Hello, I have purchased Expression Studio Web Professional 4.0 volume license and downloaded it from the Volume Licensing Service Center. In the VLSC it says "This product does not require a product key." I deployed it to the school's computers via GPO (just deployed the msi files) in August. After about 2 months, all the clients began requesting product keys for Expression Web. They give the option of a trail period, which is slowly running out (18 days left now). Expression Web was working happily without a product key for 2 months, now it say it needs one. Has an update caused this (SP2 went on recently)?. I've looked again at the VLSC to see if there's an updated Expression Web to use, but there isn't. I could redeploy but this may just postpone the problem for another month. In 18 days Expression Web may refuse to run. What do I need to do? Thanks.

Thanks. It's taken me a while to get back to this. I've tried connecting through a serial cable (and enabled the serial port in BIOS and checked COM1 appears in the device manager). Still no joy. It just won't connect. I've got 2 boards in a simlar situation. One is serial only - connecting though direct serial or serial-USB converter doesn't work. The other has a USB port - it will connect though direct serial to XP but not Win7, it won't connect though USB to either XP or win7. I think it may be a problem with Windows 7 and serial connections. I don't know. I'll lift the boards off, get the serial numbers, and contact Promethean.

Daniel, Thanks, but it still generates the error For the server name, there are two possibilities, there's the address that appears in the URL bar, and there's the address shown in the email control panel when I click MailOptions: Manage Myself : Settings for POP, IMAP, and SMTP access... . The addresses are different. I've tried them both, but get the same error.

Witch, Did you get this working? I know it's 2 years ago. I have just obtained an old Promethean IWB from another school. It's an old model and is serial only. It's powered up - jack plug into back of serial cable, and connected to a Windows 7 machine via Keyspan serial/USB converter. ActivManager will not see the board. I've disabled the machine's serial port and set the Keyspan and ActivManager to both use COM1. No joy. This machine does actually have a serial port, so I'll try that when I get a cable long enough. Thanks.

Do you mean it's possible in 2008 R2 to create an iSCSI connection to a non-iSCSI capable NAS? I didn't know that was possible. I have an old Buffalo Terastation NAS which not supporting iSCSI limits my options.

After some experimenting, sending sweary emails to our ICT teacher, I've found that Live@Edu does have a limit on the size of the list (as PEO said) and doesn't take wildcards. I've used webman's list, instead of Arthur's.

I've been trialling ARCserve, Yosemite and BackupAssist for a small office environment this week. I've decided to go with BackupAssist. Nice and simple and it works and is low-cost. Creates a Grandfather, Father, Son rotation easily, and backs up to NAS. Backs up Hyper-V as well. At the time of writing, I have about 30 mins experience of BackupAssist, but am already impressed enough. Yosemite was good, but a bit too powerful for the needs here. CA ARCserve - very complicated, but good for centralised backup of multiple servers.

I'm not sure if your problem is related to mine, but putting the FSDs in separate groups worked - the backups go to where they're supposed to.
-
I think I'm having the same problem. I've created 3 FSDs: daily, weekly, monthly (all subfolders on a share on a NAS). And three backup jobs to go to each of these folders. Except they don't - the jobs just backup to the folder used by the previous job. They're all going to the same folder. I think it's because the FSDs are in the same group. I'll create three groups and see how that does. I just don't understand ARCserve! It makes no sense.

Scripted Windows Backup is probably just what I need for a small setup I look after. Could you provide any info or links on how to get it going? I'd ideally need monthly and weekly full backups with daily incremental, all to NAS, overwriting old media when appropriate. Surely this could be done with Windows Backup, scheduled jobs and scripts. Thanks.

How do we buy DPM 2010? Is it only available as part of System Center, or can it be bought separately? This for an environment with just 2 servers, they only need scheduled file backup to NAS with automatic reusing of old media. I'm trialling ARCserve, It'll do the job, but something simpler and cheaper would be better.

After about 1 or 2 hours on the phone with CA, I think it's fixed. The problem was caused because I had chosen a media rotation scheme (GFS) with a single FSD, like I would with Symantec BE. On ARCserve, a media rotation sheme requires multiple FSDs. The solution was to create a custom schedule to do daily backup to the FSD. That still doesn't explain how I should create a GFS media rotation. I imagine I need three jobs with custom schedules, doing the Granfather, Father and Son jobs each to their own FSD. I suppose that would be the same as creating a media rotation scheme with three FSDs. I think ARCserve is much less intuitive than Backup Exec, then I've had years of experience with BE. Why is backup so complex anyway? It's just copying files from one place to another on a schedule, surely?

