So yeah im and apprentice under Ric_ and so if I have questions I tend to ask him and yeah BSF is going to effect here as well but what the hell I enjoy what I doing and in not happened yet! jamin100 Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 Hi People, My names Ben, i'm 25 and work in a 2 form entry primary school in Birmingham. I have been in education IT for about 6 years. My previous job was in a team for a high school and sixth form. I've ran an RM version 2.8 network in coexistance with CC3 and played with all the RM products at my last school as we were one of RM's testbed schools. I left there to go to a small primary school with barely a network. 4 years later and i've got my own office/server room, 100 pc's/laptops 3 x Win2k3 servers and a 1GB backbone. Having working in education IT for this long i'm amazed i havnt found this site sooner. Will probably be here often!! Ben

Got employed by the tech support call centre of the DSG and never looked back. I adopted this Avatar as I practically managed a secondary network (and every thing that had a plug) with one novice technician for two years. Just like to say I couldn't have done it without help from this site! I am now Systems and Network Manager for an Academy that is due to open in September. Anyone here in Notts? My last MCP was in Windows 95! I have just learnt "on the job" so to speak. I'm hoping my new employer might fund some training, but there's so much out there I don't know what to learn! I've spent the last 4 months getting the debacle of a system into some semblance of order after a company based in Leeds (who shall remain nameless) believed that, if Richard Prior could become a computer genius after reading an advert on the back of a book of matches, then so could they (see Superman III). So, after initial firefighting like, getting the first succesful backup in over a year and configuring the Exchange Server, again something they couldn't manage to do in the 18 months they administered the system. I have replaced all the "off the self" £10 unmanaged switches that were the network backbone with a nice length of Fibre. On to step two of my Master Plan, and why I'm here today. I'm starting to look at getting the system ready for next year whilst implementing as much as I can in the interim. (It is so bad that to do what needs to be done, could be done over Easter break if eveyone in these Forums chipped in a day or two.). I'm looking at School Guardian 2008 as the current web filtering seems to rely on a short sighted bloke with a bladder problem reviewing everypage we request... and that's when he can be bothered turning his attention away from The Jerremy Kyle Show. I need to change all the security and access permissions as I found my predecessor found the easiet way to allow people to access things was to add them to the Domain Admins group. And to top it all off I am trying to get my head around Microsoft Volume Licensing and just what it allow me to do. So, a lot to do and I could sure do with some help so I will be trawling through the forums around here in search of as much helpful information as possible. As for me personally. 9 years in the Navy, 13 years for a third party IT support company, 6 years as a member of an FPS online gaming team and I support Arsenal. The latter being evident by my rather informative post rather than the short two liner by Trickstar (Well, Man U fans aren't known for their intelligence now are they ;) j/k) Anyway, I'm off to wonder how we managed to throw the title away and I'll probably cry myself to sleep again tonight.

I've run an RM version 2.8 and as an upgrade Connect 3 network along with MS Exchange 2003 and a Manage centralized Cisco G Backbone infrastructure. I am also an Open University Student a web designer using CMS (Joomla, Mambo) and the last 2 years I worked as an ICT instructor teaching Year 6, 7, 8 pupils. Had 30 months administering a UNIX system in the states (try being in charge of a system you have never seen before and the muppets you work with dont want to know). For the past 7 years I have mainly been repairing and fixing standalones. I support two schools in my local area, know very little about servers (at the moment) but I will get there. Is a learning curve supposed to be a vertical line? If I ask a dumb question, just humour me please

I'm a junior tech, 6 months in and enjoying the technical aspect, though the kids do give a fair bit of stick! Haptic Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 Hi Guy's Simon collins here from CP ltd, I came acrosss this forum with great interest as being an accredited Microsoft Educational Reseller we supply schools with IT equipment and software, After working in IT for nearly 15 years now I believe I can still learn more from forums like this for two reasons, bettering my knowledge in IT and to learn from your experiences where we as a company may be failing, I also am intersted in the school IT curriculum as I have a eight year old daughter who is passionate about computing, I suppose that comes from her geek of a father, Be aware I am not here to pitch for business but if I can help in any way regarding the sourcing of any particular item I'm only a pm away.
