starscream Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 Strange how this general forum is very IT related. I thought it would be more of a general discussion, unless I am in the wrong place. Anyway.. Today marks the official start of my hayfever season, usually I start earlier but today I forgot to take my antihistamines and I am dying here. I am trying to work on laptops and slobbering all over the keys. Anyone else find today is the worst for hayfever so far? Anyone find it really hard to concentrate at work for all the sneezing and nasel congestion? Think I need to invest in some benadryll and rhinolast! urgh *sniff*
elsiegee40 Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 Finished my hayfever about a month ago I start with the trees at the end of Feb and am clear by the middle of May! For me antihistamine tablets are useless. I have Flixonase on prescription and Opticrom eye drops. Hope you're feeling less rough soon

No air conditioning in this local authority I'm afraid It is boiling hot in here too but I can't open the doors or windows as that would let the pollen in! Catch 22! I blame my mediocre exam results when I was at school on hayfever. The exams came at the wrong time of year for me. Nothing worse than sitting in a boiling hot school hall with the sun blazing through the window onto your exam paper, sniffing my head off, running out of tissues and trying to answer trigonometry questions! Oh what fun! Isn't there some medical procedure available where they burn the lining of your nose off or something? Actually the receptors are in your head or something arent they? and the congestion is the narrowing of the airways or something? I dunno, all I do know is that I can hardlys see now!

We get free prescriptions here in Wales so I'll have to make myself a doctors appointment, but until then it's the cheap Tesco versions of hayfever tablets, or the BOGOF Zirtek. One-a-day just isn't enough, I'm usually on about 3!

However after that I tend to find that I'm alright. I feel really sorry for people that suffer for it for a while as I absolutely hate it. Tom PS - not had my day this year so dreading waking up every morning at the moment.
witch Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 I am an asthmatic who only developed hayfever a couple of years ago - today is definitely the worst day so far. None of the hayfever tablets work, and some make me wheeze!

mattx Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 Today is VERY bad. Yesterday I ended up on my bed with a wet towel over my face. [ The kids think its funny !! ] My nose is like a tap at the moment, even after the medication. Eyes not too bad, the Cromolux helps that. Its the nose that causing me the most problems at the moment. I have not been this bad for a few years. I can't have the injections that some people have as I am on beta blockers, so its a case of just having to try and limit what I can do. Was thinking of getting a mask - anyone tried the masks at all ?

steve Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 I've been feeling pretty bad for a week now. Always worse after a night on the beer. It must dilute the antihistamines :-) At work I have air con that filters the pollen and at home I have one of these Its almost like I'm jake in a cage for most of the summer - locked away for my own protection.

limbo Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 A quick tip I have discovered this year - instead of just going and buying one tablets from the supermarket or a high street chemist - go to a proper chemist and ask for unbranded antihistamine. From our local co-op chemist I can get 30 tablets for £2.99. I used to only take them when I had reallly bad days because it cost too much money to take them just in case, whereas now I can take them constantly which, again so the chemist advises, helps them work even better - kind of a cumulative affect. They are exactly the same tablets, but you are not funding the advertising campaign and fancy packaging. My worst days are usually the four days every summer when we are bailing at my in-laws farm - but then it is kind of sadistic of them / me to even consider helping with it! Curiously it often hails the end of the hayfever season for me - perhaps there is something to immersive therapy!!

mattx Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 Did my normal routine of pretending to be Ray Charles / Stevie Wonder and making my way to the bathroom this morning as my eyes had stuck together overnight... On the bike this morning, visor down the whole 13 miles to work - windows now FIRMLY Shut in the office - so another day of being miserable. Taken the normal dose of stuff which helps a little but not enough for me to notice... Its VERY high today the pollen count - I'm off in a mo to do a rain dance in the field. Anyone care to join me ?

Southwell Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 Zirtek are fantastic for hayfever relief, i also take them for my alergies with the cats! If your really bad then get some strong ones on prescription.
Andrew_C Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 Eyes a bit sore, but I have been taking Citirizene (SP?) for a couple of weeks now. As said above the cumulative effect really helps, and I get 3 months worth on a prescription.
