I partly took the networking course with the goal to be more technically competent in the long term. Access has nothing to do with that. Aside from the networking course, one of my goals is to be more competent at programming, including knowing VBA
vikpaw Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 @Leonbc - i was in Brooklyn a few weeks ago, watched the Nets play the Trailblazers. CISCO stuff apart from the utter basics tends to be quite advanced and very specific. You'd probably do better with a more generic networking or IT course. All the same if you have an interest and an aptitude it might be useful, but if it's really in depth it may well scare you away.

However, I don't know what my starting point is without doing an undergraduate degree or attending night school ( I don't have much free time to attend night school - but I have more free time to do online courses. The problem with free online courses that don't offer the potential hint/glimmer of certification is that I lack motivation to complete them.

Secondly - can you write a bit more about what your current level of expertise is, and put a bit more flesh on the bones of what you want to do. I suggest you start a new thread, possibly in general chat, to do this so that our wider membership can see it and respond. We have some seriously clever and experienced people on here and I am sure they can help you decide the steps you need to take to achieve your goals and what to do to start the ball rolling

I've been lurking for a while now but I've only really started posting "properly" recently so I thought I'd better post in the welcome thread! I can't say who I work for or I'll get in trouble, but you've probably heard of us. I'm mostly registering so I can try and get an idea of what being a Network Manager in a school is like, as this is where I want to eventually end up in my career. I did teacher training for a while before realising that I was much better at supporting teachers than actually teaching myself, and I was already a pretty big computer nerd, so moving into Network Management/teching just seems like a smart idea. I'm currently doing a CCNA course (passed part 1 on monday, booyah!) and after that I'm going to look into doing some microsoft AD qualifications too. So uh yeah, hi!

I've completed my course and passed both exams, finally in the last leg of being an "Apprentice". Which makes me CompTIA A+ Qualified.

It was great to meet the folks there. I'm music technology coordinator for City Lit - an adult education college in Holborn near Covent Garden, London. I look after a suite of iMacs, outboard gear, music software and a team of music tech tutors and I pretty much get to decide on the kinds of courses we run.
