Cabbit Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Herro, I'm new here and just wanted to say hi before I went on with any annoying questions. I'm a geek person for a university, specifically I work for the lawyers, so that's fun (no sarcasm intended). I work for some really smart but technically challenged people and that's just all sorts of unique. For some reason my office makes constant use of bags of rice, duct tape, pliers and rubbing alcohol, beside the usual array of computer hardware and tools. As with most in-house techs, I'm expected to be system admin, web master, security expert as well as manager of a plethora of services and devices. So I'm never the expert when there is a problem. So hopefully ya'll will not be too adverse to giving a gal a hand once in a while. I have already spotted the gaming thread ... so while this is supposed to be a forum I am posting on with my work identity, the lawyers will have to put up with me occasionally dishing on video games for networking purposes. We are a large mixed comprehensive of 1900+ students and have 1000+ computers (laptops, thin clients and desktops). I have recently taken over responsibility for SIMS and all its parts. I find the posts here quite illuminating.

At the moment there are 6 of us. 3 consultants (AKA older technicians), 2 ex-apprentices now young technicians and a genuine apprentice. The consultants (?) have the following areas of responsibility: 1. MIS admin +helpdesk. 2. Server farm +network infrastucture. 3. Asset management + purchasing.

I am the type that love sharing knowledge as I like to learn from others too. I have been working in Desktop Support majority of my career and have recently finally gotten off it and now have joined SCCM group which is a whole new animal to me which would require new knowledge. From corporate software development to Education IT Support and from UK to USA. It's been a big change all round and 5 months in i'm really happy, I'm really starting to find my feet and get stuck into some bigger projects.

I am a teacher in charge of developing IT in a primary school, and every day my role gets bigger and bigger. I have experience in OSX servers but now I am part of the team setting up a Windows server (1st time). So I have been looking at all the great advice on Group Policies in the forums etc. Does this mean I am becoming a geek? Hamish
