SYNACK Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 (edited) Hi guys, I'm Richard, and I've recently taken on a NM post at a London school. Nothing like a call on the Friday before you're due to start saying 'the network's down, help!' to get you flying out of the starting blocks! I think I learned more about the network in 9 or so hours yesterday than I would in a week normally! Anyway, I've been a lurker here for a while, so nice to finally say 'hi!'. I know that one, the rushed multihour session both learning the network and tracking down the fault as you learn. Stress++ but you learn in a hurry, you also usually encounter the thought WTF more often than is healthy. Anyhow, welcome to the participation side. Edited March 11, 2013 by SYNACK
john Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 Welcome to the forum Richard in a non-lurker capacity Haha, thanks! I think my success will be measured by how I manage to drag my newly-acquired CC3 network into the modern day! The solution to that is surely FDisk followed by a format command
FishCustard Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 The solution to that is surely FDisk followed by a format command Oh I wish!
Sunnyknight Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Morning all, Sunny here, currently an IT Tech in a High School in Walsall (WM). Currently a busy body, working on house extensions (gotta get it cat5'd all the way round! O.O), car bodywork, setting up my beast gaming machine, buying a gaming laptop, and planning a holiday! Lurking on here now and again for sneak peak information Hope we can have a right laugh! Sunny

jefferylackey Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 My names Jeff and I'm a new network administrator of a small company, 50 computers. I have no formal computer training, all self taught. There's not too much about any windows versions that don't know about. thought this server software would be in the same boat, boy was i wrong. it's a steep learning curve but i'm making it along just fine. I try to not go into AD too often, I check my backups almost daily. Most of our problems are with users not knowing what they're doing. clicking things they shouldn't be clicking. I have joined several forums for some additional help when i start to feel i'm over my head. Google is my best friend but it's good to have others seeing how Google is kinda stuck on himself.

vikpaw Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 all. welcome back @michael2k6. Hi there, Time for a reintroduction. Some of you will know me from my previous role, but I wanted to say publicaly I'm now at a school in West Yorkshire full time. Still using Facility / ePortal and currently considering Progresso. I look forward to rejoining you all presently Mic with all your experience, would you still go for Progresso?
russdev Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Welcome to all new members and suspect that @michael2k6 just likes the pain. Russell Russ
michael2k6 Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 @russdev - Ha. Yes I do.BRING ON THE PAAAAAIIN. @FishCustard - I'm quite confident I know more about progresso than anyone in the country that doesn't work for advanced, so I know the risks but also how to mitigate most of them. It's all about calculated risk and the value of the benefits of moving. @vikpaw - as above, probably yes but I'm not sure whether I would If I didn't have the experience I do have, maybe I would,it's difficult to think about it like that. The software is coming along nicely now and the implementation process is changing, the bad press that it's had is a result of things which are either rectified, can be worked around,or will be rectified by the time it's live at my place.
sonofsanta Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 @michael2k6 - knowing what you know, then, when do you think the migration will be worth serious consideration again? My MIS server is on old hardware and I live in constant fear of its collapse, but I don't want to go through the pain of rebuilding Facility if Progresso is 6 months down the line anyway. I'm balancing between two complete unknowns atm.
michael2k6 Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 @sonofsanta, I went to a small conference today held by Advanced to find out some more about the transition, what they've learnt from the issues seen previously, and what they're doing to address it. I'm impressed by the honesty and the attitude they have taken, and I'm hoping that the school I've just moved to will be live by September. So we'll see! Something to consider,is the recommended moving period will take up some of your time - by which I mean, your hardware doesn't just have to last until you decide to move but has to cover the migration period too of course. Have you done everything you can to optimise the environment it lives in? We're kind of hijacking the thread though so if you want to chat about it some more start one and mention me in it or PM me Mike 1
nab Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Hi All, Very recently I made the switch from Sound and Lighting technician in a community college, to an ICT Technician in an independant college. Figured I should get myself on a forum as I'm sure I'll be asking for help here and there! Its good to be able to discuss topics with like minded individuals in similar job roles so I look forward to the forth-coming threads. I'm not very expereienced in this field, I've passed the 801 & 802 A+ exams (and am currently studying for N+ too), however that's about it. Its a very recent change for me so please be gentle! Let the posting commence! Cheers all, nab.

XiJ Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Hi All. After browsing EduGeek for the Odd bit of problem solving / product info decided I should sign up and be more active. Myself and my small team look after a couple of dozen schools locally, providing all manner of IT Support and hardware procurement. (The other side of the business is the AV side and we have our own Interactive products) Hoping to be an active part of the community and even look at some forum sponsorship Cheers Jamie
