"IT Office" ? Works for us..

Only the ICT Technical staff have a key to the office here. Not even the site manager has a key, unsure if this is "allowed" or not but it is just the way it works here. A lot of very expensive equipment and confidential data is kept in the office at all times.

Was afraid that would be the answer. As a thought, I suppose I could create an empy OU on my working domain called DESIGN or something, and then use that as the root of my new domain structure. This wouldn't effect the rest of the domain in anyway but would still offer all the OU/Object functionality that I require. Anything against doing this? Tom

We have actually looked into kusing some form of Linux as webfiltering as I have heard many good things about the opens ource content filters that are out there. Our current solution, provided by county but run and managed in house, is less than useless. That is where my knwoledge unfortunately stops though, products like DansGuardian. I have no idea about and as of yet, have not had the inclination to learn. I suppose it will just have to be a job for the April-August dead period. Does anybody have any idiots advice for DansGuardian? To bring this thread back to topic, a lot of webby type servers come preinstalled with different versions of linux so I suppose preinstallation on workstations is only the next logical step. Tom

Does anybody know of any software that can simulate active directory simply from a design point of view. I am looking at completely redesigning the active directory structure and would like to plan out what I am going to do. I know that I can do this either on Excel or using a good old fashioned pen and paper but software that could realistically insert OU's and all relevant objects within them in the same way that active directory does, would be ideal. Webman - From what I gather reading on here ( and tend to be very wrong so excuse me if I am ) your school uses predominately linux based clients? How do you find this to manage/support. I have always been very microsoft biased (not that I like them, but I just am). Also can I put a shout to anybody who happens to be running a similar setup in the Lincolnshire/Cambridgeshire area as I genuinely would like to see a system of this nature in action. Linux is often something I have contemplated but feel it is outside my knowledge by too much to sucesfully impliment in a working enviroment.

I'm not trying to say I don't like Linux webman, I actually quite like it, however (and yes, this is due to my own lack of knowledge), at the moment its just a toy to me. I know I will probabaly get pounced on now by linuxy people but please understand that I am not knocking it at all as an operating system. I actually run an Ubuntu box to play with as I do honestly want to further my knowledge. The only thing I would say about OEM's putting Linux on a machine from factory is that I can see people playing with it for half an hour before putting a dodgy copy of xp on. Tom

I don't really know what to think about this. Whereas it is a good idea, giving the user a choice of OS rather than having MS pushed upon them; MS is still the "standard" for what most people will be running at home/in the office so surely thats what should get taught? Tom

Just realised who has posted this topic 8) There is no way that you need the XP Client Firewall switched on mate. NETLinc provide a two-layered hardware firewall before the connection hits your site and on the newer routers (unsure whether you had been upgraded to 10MB last time we spoke) there is also a thin-firewall solution. Nothing out of the ordinary should be able to hit your local domain through the EMBC and should anything work its way in, there is no way it will be able to communicate back outside the network again. I know we have just spoken about this on the phone but the 10.37 range will be specific to your issue. Anywhere in the NETLinc IP Range that has split DHCP will be exactly the same. Tom

The latest "hide the van" trick around here is the colour. They have started using yellow renault vans and putting a speed camera symbal the size of a postage stamp (Perhaps a slight exageration there) somewhere on it, maybe underneath to comply with the signage rules.

I must admit to using the pringles tube method before, and it actually works pretty well. Makes the signal very very directional but have heard stories of nearly a miles worth of straight line signal.

Personally I don't like the idea of having a second "wasted" server to do this job. I would much rather have a NAS device backing up the MIS constantly and if the server running the MIS went down for anyreason, it wouldn't take very long to stuff it onto another server. Or even run the MIS data directly from a mirrored NAS. Can anybody help with an opinion of running from NAS that I can push onto SMT to get them to do it this way instead?

Ours is very definately off as well. As somebody previous to this mentioned; we also have a hardware firewall on the edge of our network and the LEA has one as well so theres not a lot of point in having the workstation firewall enabled. All it seems to do when turned on is complicate things.

@ ChrisH - Plenty here in Lincolnshire as well. And so far (touch wood) a clean licence for me at the moment. They are starting to appear everywhere and I have a 70 mile round trip everyday to work and tend to see on average 2 Scamera Vans at the side of the road as well.

As an add-on thought to my previous statement. When removing a students rights from their mailbox, I always found it benifical to change the user description to something that would alert me to the fact that it had been done. Lots of times scratching head why a user couldn't access their mailbox.

A type of "Sin Bin" system that we have used is to remove the ""self" rights on the user's mailbox. Go into the User using Active Directory on the Exchange Server itself. On the "Exchange Advanced" tab under mailbox rights, is a "self" option. If you just set that to deny all, the kid won't be able to access the mailbox at all, let alone send anymore messages.

An advantage to a proper IP camera would be the ability to easily view it's image from another PC within the school or even externally. This is obviously possible with a USB one but using a proper IP device makes this much easier.

For school we are obviously able to purchase Vista through the Select Licencing Agreement. However, I have started to get the inevitable questions from staff about where the best place to buy it personally would be. Has anybody found a copy of of Vista Ultimate for not a lot of money (high hopes or what ). It is fine being an upgrade copy but cannot be OEM. Thanks
