Pointless Question of the Week #5

Sorry about the delay in writing this week's PQOTW (I know many of you have lost sleep as a result) but I have been away on a residential trip with the school for the past week.

 

Every year we take 44 eleven year olds to Whitby to show them what hills and sandy beaches are like (both of which are quite rare here in Suffolk). I love Whitby and could happily see myself spending a happy life time there. Which brings me to this week's question:

 

Where in the world is your spiritual home?

Wait I thought everyone around here are IT techs or along those lines. You mean they let you out the office! Did you find some dirt on a Teachers or heads laptop? How did you pull that one off.

I went on the "Whitby Trip" before I was employed by the school - and so I am considered one of the experienced members of staff that go on the trip. Also, the person who organises it happens to be my Mum. I guess I'm just lucky.

 

Although my mobile phone was used quite a lot on the trip between my technician and I. I couldn't escape!

If you don't know where that is, keep going south-west, once you fall off a cliff into the Atlantic, you've gone too far; but only just!

You see them all over the place stuffing up the roads, towing caravans, often with hopelessly underpowered cars, wearing flat caps & smoking pipes. :sad4:

My manager has been trying to get me to go on a residential trip. I don't think it would be practical though, as I'm the only IT tech in the school.

Honest truth, I don't know. I've travelled a little and but haven't seen anywhere where I'd want to spend my days although Sweden came close.

 

Canada and Australia appeal massively to me but I've never been to either so it'd probably turn out that I'd end up hating them

I have been at current school 5 years and have been on over 5 residentail trips 2weekends, and 3 week long trips to Europe.

A place called Ambleside in the lakes. Awesome!

 

I get away on residentials all the time. In 2005 I was in Copenhagen, last year I was in France and this year we're going to Berlin. It's with something called the summer school. Dunno if any of you guys do it.

I've done 3 trips; one to France & two to Spain.

 

I doubt I'll ever do it again, certainly not if I don't get more assurance of support from the school. Don't get me wrong, I HATE the current "don't do anything in case it goes wrong" culture. However, the kids here cr@pped on the staff on each of the trips.

 

France. One child either a) missed the last bus out to his host family, b) slept past his stop, or c) got on the wrong bus. He told 3 members of staff a different story, and spent the night in a bus stop while 6 staff and the police looked for him. One other child hit by a car, not his fault in this case!

 

Spain 1. 4 kids sent home early after deceiving host families about a birthday party and staying out all night in a hostile town. There had been one mugging, and considerable "baiting" from the locals.

 

Spain 2. End of university party involving our host school, one child unconscious within 30 mins due to an alcohol overdose, paramedics called. A few of our kids returned to the party, and we were dragged out of our hotel at 03:00 to go back for them.

Belgium. Beer, chips & chocolate. The Belgians love the English, aren't sure about the Dutch, hate the Germans, and don't even regard the French as human.

near the sea with cliffs and dramatic coastline but flat sandy beaches as well...

 

i've been on 2 residential trips with my current school on the proviso that i take pics...both times have been activity trips...so have been ziplining, skiing, climbed round adventure courses...got another one coming up in june! no way i'm doing the trapeze this time!
