks ZH, but I don't think it's specifically Smoothwall causing the problem. One of the sites with the problem just has the LA's firewall & proxy, and no Smoothwall. Smoothwall in the school has a policy set to allow everything for my account. The realtime logs confirm that nothing from edugeek (or any other domain) is getting blocked for me. Is it just me? Has anyone else had this? When it appeared a few months ago, I thought it would just clear up eventually, but it never did.

I have real problems accessing EduGeek through any kind of proxy. Whenever I do, I get bits of content missing (mainly images). Worse, the forums page appears without any forums listed - so I can't start any new threads. It's been like this for months now, hence me not posting much recently. The only place I can get EduGeek properly is at home through domestic BT broadband. I've tried several places:- * My main school (North Yorks proxy + Smoothwall) * Another school (North Yorks Proxy only) * Local charity I work for (Smoothwall only) It's the same through them all. I've tried different browsers and refreshing them - makes no difference. I'm posting this from home, just so I can start the thread. If there's no suggestions by tomorrow, I'll add some screen shots from the school.

I've just got off the phone from them - for the last time. The last two orders they promised next day delivery, only for it to take several weeks. This time was the worst. Phoned chasing delivery after two weeks. Got though to someone who just slagged off the sister company ijt.biz and told me to deal with him in future. I asked about the delivery and he said he couldn't help. Fantastic. Tried another phone number, got through to someone who had no record of my order. They put me through to someone who did have the order. He apologised for the non-delivery and said they'll send me bigger flash drives at same price today. It's a nice gesture, but it's not enough to make me go back. Never again, no matter how cheap.

I don't know. The supplier did them before I worked there. I think they were syspreped before deployment. I tried newsid on a few (and all of the above suggestions) but it wouldn't get them going. I'd given up on WSUS for these machines and I just decided to manually update them from the MS update site as a last resort. I was surprised when they immediately registered themselves with the WSUS server and began downloading.

I've just found another neat trick when all the above failed. Open IE and go to update.microsoft.com on each affected client and let it install the latest Windows Update client. You don't need to actually install any other updates. Run wuaulclt /detectnow (or leave it to do it itself) and the machine will register with the WSUS server and download and install updates like it should. I found this this week with a room full of newly ghosted machines (all XP SP3) in one of the schools I look after. None of them were registering with WSUS or downloading updates. The WSUS client diagnostic tool showed no problems on the clients, though. This probably won't work in every case; but it worked here, and is worth a try.

I've done some more experimenting. It doesn't work for admins, if they try to open a http: link, or type a http: address into the Vista search bar. IE8 only runs if they click on the IE icon on the start menu or quick launch bar. Unfortunately, I've hidden these for users, so they can't run IE. I could just allow them to see the IE icon again, but that won't get the shortcuts working.

Hello, I've recently deployed IE8 to all my machines through WSUS. Runs OK on XP. When non-admins try to open a web site from a link, they just get the Vista throbber cursor for a minute, then "Windows cannot find http://..." Works OK for admins. I've tried logging on as admin and resetting the program defaults for IE, but that doesn't work. I managed to fix it on one machine, but only by wiping it and reinstalling Vista + updates + IE8 from scratch. Deleting the user's profile doesn't work either. I've only got three Vista machines, but I can't wipe them. Any help please? I can't find anything on Google.

I've just come across the same problem with one machine here. I deleted the reg keys (ces973's post above) and ran wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow but just got DCOM 10005 errors in the system log. Then I found this. I ran the script below to stop the service (it wasn't running anyway) and re-register all the dll's. net stop wuauserv regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll regsvr32 /s wups.dll regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll regsvr32 /s jscript.dll regsvr32 /s atl.dll regsvr32 /s softpub.dll regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll net start wuauserv Then I ran wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow and it's all working! Two weeks of hair ripping over! I don't know if this'll help you, but I hope it does. I'm posting it here for reference anyway.

Sorry for hijacking this thread, but can anyone recommend suitable hardware for running OpenFiler on? That's without spending a fortune. I'll need it for images of virtual machines, running on VMWare ESXi on other hardware.

Does EsXpress backup EXSi 4? I've looked on the website but can't see that it does.

Did you get this working? Does anyone else have a good simple backup solution for VMWare ESXi 4? I'm setting up a server for virtualisation. I could just put Windows Server and VMWare Server on it, but at a greater performance cost.

John, I'd really want the Sun solution too, bit don't think I'll get the funding. Last week I had a demo of Sun technology by Bell Consulting at Sun's offices in Leeds. If I'd thought, I should have asked you to come too - sorry! Very impressive. They told me everything Ric told me plus more. Loved the smart cards idea. Whip it it - instant desktop as you left it. Whip it out - you're done. Plus enhancements to performance for audio & video over RDP. They said it bypasses the RDP (didn't understand how). I'm expecting a quote from them in two weeks. If it's high, it'll be hard to justify. The SMT are really coming on heavily on expenditure at the moment.

Thanks for replying, everyone. I know that with fat clients' printers had to be deployed with a script in a GPO, and since the addition of group policy preferences, could be deployed with GPOs. The trouble is that thin clients aren't organised by GPO, or by any other method that I know of. It looks like we have to revert to the old script method, which is a disappointing backward step, but at least it's possible. I'd seen Ric's script, but it's a few years old. I was hoping that with Server 2008 MS would have come up with a better method of organising thin clients and deploying things like printers to them. Anyway, at least it's possible. That's the main concern addressed.

I'm about to take the plunge into thin clients. I'd really prefer to go with Sun technology, but don't think the budget will allow. Our LA have proposed a purely MS TS solution, just using the tools built into Windows Server 2008. This is, of course, the cheapest option. Any general thoughts on going with just MS, and not using Citrix or Sun? Anything that would justify the higher cost for a cash-strapped small school? My main worry is assigning printers based on the clients ID (i.e. grouping them by room and assigning printers that way). I know the Sun Solaris solution can do this, but can Windows TS also do this? Or is there a feasible workaround? Thanks.

The teech is right, in computer jargon, the plural of mouse is mouses. I can't find a reference just now, though. Just like in engineering, the plural of antenna is antennas, but in biology it's antennae. Engineers are using English, but Biologists are using Latin.

We have an old connexions kiosk not being used. Any suggestions on what to do with it? It's large, heavy, has a keyboard, trackball, touch screen and contains a Dell PC (can't remember the model). I've been asked to chuck it, but that would be such a waste of the hardware. We were told at the time of the installation that they cost about £6,000 each. Connexions installed it years ago, but it seems to have become one of those forgotten government projects. We've made enquires through our Connexions rep, but she's drawn a blank. No one there knows anything about the kiosks. There's the obvious choices: games / internet machine, but that would just cause problems. The librarian doesn't want it it the library any more, so that rules out eclipse. Any ideas?
