Disagreements are fine but please keep it decent whatever you watch whilst eating wotsits, and avoid personal remarks.

Pre-emptive strike! I used the old Jedi mind trick on all family members a couple of years back and they have all been iDevice converts for a long time. That said, I think it's started to wear off. My brothers joined the dark side and bough a Galaxy - though I wouldn't be setting that up either ;)

Nope.

 

Well, partially nope.

 

 

The only family I see is my Mum and my Uncle.

 

My uncle is a fellow geek. [And a pretty bad one at that. He blew up a computer trying to overclock it.] So he'll play with tech until it works.

 

My mum has no clue... so if it comes from me, the tech is pre-configured as part of my "make sure this works" testing. [No faffing on Christmas.]

This sounds like something I should get in on, hadn't heard of it before now!

 

Our house tends to be a bit frantic around Christmas, there used to be the usual attacking of the parents at 6AM, but now it tends to be the other way around. I have to be dragged out of bed for the present opening ceremony.. may face time in this year.

We get to see our grandparents though, which is always nice. There's a big family effort when it comes to Dinner too, everyone gets stuck in and gives a hand. Makes a nice change from most of us attempting to kill each other for various reasons ^^

 

As for the new iGadget, my sister is getting a iPhone for her 18th (Boxing Day) from the parents, and a laptop from me for Christmas. I may have my work cut out for me.

im just getting a dvd of some sorts.

 

My family isnt one to give big gifts at Christmas, As they are Christians its more about the real meaning for them. Presents are just an add on.

 

But my nan is coming down so this year could be different

A long, long ago... I had a six month old cousin died on Christmas morning. She had been perfectly healthy and had even received her first ever present. She was went to sleep and never woke up. Her death was attributed to SIDS (Sudden infant death syndrome - NHS Choices). After that, Christmas lost its charm and for me it was just another day.

 

Here I am twenty years later and I have an 8 month old daughter of my own. Every day I stop outside her room in the mornings and listen to her breathing (she has a laryngeal stridor, so she makes funny noises which to be fair can be hilarious) and I know its silly but it keeps me happy. So for the first time in a long while I'm looking forward to Christmas.

 

Luckily, it turns out that Olivia loves Christmas lights and shiney shiney things so I'm looking forward making an effort to dress the house to make it special for her and Anna (my wife, who loves Christmas and yes it has been difficult because I wasn't that bothered about Christmas).

 

Some times i thknk we lose sight of what's important. If you don't like Christmas, you don't like Christmas and conversely if you love it, you love it.

 

At the end of the day, do what makes you and yours happy, not what makes everyone else happy.

Humbug... But I'm going to have to pretend to enjoy it as my new wife has two under ten, and a 14yr old. Still, enough wiskey, and the cats climbing the tree, and I could find something to laugh about!

Well, the inlaws have disappeared 1500km west to Ontario, so that's problem number 1 solved (TFFT). The rest of my family are back in the UK, so christmas this year will be very different for us all. The kids aren't getting much this christmas, no I'm not being a tight git, I want them to learn what real family time is, and that it is more valuable than any gift. I've lost a number of family members around this time of year, and only last week lost my nephew, but you have to put that to rest and enjoy what you have. I am looking forward to christmas, and that's the first time I've said that in many years. I'll miss my family back home, but we're skyping the grandparents xmas morning and after that we are on radio silence. Just us, the snow, and some good whiskey..... Well, I'll enjoy the whiskey anyway.

And if the inlaws try to spoil it, it'll be a shovel and two dinks.... one across the head, and one as I break the soil :D

Oh but @mattx....I was relying on you for some book ideas for mrwITch this year - you always do so well. But I will be giving them to him for Christmas so you might not want to help, given your feelings about that occasion :)

Patrick Robinson - Any of the books with Admiral Arnold Morgan (Starting from Nimitz Class and ending with Too The Death)...very good series of books...not all reliant on the previous for the story line, but it does help. < If your man enjoys gritty military fiction.
