Thanks to all of you who PM'd me from the other thread.

 

Please find attached to this post the zip containing the server monitor to install on your web server, install instructions are in the readme file included.

 

I have started this thread in order to keep questions and requests seperate from the other mixed thread which was confusing people.

Just as an update, people have been asking "What does it do?" well...

 

This is a web based tool that ....

 

Any network connected device can be PING'd for a simple connectivity test

Any Windows connected device can have individual services monitored via a WMI check.

 

If a PING check proves unsuccessfull the status of the item is changed to down

If a service check fails the status of the item is changed to down.

 

Things Still To Do:

Email notifications

If a service check fails set status to warn instead of down.

It is actually going to be integrated into the helpdesk but will have a few enhancements as a stand alone bit of software as well as any bug fixes that maybe required.

what is the correct way to add bespoke services?

 

When I try to add the finance system service, the server status is Up, but when you click on the link it is offline. This suggests to me that it is not actually looking at the service.

Make sure when you add your service that the name and detail correspond correctly as per the attached image of the service windows from services.msc

Same here. I had the same thing the other day with the answering machine thread attachment

Edu issue or SWGfL? - I've tried various proxies and no luck on any!

I have been able to open the zipped file and see inside using 7-Zip but when the archive is extracted it creates a file called 'MLSM' [no extension]

 

Going back to the archive again I can go one level deeper and extract a folder called 'MLSM'

 

In this folder there are various folders and ASP files [Active Server Page] but no executable. I don't think that I can ASP on our network so I guess I can't use this.

@DaveP: If you have a windows server then you can run this, the download has a readme file with instructions on getting this running.

Great tool, thanks. Just wondering if i'm doing something wrong, when I try to view the services running on the servers I add the say Server is offline, but the ping test shows the server as up. Is there something I have to enable somewhere to allow wmi to report to my webserver or something like that?

yeah i'm having that issue. not looked into it that much though.

At the moment the ping and WMO checks are not done at the same time with the WMO check only being done when you click the link for the server on the status page

 

I will be changing that logic so that when a check is performed ping is done first then if required the wmi check is done at which point the status is shown as up, warn or down

Thanks Oz, been using it for a while now and it has come in useful when staff complain about laptop trolley's and wireless. We just point to the screnn and ask if they have plugged in the network cable.

It has not been tested on there yet but if you do want to give it ago you will need to do the following:

 

1 - enable ASP support in IIS7

2 - enable parent paths support in IIS7

3 - enable MS Access support in IIS7

 

All of the above are supported but not enabled on Server 2008 / IIS7

nice1 chap...........I've just put it on a IIS7\2008 box......got it partly working.......getting 500 Internal Server error atm
