Cheeky question I know but has anybody got the select licenced vista business ISO? I have my key but cannot find the media anywhere and it would save me having to reorder the media for £2.00 and then about £47 delivery! Thanks Tom

I will try and post a report up of the installation then if thats any help to you? Tom
-
We are getting it installed next Thursday and Friday - if anybody wants to know anything about the installation then ask away and I can find out at the end of next week for you. Tom

We have just moved over at county (yesterday actually), from a sytem where staff were completely unfiltered to a system where they are filtered just as much as the kids. This has gone down very well indeed as you can imagine! The reason was one highlighted above, if nobody can access anything that they are not supposed to then nobody can moan about being accused of anything. Apparantly we have had several members of staff on several sites already moaning about not being able to access facebook Tom

Well I have my MacBook Pro and my MiniNote - you'll notice I'm using the MBP though. Tom

You should have taken your own advice from this morning - a hot brick and some spit wasn't it?

Well I'm here :-)

I've mentioned this to an admin but I will be arriving by car mid to late afternoon. I don't mind picking anybody up from the station at anytime if it's only a few miles away. Tom

It's on the conference schedule that one is going to be shown. Also, I shall of course be bringing mine. Only got it on Friday (unfortunately with vista - soon put XP back on!). I haven't really had the chance yet to use it in the mobile enviroment and due to my role it will be used as a portable note taking device, ideal for meetings, conferences etc. So far I am rather impressed with it, runs XP absolutely fine and only 1GB of memory at the moment. The keyboard is very very very nice to use and I can type on it as easily as a full sized one. The only concern that I had when ordering the MiniNote was the lack of an optical drive. This has yet to be a problem. Installed XP from an external DVD drive, and haven't needed it since. I would definately recommend the product. Tom

I have had SIMS running in a VM on a 64Bit 2003 setup and it wasn't very stable at all. I think it "will" run however it is still against all of capitas guidance to do so. Personally at the moment, untill such a time that they fully support it I wouldn't bother - I mean, we all know how much of a pain they can be trying to get support out of them for something that they actually do recommend! You're right, definitely no excuse now, I've just booked in :-) Tom

That sounds like something that could be very useful, any chance you could post a copy on here? Thanks Tom

Hmm this seems to be getting stranger - apparantly the site has been working ok all last week from home for our maths teacher but not from school (she only deceided to tell me this about 10 mins ago on the day that it is needed!). I have just remote accessed my home PC and tried it, and I cannot access it from there either, implying that the problem isn't local - but if you can access it then I don't know whats going on! Thanks again. Tom

Can somebody just help me and proove that the problem I am suffering isn't local! Can anybody get onto http://www.worldmathsday.com ? Thanks Tom

Can you access things like your IMAP mail from a windows client connected through your wireless network? In Lincolnshire they block things like itunes connections and imap mail apart from their own - so even with a wireless connection established on my iPhone, i can use the internet fine, but nothing specific like my mail, which still uses the edge connection. I have been redirecting my documents to Server A for a long while now. A new server was purchased, I have moved over all of the data on it, reshared all the shares etc, and all is working well - or so it would seem. I have changed the redirection in the group policy for the users concerned and it does not seem to be changing it over. User logs in, takes ages as it cannot find my documents (still looking for old location). Eventually it gives up and loads anyway - the new shares are fine and all is working correctly - apart from the redirection. Any ideas? Thanks Tom

I am trying to implement Disk Quotas on the drive that holds all of my student’s home areas. When I go into the quotas tab, I am able to set a quota on a particular student. What I would like to do is create an entry for group “students” – to which every member of the group would get a certain limit automatically imposed. Is this possible as in the search box I am unable to locate groups, only individual users. The operating system is Server 2003 SP1 - no R2 here. Thanks Tom

Subscription for Edugeek : Would you pay?
tscnmuk replied to contink's topic in Comments and Suggestions
I would pay - if only for the time and effort that all of the people running the site must invest. Using EduGeek has saved my back many times, from silly little problems that I just could not get my head around to complicated solutions to even more complicated questions. As far as taking money from cash strapped schools, is their anybody on here who wouldn't pay £5/£10 or even a little more personally, simply for the peace of mind that the site offers. Tom -
If you want to disable CD Burning all together, disable the ImapiService in services.msc This will stop all burning to disk for a particular machine. Tom

Although different brands I wouldn't be suprised if you have hit the nail on the head there. I just cleanly installed the PC, and installed the printer before doing ANYTHING else. Before using the supplied driver disk, the printer installation runs fine. As soon as it is on, it won't install. What a pain!!

I don't know if this is windows problem or a hardware problem but I have a certain type of machine that I am unable to install a local printer on. I have tried several different machines (all of the same type) and several different printers (all of different types) to no effect. The installation gets so far and then comes up with a "Cannot copy file" error which is cancelable but then the error repeats for about 30 different files before the installation gives up. I have tried the installation with the same result with both parellel and USB printers. However, a printer is mappable over the network wihout a problem. Any ideas? Tom

Somebody had to say it

That wouldn't suprise me - it's something i've wondered about for a while and never thought to find out :-)

When installing a windows service pack or hotfix, the extraction process extracts all of the files to a folder, usually on the C:\ drive. All of these folders are named such as, taking one from my own laptop "d77d0c684bbaf36eaacdfa08f8cd0c47". Is there any convention to these names as googling them never comes up with any results, or is it just a random name so that the files wont over right anything else? Not really affecting anything, but just curious really!! Tom

I just redirect the start menu to the "K:\" drive. Unused so it's fine for this purpose. In the drive mapping registry edit in the logon script I hide the drive from my computer. Even if they do double click the start menu and then click on up, they simply get to "My Computer". Tom
