superatticman Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Hi For the last 10 years we've bought Sanyo branded projectors. I've been informed by another IT related employee at our school that Sanyo are going to be pulling out of the market as far as projectors go. Is this true? If so, whilst these days a number of brands are 'much of a muchness', what brands are currently the most popular and value for money when it comes to projectors? We've been recommended Epson by one of our resellers. Any reason NOT to purchase them? Thanks for reading.
K.C.Leblanc Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Have you checked that the throw distances of the Epsons are similar to those of the Sanyos?
Hedghog Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 +1 for checking the throw of the projectors. I fell into that trap, some of my interactive boards are not interactive anymore (well until we get the projector mount moved)
MYK-IT Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Use Projectors from ProjectorPoint - LCD and DLP Projectors to Buy or Hire for checking throw distances/screen size. We ended replacing all our Sanyos with the Casio XJ-A140s.
ToyHeartsFan Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 I haven't heard anything about Sanyo pulling out of projectors but being a school that uses Promethean boards we have a lot of them. The older Sanyos have worked ok but they were never really bright enough, 2 out of 3 of the old XP50's we have in our halls have died despite not being used enough to require a lamp change and we have had problems with 3 out of 4 Sanyos from the last batch we purchased. I purchased a number of the Casios M150s and so far I'm very happy with them. What ever you pick as a replacement remember the lens is on the opposite side on a Sanyo to almost all other makes so even if the throw distance is ok you might need to move the pole.
JJonas Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Agree with short throw being the way, but we have three Hitachi short throw projectors on site. Two of them have had failures with the gearing on the doors and had to be repaired under warranty.
Oaktech Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 thats a shame... ours get a hammering and have been fine, including an impatient member of staff getting on a chair, shutting the mirror manually and turning it off at the wall...
newpersn Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Epsons we are using here. Few of ours got 3 Years Warrenty.
MattHarwood Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Using NECs here. Very few problems, though the lamp life doesn't seem amazing to me (have little to compare to though). Reasonable pricing!
pooley Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 We use Epson here, 3 year no quibble warrenty, fitler full of gunk and lamp blown, no worries they will change it
Marc-Engineer Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Epson now for education have a 5 year warrenty and on site too, i can not recomend them highly enough never had a problem and i have fitted hundreds, i can honestly say out of all the makes i get to repair i see less broken Epsons than any other make and in my area there are thousands in schools. Next best come Hitachi and NEC, but please NEVER fit a DLP (of any make) machine in a school they are not up to it. Marc Projector Engineer 1
glennda Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 +1 for the casio models - Cost over its life is the best and the quality of the images is pretty good. Also with the optics it has I've not had a room that i couldn't fit a Casio to the existing mount (one room i lost 2 inches off the screen width) but apart from that they are brilliant.
Busybub Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Have to agree with Marc re DLP. Never had a trouble free one, constantly getting flickering pictures due to some sort of contamination. Stick with LCD. Also have to agree with Epson, Hitachi and NEC. Have many of each. Only one I had a problem with was a DLP Epson! Have one good experience with Casio, but relatively unproven compared to the others which have been around for years. Optoma are pants, Smart Unifi are worse (both DLP) - avoid like the plague.
glennda Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Have one good experience with Casio, but relatively unproven compared to the others which have been around for years. But with a 5 year warranty and no need to change bulbs they are worth the punt. I've got over 40 now and only had a problem with 1 which was replaced.
newpersn Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 On that saying Marc All of our DLPs are fading out slowly. I thing we have only 5 left. Epsons are the easiest to clean as its only a filter on the bottem or side of the projector. All our epsons are LCD now
K.C.Leblanc Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 We've got lots of NECs here, our biggest issue with them is the amount of abuse we give them the actual projector doesn't seem to outlass it's first lamp. This is what we've found with the older VT56s. We're now mostly onto MP310 and a newer one. Will have to see how well they last.
RTFM Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 But with a 5 year warranty and no need to change bulbs they are worth the punt. I've got over 40 now and only had a problem with 1 which was replaced. Some of our Casio's are getting on for 2 years old now. We are similar to @glennda and have approx 30 of the Casio's, we had to send one back which was replaced within a couple of days and that's it. The throw distance is also something which just makes them great, we've not had any throw issues with them.
bossman Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 I too have Casio's around the school and they are just fantastic so the teachers say, I also know that Benq have released laser projectors with 20,000 hours life so these may be worth having a look into (not literally as they may burn you eyes out hehe!)
Marc-Engineer Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 (edited) Morning Busybub, actually you may have the name wrong Epson have never made a DLP even though i have seen links to their models if you google it but they dont and never have done one. Yes casio is an option but they are expencive and they dont have the quality of image, if you stick any of the casio range side by side with any proper projector Epson,NEC,Hitachi etc. you will see how much lower the quality of the casio image is, bit like a 405line TV to and HD OLED. Andrew_C Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 Wherever I get a chance, I'm having some Unistrut fitted to the ceiling to allow future replacement projectors to be moved forwards/backwards a bit. I hope this will reduce the problems with different throw projectors. It isn't normally a problem, unless some numpty fitted a projector at one extreme of zoom or the other.
SimpleSi Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 Throw distance is the big one if you've lots of them Epsons with 3yr guarantee are great Casios are great but we still don't know if they will do the full 5 years yet Simon
Marc-Engineer Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 Just a note Epson are now 5 year cover. Marc Projector Engineer
sjatkn Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 My installer told me about Sanyo pulling out of the projector market. It is a pitty as he used them a lot for larger venues as they had interchangeable lenses. At the moment he is looking at the alternatives for our possible installs in the drama studio and hall.
