Correct, they were not allocated in that way. It may be they are thinking of laptops that may be provided as part of a pupil premium or LAC (looked after children) grant which would then belong to them. The devices from last year via the DFE belong to the school once that pupil has left.

Considerable experience with all 3. Fortigate was and still is an excellent firewall, but filtering was very much an afterthought. I don't however know how much that has improved. Smoothwall seems very overcomplicated for the sake of it and support, despite recent improvements is not doing much to put people's mind at rest. Sophos XG (we use this currently) has been excellent all round, far easier to get head around than Smoothwall, very capable for filtering, firewalling, routing etc and extremely reliable. Support has been good both from our ISP Wave9 and Sophos directly. Only negative has always been the reporting which isn't particularly education-friendly but with Fastvue bolted on this is far, far better than any other offering I've seen.

The pertinent question here which hasn't been answered is how schools can trust your platform again after the previous issues regarding privacy.

Did I understand it correctly that they accuse ULT of having prior prejudice because they already have said competitor's product in some of their schools? If so, yes they should be ashamed of themselves. If they're happy with the product in those instances but want to go out to tender for a trust-wide setup they're legally obliged to do so as per the procurement legislation. They will have bias for (or indeed against if they didn't like it!) that competitor as a result of their experience, so if Bromcom didn't bring anything new/improved to the table why would they consider it over and above what they know? It feels childish from Bromcom.

I still can't get my head around under what circumstances it's so broken when everywhere I've ever deployed via GPP it's only ever failed on one machine because of connectivity or other unrelated issues. Baffling.

Ugh, scratch this. They've changed VisualRF to floorplans on a site basis. This actually is better in my opinion, but in the process they've lost all our AP placement data, heatmap data etc. If you tick the box that hides AP's that have already been placed, it hides all the APs suggesting they're there somewhere, or more likely there's a bloody large bug involved!

Exactly my point - with most of these being temporary setups, nearly none of them will be done in a controlled, safe manner. Or they'll start out that way and after a single use will look like someone's dragged a rake through a server farm.

Eek, rookie error on my maths! Some of the random chargers I see around are awful out of the box and even worse by the time they've been plugged in and out a few dozen times - you *need* something with protection over and above the basics unless you're personally overseeing it all. I wouldn't trust any staff to check over the cables after every use

You should avoid using any form of extension socketry - any safety inspection will have you dragged over hot coals for that. You need something designed for that purpose so you're not at risk of overloading your circuits which can come round quite easily - for example 16 tablets, each normally charges at 2amps each - if you have 2 x 4 port USB hubs charging thats already 16amps on a 13amp MAX socket. One VERY important thing. Like many systems needing updates, and even more so with Capita, DO NOT EVER INSTALL ANY UPDATE IMMEDIATELY UPON RELEASE. Unless absolutely necessary, give it a week minimum. Watch Edugeek and Capita's "support forums" for other people having problems. Wait for Capita to release a fixed version of that broken update. Install Filesets are OK as there's little that can go wrong, but patches and the sims quarterly version updates absolutely!

Understood it may be a "rush job" but we know better than most, sometimes you have to tell people to hold their horses if they want something doing properly and reliably - especially when it's vital information. ESPECIALLY when it's potentially life saving or threatening information.

Correct - and whilst they're not at home, there's no reason they can't be used in school. As long as they're allocated to that child then there are no known problems, and it's a bonus at the moment with working in bubbles, particularly if some have limited IT access within those bubbles.

by year 10 I assume you mean who are now year 11. Yes, they can be used in school, there's no stipulation otherwise.
