  1. I've tried and failed at this one. MS Proxy server is pretty crappy. It isn't supported to run on anything more than NT4, although you could try forcing it to run in a compatability mode (dont think this will work/or even if there is one for NT4). Squid is alot better; more stable, more support, runs on almost any hardware/OS, FREE! Running a proxy for caching inside a virtual box? Is this a good idea? Agreed it would solve the problem, but you woulnd't get the performance of running on a dedicated box. Depending on your network size, squid will hapily run under ubuntu on a 1.1GHz machine with 256 RAM, for say 1000 users. What is your goal by having a proxy?
  2. I certanly find it easier to read than Times new roman. (i'm dyslexic btw). Side note - why do dyslexic people know how to spell dyslexic?
  3. You have Acer servers? the Xserve is 30 inches deep. Iknow thats only 5 more but still. most server cabs that are designed for racked servers are about 800 or 1000 deep. Freecycle has moved or something, i was a member but it wnet down, and the premisis assastant (also a member) told me something had happened to it.
  4. I no this can be done but not sure how. The obvious one is that some sites are told not to use the proxy (defined in your brouser/OS settings) so are not cached, but some are sent thought the proxy but not cached there. It may help to post a note on the Squid-users mailing list, Amos Jeffries is usually a fountain of all knoledge when it comes to Squid.
  5. Nooooo - no longer the geekiest lol. Nice one.
  6. 50.29586% - supergeek. The GF is refusing to take part in this....
  7. Group policies have security settings, like folders do, please see attachment.
  8. Try adding authed users with read and execute permissions. You will need this in the NTFS security settings on the server and allow access when sharing the folder also. once you have it working you should find that you can start restricting permissions to make it a little more secure. Also deny everyone but administrators from viewing folder contents (list folder:deny it) that way if they do come accross the folder they cant see sub folders of files.
  9. Whats wrong with comic sans?
  10. Cheers guys, i've moved to the latest version. Didn't realise it had been brought out by Sun. What an obovious thing to do... sorry for wasting your time(s).
  11. Thanks, but anything more like a PDA, looking for somthing i can get on ebay cheaply if possible.
  12. Hi, I'm looking for a PDA with a Barcode reader that will scan directly into a text feild within a webpage. Does anyone know of such a device? Cheers
  13. Not yet - i will at work tomorro. I have the image somewhere on my desktop.
  14. I've been using it for XP boxes and MS server OS's for a while now - but want to use ubuntu within it, and having issues, http://www.edugeek.net/forums/thin-client-virtual-machines/43397-virtualbox-ubuntu-8-04-desktop.html#post399536. It's a nice program and i would never go back to using MSvirtualPC. havent got my fingers on VMware yet.
  15. I get exatly the same.
  16. I'm trying to run ubuntu 8.04 desktop under Virtual box, and its having an issue. After the kernal is loaded i get a blank screen, see attached. Am i doing something wrong? I have tried turning ACPI off (as per http://www.edugeek.net/forums/nix/16671-ubuntu-virtualbox.html) and also using other images, such as Xubuntu 8.04 and Edubunu 7.04. Nothing works. I get a kernal panic when running Edubuntu, see attached. XP boxes run fine on it. Physical hardware is a NC10. You can see my settings in the first screenprint. cheers
  17. It kills my NC10 when adding a new adaptor to the host. Bluescreens it. But other than that it's been ok.
  18. Some of the cheaper cards offload to the processor anyway (or so i've herd) which makes them almost software RAID anyway.
  19. Interestingly i've herd good things about the server disks that they are close to, i wonder if their actually the same hardware but different firmwares? The only reason i'm looking at the green and not the black series is that i dont strictly need performance - just the space and some resilance if a drive fails. I wouldn't say these were high end at all, quite the opposite. I only need IDE performance, and i think i will get that with these drives with software RAID. Only reason for going software RAID is it's cheaper. Agreed sinking 160/140 (thanks for that) on a drive for paritity is steep for a home server, but with hardware RAID it would be that and a card, and what happens if the card goes and i cant get an identical - i'm screwed, with software i just pulg in another 2TB drive to any port, and rebuild away. The OS is on a RAID 1 array (hardware RAID and i'm currently looking into testing what would happen if i remove the card). But i'll be keeping regular backups (<90days apart to avoid tombstoning). But not of the 6TB of data. I dont have enough $$$ for that. OS is sitting on 2 blue drive 500 GB each on a startec RAID controller. I'll be testing the performance soon.

    scsi question

yes; i have to get from the card to the tape drive - and i want to go around all the other stuff when i add 4 more drives, so would like to flatten it out up the side of the drives. the case is in the pic - need to go from the bottom PCI to the top drive space, the CD and tape will be swapped over.
  21. A+, MCP, N+, MCSA, take your pic. I guess a good start would be the A+, it's relatively simple and usefull for your enviroment. Most techs have it, want it or are above that level. It's industry recognised and cross platform supposedly. quite easy to get. cost about 100 or 200 quid so well with in CPD budgets usually.
  22. I'm thinking about getting 4 WD 2TB green drives for my newest server. They will be in software RAID 5, and not hosting the OS or virtual memory. Win server 2003 as the OS and i'll make them dynamic as u have to to use windows RAID. My question is are the drives any good? The performance mentioned here http://www.edugeek.net/forums/hardware/31905-2tb-hdd.html#post300527 is good. And they'll basically be host virtual HD images for virtual servers and storage for my files, and some for my family. (They get 100GB or so, i get the rest... yes i need this space, and yes it has to be 4 drives. also on a side note - can i get them anywhere cheaper than £160 inc vat each? cheers
  23. Rite so i've got a sever 2008 DC, but it's causing issues cos it's different. I cant install my RAID tools cos the software is designed for xp/2003 and not 2008/vista... which is gay. So i have to reboot to find the condition of the RAID set. It wont pick up my tape drive. And i cant get to NTbackup. does it even exist... who noes. Dont get me wrong i like it but it's just not for me. I thinks i'll be moving back to 2003 and running 2008 in a virtual box.
  24. simlar issue - did you ever get the software?

    scsi question

kwl, thats what i was hoping for, simple. what you think about --|RB903|24" HARD DRIVE-SCSI CABLE | CPC
