This is definitely possible - in the past I have used an SQL table to combine data from the MIS and AD to identify where accounts need to be created (and then create them), to allow staff to change student passwords, to set permissions on folders etc. I used Visual Basic as the basis, this can access the various data sources and then run DOS commands / PowerShell commands / Batch files etc.

You are absolutely right - the DfE it is a massive overhead that someone ultimately has to fund. the JobsInSchools.org model is relatively effective in terms of funding the infrastructure, but it still relies on volunteers to maintain it and code it. But by far the biggest cost would be marketing. There is so much money thrown at marketing by the commerical job boards that it is really hard to make a dent. Over 15% of schools nationally are involved in our particular project which is not an insignificant number - but is it still really hard to get traction. Ultimately I suspect the DfE will never get this off the ground becuase it would probably mean putting companies like TES and eTeach out of business completely - which I cannot see them wanting to do.

Hi elsigee40 You can absolutely search for IT roles without going by LA. All you need to do is put your postcode into the relevant search box and then the distance. This will then filter all the jobs for you and you can select the category IT / Data. You can then save that search so it emails you jobs as they are posted so you do not need to keep going to the site to check for new posts (which has to be the ultimate goal surely?) That said, we always welcome feedback. Nobody is making any money out of the site at all, and never will so any help is gratefully recieved. The feedback from schools is generally positive because of how easy it is to post a vacancy, how easy it is to embed those on your school website so you do not have to update in more than one place and of course the fact it is completely free. It also makes use of twitter and is running parallel with the DfE's Schools Buying Strategy by using collaboration through local SBM networks. Perhaps worth a second look?

The rather ropey looking website is just an entry point, it looks like that company is just a broker rather than the people that actually provide the training materials. I took a gamble on a similar AmazonLocal deal a couple of weeks ago from the same company - not VMware though. Essentially it gives you access to a load of online lessons in the form of powerpoint style lessons. You click through either reading the information or listening to the commentary - there is then a test at the end for you to complete and if you score highly enough then you get a certificate to print to say you have mastered that module. It is completely hands off from the company, and you can see that it is cheap because now they have developed the content there is no additional cost to them whether 10 people are studying it or 1000 so selling access cheaply might get them the odd £100 here and there that otherwise might not have come their way. But if you are not good at learning by reading and listening, then avoid it.

We already do this, currently just for our Sixth Form as phase 1. I have interpreted it like this: Student owned machines do not have access to the BGfL connection or any associated equipment. They connect to a different wirless network which grants access to a closed VPN that has no access to the internet directly. It does provide access to a desktop running as a proxy server. The agreement says that only School owned devices can connect to the internet connection, and the proxy server is school owned and therefore it is within the rules in the same way that a TS machine would be.

We had a visitor from a large school in Japan a couple of years ago, I asked him how many computers they had, expecting the answer to be thousands and so his response of "5" was a bit of a shock. At the school all the students just use their own mobile phones with no domain or infrastructure of any kind. Personally I see the future being cloud based, but the school will be hosting the cloud, with something resembling a domain at the heart of it. All access to the services provided by the school (email, online storage etc.) will be through the internet (which will be via filtered wifi in school) on student owned devices so that the experience at home is identical to the experience in school (apart from the lack of an internet filter at home - or not if schools offered it at a service) And I think this is probably only three or four years away from happening.

Essentially all you do is turn off anonymous browsing so that visitors have to log in, select AD as the authentication type and then set permissions on the various folders that make up your website. If you wanted to direct people based on their credentials then it is slightly more difficult, but possible. You could just have two different URLs that each only allow certain people to have access or if you wanted it to be a bit more complex then you could use some asp script and the authenticated user server variable. The server would need access to both domains, through a trust perhaps?

If you are using IIS on a server within the domain then you should be able to just use the built in tools. Do you want the content to be unique to each person logging in - or is it just a question of restricting access and everyone has the same content?

It is a squid box, relatively standard setup - the majority of the work is done by the wireless network, the DHCP server, the radius box and the switches to route everything in the right way.

Hey Chr1s - we have got a transparent proxy setup here if you wanted to pop over and see it in the New Year. One SID setup on our wireless specifically for BYOD which takes you to a separate DHCP server on an internal VLAN with a transparent proxy that then points to the BGfL proxy. No need for BGfL to need to do anything and none of the devices can see anything of the rest of the network. We have then setup a section of our VLE where students can register the MAC address of their device which gets entered into a radius server for authentication onto the SID. No need for intervention from us for them to gain connectivity, but secure. We went down this route because it also works with older Android and Kindle devices that do not support proxies at all.

I run several different collaborative forums for non-profit school based groups using some software I wrote myself, mainly SBM's and Governors. I think it can do all the things you are asking for, although it does depend on what you mean by large attachments. I can probably offer this as a managed service to you for a minimal cost to cover my hosting / bandwidth costs etc. It does support adding sponsors which may be of interest to help you cover any costs (many of the groups I support now make four and five digit profits out of using the service) PM me if you are interested - it will certainly take all the pain out of setting it up and running it.

It is simpler to have two tables - one that has all the asset information and one that has each instance of it being scanned. Then you write into the main asset information the latest date an item was scanned (either as it happens or via a query afterwards). And rather than trying to track whether something was done in 2012 or not, it is easier if you then just produce a list of all the assets sorted by the date in ascending order and work your way down the list. Doing it this way will let you pick it up whenever you have downtime and work your way down the list until you can see that the dates are in or around 12 months.

I think it varies for different LA's this time around - I am pretty sure Birmingham and Worcestershire are different for example. EDIT: Just checked and Birmingham is w/c 22nd October where Worcestershire is w/c 29th October

I might be wrong, but I think one of the restrictions of SQL express over the full version(s) is that there is no network access. It was released primarily to sit underneath a website where all that needs to access it is a local IIS install - presumably to combat the increasing use of MySQL for this purpose.

1. Something like Virgin Media's Big Red Internet could potentially offer a cost saving, it can be managed but they do not, as far as I know, do filtering so this would be an additional cost on top. 2. I think it can be arranged - but if you are moving to something like progresso then it is not going to be locally in school anyway. 3. Link2ICT and the BGfL are not quite the same organisation, although very closely linked, so potentially nothing but it would be worth reflecting on what you currently subscribe to - do you, for example, use remote backup or web hosting? I think in reality you will probably not gain a huge cost saving because you would have to do a lot of the co-ordinating that naturally happens accross the services yourself, and you could end up with it not being clear whose responsiblity different things are when they stop working. I would find it easier to justify a move based on the suitablity of the service rather than on cost alone because you cannot really compare like for like easily.