Thanks for replying. I did eventually get registered for support and they phoned me back the next day, which was great. They emailed me the manual Brighstor ARCserve Backup for Windows Administrators Guide r11.5, and told me to read p188 on creating a File System Device. I found that I had already correctly created an FSD, but went through the instructions again anyway to create another. The problem still exists. The FSD is in group GROUP1. If I manually run the backup, I still get the message Backup Server [sERVER2] : Please insert media in device group: GROUP1 1. Image attached. I have created an FSD, but ARCserve Backup still requests new media after running the first backup. The first backup succeeds, but subsequent backups fails requesting blank media. Please help! I don't understand why ARCserve backup is treating an FSD as device with removeable media. (I'm used to Symantec Backup Exec, which just creates new files and overwrites old files depending on retention rules. I was expecting ARCserve to do the same).

I'm on the free trial of CA ARCserve Backup r16. After coming from Backup Exec, I'm not finding it easy. How do you set it up to do a series of GFS backup jobs to disk. At the moment, it runs the first backup job OK, and creates a set of files on the NAS in the format S0000001.ctf. OK so far. All the subsequent backups fail. It asks for a new media, like it thinks the NAS is a tape drive. I get "Please mount media in the device group GROUP1". How do I tell it that the target is a NAS and that it should create new files as it needs to. Backup Exec used to do this no problem? CA's support website is no use. Thanks.

Backup Exec 2010 R2 SP1 BE appears to be running well, existing backups are running successfully and backing up many GB each time. I've tried to create a backup job to backup a folder containing about 30GB. The job stops after about 20 seconds with no errors. The job summary (below) shows no files, and only 3 directories. There should be 48,000 files! Also, if I try to restore, the catalogs show only empty directories, makig restoring difficult. Help! Without BE producing any error messages, I don't know where to start. ------------ Job summary:-

Hello, On Live@Edu, users have the option to open another mailbox (click username in top right corner). What does this do exactly? The help says "To obtain full access to a mailbox other than your own, contact your help desk or system administrator". I'm the admin and I don't know. What do I need to do to allow other users to access a mailbox? I've seen threads relating to running PowerShell scripts. Is there way to change mailbox permissions through the Live@Edu GUI? Thanks.

Thanks for that. That's a better way if the machine names aren't all the same format, like mine. For the default printer, I just check the box "Set this printer as the dfault printer". Or were you referring to a situation where there may be more than one checked as the default?
-
The solution I've gone for is to deploy shared printers to users, with item-level targetting to detect the computer name (wildcards accepted). Also corresponding entries to delete the printers when the computer name doesn't match. Works like a dream. (I didn't like the idea of deploying TCP printers to computers, as it bypasses the print server and so there's no central logging or control).
-
I'm just going down the route of GPP to deploy printers. It works well for deploying by users, but it's not so easy to deploy by computer. (This is probably by design and I'm just not understanding something). Adding printers to users, there's an option to add a shared printer. Adding to computers (more useful in a school), there's no options to add a shared printer (only TCP/IP or local printer) or set the default. Is there a way round this? I want users to see the printer in the room and have that as default. Thanks. EDIT:- http://claymoore.wordpress.com/2009/02/04/deploying-tcpip-printers-with-group-policy-preferences/ has a lot of detail on deploying TCP/IP printers. It doesn't use another printer server - just the local machine. It does use a path to the printer on a server as a reference for settings and drivers. Still can't set it as default, though.

I'm trying to do the same. Has anyone managed to do this? I've tried the SMTP protocol. Now I'm trying the Exchange protocol, which gives a different response. Server: https://www.outlook.com/email.domain (as suggested in the Spiceworks help) Error: Error on outgoing settings: Unexpected response from the Exchange server received. Are you sure you entered the correct address? Still haven't succeeded, though.

EdExcel ESM through Smoothwall
OverWorked replied to OverWorked's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Thanks Mike, you got me on the right track. Full solution was:- In Smoothwall: guardian » web filter policies » exceptions - add ESM server's IP to Source exception IP addresses In ESM server proxy settings - use port 801, no auth credentials needed. After doing the above, ESM was still producing an error on logon. I phoned EdExcel, they said my ESM was too old to update. They talked me through manually uninstalling it, deleting files and reg keys, and installing the latest version from EdExcel's web site. All working now. -
Hello, My Edexcel ESM won't connect to EdExcel http://www.catglobal.com (ports 80 or 443) through Smoothwall. I've added proxy exception for the site and firewall outgoing rule for the ESM server - it's made no difference. I've entered the proxy details in the IE settings and the ESM options on the ESM server, and can browse the web from it. I've contacted EdExcel and verified it's a connection issue. Help! Thanks.

Disable Network Icon in Windows Explorer via GPO
OverWorked replied to frognet1970's topic in Windows 7
No Entire Network in My Network Places - this setting is Win 2000, 2003, XP only. The reg hack is the way to do it in Win 7.
