I'd assume it's just comments but I don't quite know why our IIS server is throwing it's toys out of the pram about them. We have all the pre-requisites installed for your tool. Any ideas? Edit: Ignore this - seems the IIS I put this onto was configured very specifically for something else... so have put it on a fresh IIS and it's fine and happy. Edit 2: When I use WMI and specify any services - it says 'UP' - yet when I click the server (in the non-admin view), IE complains with an error. azrael78 Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 The error was due to setting the account/password in NT domain\user format - as opposed to just typing in the username. I do however, have a suggestion. Would it be possible to 'group' Services together? For example, keep services as separate entities - but allow the admin to create a group... say 'Domain Controller' - and associate services with that group, so you can add servers and then select the service group, rather than add many services? So that when you click on the server in the regular UI - it lists 'Domain Controller' (or the group name) and then lists the items in the group along with their status. Is this possible? I'm currently using v1.4 I think, whatever the latest posted in this thread is Az

I have gone some way to redo this method and use impersonation of the user accessing the monitor and this in part has worked ( for connectivity or PING ). As for your suggestion of grouping services I can see how this would be of benefit from a time point of view however v.1.5 due out at the end of the week will allow you to add all services and then "multi select" ones to remove so you do not have to do them one by one. Most of them are ISA 2006 servers so I'm guessing that's something to do with the firewall. Are there any debug logs for the WMI part of the tool? What exactly does the WMI part try to do - as I'm trying to ascertain why some servers have issues and some do not. They are all different domains and all have the same account as a domain admin. Any ideas?

Yes you could be right, in order for the server monitor to function correctly you will need to configure the firewalls to respond to ICMP echo (PING) requests and open it up on ports TCP 135, TCP 4168, UDP 9256 There is also an issue of you try to check services on the server that the server monitor is hosted on up to v1.4 of the monitor v1.5 fixes this problem Are there any debug logs for the WMI part of the tool? No there is not, v1.5 does have a failure log which would give you an idea as to why the failure is occuring. They are all different domains and all have the same account as a domain admin. This could be your problem, we have not tested the server monitor in a scenario where it will interogate across multiple domains so this could be where it is failing for you. Quick question - got it working, but when i add a service from the drop down list - my server highlights and has a link - but the link points to http://svrmon/# and the pop up wont open and show me the running services Any ideas? ICTNUT Posted November 2, 2009 Author Posted November 2, 2009 (edited) @mullet_man; a refresh does re-ping the item but that is from the perspective of the server that is hosting the monitor. When a connectivity check is done a single ICMP echo or PING is done and in turn gets a single response unlike the ping responses you get from the windows command line (4 of them) so it is possible that there may not be a response if for some reason at that point in time there is congestion on the network but if there was a second or third ping the response would be there. v1.5 which I am putting the finishing touches to has a more streamlined connectivity check and you have the ability to define how many times an item must fail prior to notification being sent out (email or desktop popup), that should provide more stability during the initial checks. We have been using the latest BETA at a couple of schools monitoring between 50 and 150 items plus services on a 5 minute refresh and so far all is looking good. The only thing I would say is having your admin area fully accessable to the outside world is not a good idea. v1.5 due out at the end of the week will secure this and would advise you wait until then before you make the status area available.
