Yes that's pretty much it. We've got a number of Windows 7 machines (desktops, laptops, netbooks) with 1GB of RAM and while they are fine for light use, you can certainly notice the difference once a few Office apps are open. I'm not too concerned about the student ones as they usually use IE and Word only, but some Admin machines I have had freezing up regularly with heavy use of Outlook and SIMS (unsurprisingly). Up it to 2GB and things improve dramatically

I've got Starter on my netbook, and while I thought I would just blitz it and put XP on or a full version of 7, I never have. Because the 3 program limit has never come into force, and things like not changing the background has never bothered me. Windows 7 (any edition) is not great on any netbooks with only 1GB though I've found

Right, this has annoyed me for months now, and it happens to my colleague as well so isnt just my machine. When you are using AD Users and Computers, Group Policy Management, etc, sometimes it doesnt allow you to delete, and typing certain letters (eg when naming a GPO or OU) will cause it to flash and the tree to reload. Normally if I start the MMC again it will be fine, sometimes it will be fine all day, sometimes not. Has anyone else experianced this? i know there might not be a fix but I just want to know I'm not the only one! lol

Snow. Is anyone else thinking along the same lines?
sidewinder replied to tech_guy's topic in General Chat
I love the snow, and a day off if the school is closed is always welcome I dont understand how anyones work could build up if there is no-one in? Perhaps if you had lots of things planned for specific days, but personally for me if the school was closed tomorrow my workload would be the same on Thursday morning as it would be tomorrow morning -
Like the idea but theres absolutely no way I'd even manage a week of that

lunch and dinner (sometimes call it tea) here Its definately a north/south divide on the dinner issue - as can be witnessed on this thread and looking at posters locations. Down here, if anyone mentions dinner it is always assumed to be the evening meal. If someone referred to lunch as dinner it would sound pretty unusual

We've done this with at least 5 from 2015's. All have been fine apart from one that was left in too long Shows the usual supreme quality of HP Printers

150ish staff, 1700 students I dread to think what the consumable costs are..

Wish we 'only' had 105. 135 network printers + 20odd MFD's here Ridiculous

'Welcome to Macintosh' is supposed to be good although I've still not got round to watching it Probably one for Apple fanbois though rather than haters I agree Micro Men was fantastic

Admire the ingenuity but I certainly wouldnt want to be using whatever is connected to that cable! If we have a similar situation here I usually terminate both ends with an RJ45 connecter and use a coupler

Just prepared 12 eMacs to go to "Computers for Schools"
sidewinder replied to Carter's topic in General Chat
Yeah eMacs are/were decent machines but weighed an absolute ton. Though that had an advantage - we've had iMacs stolen but never an eMac when we had them...what burgler wants to carry one of those?! -
Dont wash for the rest of the week and rub lard on your face. By Friday you should have a ready made spotty costume

Access Based Enumeration is where only the folders that users have permission to view are shown on a share, rather than everything. As far as I can remember anyway. Strange that it was turned on for you though, thought it was something you had to enable.

Yeah Sainsburys are £37.97 till Sunday I think, or £27.97 if you do £30 of shopping there

We've had similar errors to this since we went to W7, most notably the 'user profile cannot be loaded' one, which is now sorted. But recently this one (Access is denied) seems to be cropping up more and more. Currently about 4 teachers a day are having it and while it is fixable, I have no idea why its happening, and its taking time to sort it out. The easiest way I've found to solve it, is to literally create the user a new home folder, copy their documents back to it, assign them permissions and then log on and recreate the profile. The odd thing is that recreating the profile isnt enough, I have to redo the whole home folder (or redo permissions) Obviously staff have full control to their own folder, but the error still occurs, seemingly randomly. The error in the event viewer on a computer that they have tried to log on to is: Windows cannot load classes registry file. DETAIL - The system cannot find the file specified. Important to note this is not per computer. Perhaps something on a single computer originally corrupts it, I dont know, but the error happens on any computer they try to log on to. Our Home folder structure (which I'm not sure is the optimal way to do it) is like: username profile.v2 My Documents Pictures Favourites etc etc. Users have full control of the root username folder, with permissions inheritable and propagating down. Any ideas? I wouldnt say we're tearing our hair out, but its annoying to say the least

Do you ever run a computer without an antivirus and/or firewall?
sidewinder replied to bladedanny's topic in General Chat
I always do. I'm fairly confident that I wouldnt pick anything up but why take the risk when an AV program is free and doesnt take up too much resources. I dont on my Macs though...I realise I should but I dont really know any if I'm honest (in the same vain as AVG) -
Oh for goodness sake. May as well get rid of all signs and lamposts as well then, cluttering up the streets Also "BT hopes to complete them by 2011, when speeds of 40 megabytes per second will be guaranteed. Average speeds in the UK are currently just 5.2 megabytes per second." Cmon this is 2010..you would think someone would have known the correct term and spotted it before printing

^ hmm Acer and high quality finish are 2 things that I never thought I'd hear together to be fair though I havent used anything from them in a couple of years

Our Art department use a Canon iRC3080 copier which they use as a network printer. The printer is added to clients manually, by installing the driver, then added as an IP printer with LPD. It works fine...for a bit Almost daily, each client will report the printer as paused. Trying to unpause (as per OS X) requires an admin password - annoying but workable, except this doesnt fix the problem. After a password is put in they get an error -50 If I delete the printer then add it straight away again, it is fine. I am currently having to do this about once a day (sometimes twice or more) to 25 macs. It's driving me and the art department insane. I've tried both the UFRII and PS driver from Canon, and various versions of each. The problem still occurs. However, it only seems to occur on 10.6. Until recently we had some Macbooks on 10.5.8 and I never heard a complaint about them until I upgraded them. Anyone got any ideas, or is there a better way I could be setting this printer up?

^ Thanks for that Hydra...the layout is quite similar to mine, and I was wondering whether I needed to perhaps re-write mine - evidently no!

Oh, yay then, because it has that

Hmm could be good news - I think it could be a Turbo afterall - putting the reg number in to get insurance quotes comes up with 306 TD LX, and the V5 has it down as a LX DT. Is there any physical way I can tell for sure, anything on the engine? I just assumed it wasnt as it didnt have the TurboDiesel badge on the back
