  1. My bad, i ment ppt.
  2. has this moved anywhere since jan?
  3. i've used xibo, and it's wasn't the best solution for us. it didn't like taking any of our powerpoints made in 2007 and saved as a .ppt. dunno why but gave up after 30 mins.
  4. easily done using php and ldap requests i believe.
  5. we get ours on 2 week placements to make cables, build machines, move stuff about and become the first port of call for help kinda stuff. normally we go with them around the school so their never unsupervised. when i was doing my work experiance over sixth form i build a 2008 RC 1 domain up from scratch, testing it kinda thing. made, or attepted to make some packages, for cubase and some other things.... loads of stuff i guess they can do but you should stick by them in case they come accross anything that u need to hide quickly (the old head teachers body behind some switches in a cab)
  6. surely you just need a router at ither end then?
  7. Am i right in thinking a Royal navy helicopter landed in the school feild today... checks DVD i made - yes it did indeed land. Was sureal, an actual royal navy helicopter landed in the feild and loads of kids got a tour.... and the staff of course.
  8. You have spare time - so lucky....
  9. how were you planning to backup to tape without having an OS that can see a tape drive?
  10. i have i think - PM me your e-mail and i'll add you up.
  11. so something like thunderbird would do? not sure if it can be setup using profiles but i think it can; http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Internet_Email/Email/Email_Clients/Q_22508142.html

    Exchange 2010

indeed - sorry, here it is... https://82.198.225.195/exchweb/bin/auth/owalogon.asp?url=https://82.198.225.195/exchange/&reason=0
  13. Second that. i've re-read your origonal post and would do somthing like this. adsl 1 -> 10.0.0.1 adsl 2 -> 10.0.0.2 load balencer -> 10.0.0.3 then set up DHCP to the following order; 10.0.0.3 10.0.0.2 10.0.0.1 depending on your ADSL modems/routers you could get away with just a machine for a load balancer. hence you need a load balencer. what modems/routers are you using?
  14. Indeed a good way to go, but still has the issue of not being redundant enough. By having one gateway you have a single point of faliure. It's possible to have multiple gateways on an XP machine. But i'm not sure if you can script that. On DHCP within windows server 2003 it's possible to have multiple gateways, they're called routers, setting 003. A Gateway is a Router, or has the same function as a router.
  15. Are you using just e-mail or calanders and tasks too?
  16. we're looking at moving to LTO, but have inheritited the ATI autoloader and it's ok for now, even tho the tapes are expensive.
  17. We do??? I've never had even close to the budget for that kind of setup, we have next bussiness day (sometimes 4 hour) cover on the servers and a setup that allows us to keep the admin system running with a couple of hours fiddling. We have RAID, redundant PSU's, D2D2T and UPS but not entire redundant servers. I meant 'we' for AD and DNS are redundant. Sorry for the confusion. We dont have the budget for fully redundant servers ither.
  18. We have servers with agents running on them (software), which connect over IP to our backup server. The backup server is a NAS with 4TB of storage and has the tape drive connected directly to it by SCSI. So if you were using SAN's you could connect via iSCSI, then you would also need an actual host for the D2D2T parts. Idaelly you would want the to tape part somewhere easily accessible on a seperate machine to your VM enviroment.
  19. we have a sony ATI3 tape loader on a 4GB NAS doing D2D2T. Highly recomend it over mirroring a SAN. the best way to work out if a mirrored san is needed is to ask the following question; does it cost more to replicate the data in real time than if the data were to be offline for a 24hr period. if the answer it that it costs more for the SAN then dont bother with it. monney would be better spent on having a decent back up in place (read D2D2T). to throw more spanners in, if your data/applications are mission critical eg google, then you should be looking at clustering your servers so that if one fails there is a complete reserve waiting to take over. Banks do this. we all do it in schools with medium sized networks (we have 3DC's, 4DNS here) infomation that would be usefull is what the data is, how many users connect concurrently, how many virtual servers and how many actual servers. as you say your small and only have about 1TB of data. worst case senario is that you need to set up a new server off site, and then get all of your data onto it from tape. which would take a few days to complete fully i reckon (depending on tapes and if your willing to work 24hr/day). personally i would look at something like having a smaller array for ''actual'' work (14 160GB drives in 2 raid 6 sets) then a larger array for archives and electronic documents (14 1TB drives in 2 raid 5 sets) then in a room other than your server room, an array made up of say 42 2TB drives in raid 5 sets for backups (daily) , and mirrored to tapes weekly of course. that way you have fast reliable storage for the places that get the beating, large reliable storage for rarely used documents, and large amounts of space for keeping backups. it's late so sorry if i've missed something or repeated someone else.
  20. monday morning - apart from it being a misrable day, whats gone wrong so far? 1. a roof caved in over the weekend, 2. the drains are blocked so the playgrounds flooded, 3. the postgress service (we're RM) wont start, so nothing is working quite as it should. 4. the knock on effect of 3 means i wont be able to do the remote work i need to tonight incase it happens again. nice....
  21. how many doctors have we got left before the end of the world???
  22. On my home network; slowest server is a windows 2000 DC with 300MHz PIII with 256MB RAM, slowest workstations ia a 900MHz PIII with 1024MB RAM i think. At work slowest server is 2.8GHz dual Xeon with 2024MB RAM. Fastest is 2*4 core Xeon @ 3GHzish with 4GB i think.
  23. there pretty bad.....
  24. We've got superstack 3 here, had no real issues our 'core' switch died once but was replaced by 3com.
  25. They're not that bad are they???
