Does anybody have a prefered solution for an MIS Backup system. We basically require a complete mirror of the MIS system (which has not yet been implimented) so that should the serve containing the system fail, a secondary copy can be instantly activated. What is the easiest way to go about this? Thanks

No plan here either. I don't normally "do" ill so it's not so much a problem. However I am very much of the opinion that if I were to be ill, i'm ill and thats the end of it. The network can run itself pretty well, only users having non-critical problems and these can wait.

DNS is the reason for the removal of the AD role. The stupid thing won't replicate because of who knows what, for some reason we didn't realise for months (on top of our game or what ) but the last sucesfull replication was in november, the same time the motherboard died and was replaced. Something fishy going on...

I have an odd feeling that one of my servers has become self aware (terminator style). The long and short of it is that the server needs to be removed from hosting active directory. Using the obvious method of Manage My Server/add remove role etc - If you go through and tell the server it isn't the only domain controller in the domain, it kicks up an error saying "No other domain controlers can be found". However, if the box for "only domain controler left in the domain" is ticked the server comes up with the message "Other domain controllers found, server is unwilling to procede". Complete stuck here, tried running dcpromo in reverese with the exact same effect. Does this mean that the server is stuck on the domain?! Cannot remove it with/without network cable connected/after restart. Completetly stuck for ideas now. Thanks for any advice. Tom

That's jsut the way of it though isn't it. How many times have you spent a day or more working on something that makes very little or no difference to the end user. From an administration point of view it might be brilliant but as far as your users are concerned you've been doing nothing. I hate that one. Oh well. Tom

It's so quiet around here at the moment. Both my techies are off doing the usual printer maintainence, password resets and all the other stuff I can't be bothered to. Nothing much is planned due to budgets all being closed shortly. Is it unhealthy to spend 43 hours a day playing Solitare? Alternitively my white car is now brown. Could give that a wash, but need to come up with a work related reason for doing so - anyone? Tom

I have been tempted by offering this solution several times. However, if one of them really screws things up making the system unusable, don't you find they go running straight to the SMT who eventually will have you ending up doing the job anyway? Just a thought. Tom

That's probabaly a little extream but I have been there and done that myself. The most frustrating thing in the world when your policies aren't applying correctly but there appears to be no reason for it. Good luck and I hope you find the solution before having to reimage them all. Tom

There is a local security policy somewhere to deny them the ability to remove the computer from the domain. Can't find it for the life of me at the moment but this is how I worked around the problem.

We have all IP's apart from my machine and the proxy blocked on all external communication. This is the best way of doing it in my opinion, fairly bulletproof. Unless they are accessing the internet through the proxy, then they are not accesing the internet at all. Tom

I think what he is trying to say is that when they have got connected at home, the laptop will no longer connect to the school network properly? I may have misunderstood it though. Tom

Know this isn't really a help but we had a teacher ages ago that couldn't get his school laptop to connect to his home wireless without removing it from the domain, which as a local user he at the time had the right to do. 2 or three mornings a week he would bring his laptop up to me to have it rejoined to the domain. Don't we all just love teachers Not sure about the BT Home Hub but I know that some of the NTL Cable connections use a proxy server so this could be the problem? If it is just write a bit of script to change the proxy when he is at home to whatever it needs to be. Tom

Been there myself with the P4 four pin connector. Missed it out and spent an age working out why the macine wouldn't boot. Oh well, like you said, I suppose we all must have these moments. Tom

Just had a horrible thought - although may be completely irrelevant. You mentioned Windows Updates, however, when I said that MS .NET Frameworks were released automatically I was refering to the updated Microsoft Update. This shouldn't present a problem but just a really silly point if you are not getting them downloaded automatically using Windows Updates this could be the reason. Tom
