Hi Folks At school we have a printing solution in place for printing and copying. Its seems the world and dog like to print and copy. We have been looking at reducing our printing costs, and we find that most of the copying is down to EXAM Papers and resource documents. Has anyone ever looked at software where you can scan in the exam papers, and distribute them to students and then have then complete the exam paper electronically? Anyone else any good ideas the save copying? I did suggest taking the paper away – that didn’t go down too well ;-) Cheers Chris

Hi Folks This post is aimed at all the schools that have successfully installed and are managing a BYOD solution within their school. We are in the process of configuring hours, but just curious of the thought of others. • Did anyone install a full NAP solution including having the client devices check for up to date AV / updates etc • Do you have a transparent proxy in your solution? • Do you allow your guests / to print • Do you allow your guests / students to plug their laptops into the school power to charge their laptops up? • Do you track what the students are browsing? • How have you authenticated them onto the wireless? • How have you protected your wired network? • Do you have an AUP that all your users have to accept before they come on line. Sorry for many questions but we just getting our head round it and its not as simple as just deploying the network. Many Thanks Chris

Hi Geoff Thanks for clarifying that. In response to Ollies bit, regarding creation of the initial first ESSID which vlan do we assign this too. Would we initially start with the registration vlan then packet fence automatically moves users to authenticated or isolation as I don't think we can assign multiple VLANS to once ESSID Thanks Chris

You're going to regret this! Okay, so we've got PacketFence installed. We've got a vague idea of VLANs and addressing although it's not exactly clear how we need to be using them... We've created VLAN 16 for registration and 17 for isolation then 18 for MacDetection. 16 and 17 are identified in the interfaces config in PF along with the management interface. We've then initially configured an Extricom controller with SNMP and two ESSIDs - public and private, the public being no encryption but MAC authentication against the packetfence server (added as a radius server) and the (hidden) secure ESSID which has MAC authentication, WPA2 enterprise AES only and again authentication server pointing to radius on packetfence. We're just a bit confused about how the VLANs and addressing should work - do we need to do DHCP for registration and isolation, how do the switches know to mediate the connection once a user is registered etc. Does PacketFence deal with DHCP on registration and isolation... if so, how? And then I assume for our actual authenticated VLAN, it's dealt with by our own DHCP.. or are we completely off? The documentation is pretty useless so we're feeling a bit lost with all this... sorry for the utterly confused and hectic post.. I'm sure we're getting closer to a working system haha. Edit: whoops - didn't notice was signed in as the boss.. same person/problem!

Exchange Online caps the number of per message recipients to 500. Exchange Online limits each user's total messages to 10,000 recipients per day, regardless of domain. Not sure about the control though

Hi Guys Thought i would ask the question - about creating a global resurce area in moodle that can be identified into departments and then contain content / resources that the staff and studets can share and upload. I have windows file shares at the moment that this works with - but moving all my content and resouces to the VLE would be most benefical for handheld / mobile devices. Hi Guys May of posted this in the wrong place but couldn't find an appropiate forum. I have a windows share and want to mount it as a mount point in ubuntu. I can mount it using cifs so i can get access to it, but can't get it to permantly stay after a reboot. I know i have to edit the file etc/fstab, but struggling with the correct code to get it to work. I use mount -t cifs /// /mnt/Shared -o username=/,password= As i said this mounts it but not permanantly. Any ubuntu gurus out there who may be able to point me in the right direction Thanks guys Cheers Chris

Hi Guys We have just been having a discussion about which VLE, and where we need to move forward with it. One question has come out, asking is there any academic gains from students who use a VLE against students who have no access to a VLE. As results is one of the important targets that schools have to work towards - have any schools found success in having them. Or are they just a waste of money, year on year with subscriptions and paying salaries for staff to keep them up to date All feedback and comments greatly appreciated Thanks Chris

Hi All I am now on the mission of implementing our VLE – Parental Access here at our school. A huge mission I know! I was wondering if any of you guys out there would want to share best practice with what you are doing with the VLE you are using, which one you chose – why you chose it and have you been able to successfully integrate it with any other systems, ie MIS, Cashless Catering, library systems or any others. Was this painless? Did you have the skilsl in house to do this on your own? And what are Staff, Students and parents able to see when they log in.
