Oh, I enjoy the holiday, there's no denying that one. Proper time off, with no distractions. Bliss. Some people don't understand how I can like being alone on Xmas day though. As if its some big sad disaster to enjoy a day alone.

Like I said

Do what makes YOU and your immediate family happy. It might involve putting your foot down with in-laws to get time to yourselves (we had to!), but don't just do things because that's what you're expected to do. Make it YOUR time of year.

I understand :)

@elsiegee40 - we always went for walks when they were younger but now it is difficult - and due to the amount of food around at Christmas, the food bribe, which I agree, used to work well when they were younger, doesnt work anymore sadly :(

Last week one of the ladies from Finance had a singing, dancing snowman delivered. I grimaced that it wasn't even December yet. I return a laptop to Science only to come back to my desk and what do I find?

12" sparkly pink christmas tree on my desk.

Well, two can play at that game. I have sticky labels! So I grab the nearest one, and draw a face (similar to ¬.¬) on it and stick it right where the star ought to be.

I think I may now be at war with Finance.. I must think of more retaliations.

As for my home, I never bother decorating or getting into 'the christmas spirit'. I'm very much bah-humbug. I don't buy presents for my family and they know it (granted, it's because I don't have the spare cash for it, they understand) and I'll have the christmas meal just to appease my mother/grandmother. If they didn't care, I honestly don't think I'd bother with any of it.

make Christmas work for you... If you don't want to celebrate, treat it as some time off.

I had a pretty rough time a couple of years ago and Christmas wasn't a whole load of chuckles, but it was time off, and an opportunity to catch up with some friends who don't celebrate Christmas, and to get out and walk... The further I got away I got from people, the better I felt. I was thoroughly refreshed after a week walking on Dartmoor. Being high up on Dartmoor on my own and watching everyone in Plymouth celebrating new years with fireworks, and not in the slightest feeling like I was missing out was excellent.

Le Edit... I forgot to mention that I share my office with two Jehovah's witnesses... So the office is a mercifully Christmas free zone too. They have their uses!

I don't have an issue with christmas, but I do have an issue with the way it is celebrated. It is too commercial and is just a money making scheme nowadays. Supermarkets have had mince pies out for months which go out of date way before december. Department stores having xmas cards out in august, but worst of all households putting decorations up in october/november. It is supposed to be 12 days before.

The spirit of christmas has gone.

PS. When does the panic buying begin in the supermarkets, because they are shut for two days?

Hate religion

Hate the expectation culture (kids that demand what they want, or expect gift vouchers)

Hate the hype and commercialisation

Hate the 2 months of christmas music on radio, tv and in every shop

Hate the low quality christmas specials, endless repeats, and replays of old movies

Hate over crowded shops when all I want is a loaf of bread (but that's Asda all year round)

Love the two weeks enforced holiday from work

Love new years eve

Hate the first day back in January!

When we were together, the ex and I always tried to make Christmas for our kids the same as it was for us when we were kids.

I remember a couple of Christmases, when I was very, very young, probably about 7 or 8 that truly seemed to be magical, and if I ever hear Tony Newley's 'Why' played on the radio, I'm instantly transported back to those times, even now. He featured on one of the Xmas shows on TV, singing it.......for indeed, yes, we had TV, even back then. I hope my kids have similar magical memories, when they're my age, but maybe it's just a Generation Thang.

Now that we're older, we have the joy of doing it all over again with the grandkids with the added bonus of not having to do anything. Eldest daughter does it all.

The thing I miss most about 'modern' Christmases is Nativity Sets. I'm not sure when they started to disappear from shop windows and municipal displays and decorations, but they seem to be very thin on the ground.

'Mary's Boy Child', 'Scarlet Ribbons', 'Fairytale of New York', Morecombe and Wise, jumpers for goalposts.......marvellous.

All this and two weeks off work.

May I suggest that we all compose a very very special version of the Twelve Days of Christmas, just for Mattx? I'll start:

On the first day of Christmas,

my true love sent to me

A humour bypass and an arrow in the knee.

Let the creative juices flow!

Sorry to correct you but the 12 days of Christmas actually start on Christmas Day and run through to what is known as 12th night (5th Jan usually)

There's your problem. You're getting your views from a bunch of po-faced misanthropes who, with luck, will be first against the wall when the revolution comes.

Christmas is a good time. You don't have to run around spending money you don't have an talking to people you don't like. Do it your own way. Switch off the TV and watch a film on DVD instead. Go to the pub. Spend some time with people you haven't seen for ages. Help someone out.

I love to cook for family and friends, I love to make mince pies and sausage rolls and my boozy christmas brownies and hand them out to cold carollers. I like seeing friends, and drinking too much. This year will be my baby daughter's first Christmas, and while she's too small to appreciate it, it's an added bit of joy for us.

Sitting around whining about how awful Christmas is instead of making it a good time for yourself and your loved ones is your problem here. If it's a bad time for you, make it a good time. If you've nobody to enjoy Christmas with, find some other people who are in the same position and get together and all make lunch together and share that time.

Amen to that! :D

Class! Christmas now has a militant wing! I love it me and you've all put me right in the mood for it, but I'm holding off Roy Wood, Slade, Wham! and the like until December. But in the meantime, I can legitimately make an interactive touchscreen advent calendar for the kids at school! Get in!

And in a nutshell, that's kinda one of the points being made here - you've just said that you should enjoy Christmas with others. Why? What if that is not enjoyable to you? Why can't we just enjoy the holiday in our own way, rather than having a religious holiday and an obsession with 'gathering' being forced upon us?

Well, I hate to break it to you, but the 'religious holiday' that's 'forced' upon you was around long before you were and will be around long after you're dust. So you can either ignore it or you can enjoy it, but either way, it's going to happen. Getting your knickers in a twist about how people aren't respecting your right to be miserable isn't going to change that.

As for the 'obsession with gathering' - nobody's saying you have to get together. I haven't said you 'should' enjoy Christmas with others. If your idea of a good time is sitting in your mum's basement for the whole of December, hating the world, eating cheesy wotsits then knock yourself out.

And again, you're being silly - I'm not demanding that I be allowed to be miserable. I don't want to be miserable. I just don't want to celebrate Xmas! I want to enjoy my holiday in my own way, which I should be allowed to, without being called miserable!!! Do you say Muslims are miserable because they don't celebrate Xmas? No? Why? Why should I be treated differently just because I don't celebrate a religious holiday?

Grow up.
