Millgate Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 Can't believe it. I was watching him yesterday on Football Focus. Such sad news. The world of football has lost a Legend RIP Speedy

rad Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 Why... sometimes people need help, I'd admit, us guys find it harder to admit we have a problem/issue compared to women. Guys, if you are not thinking straight, get help... 1
HarryMonkey Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 RIP Gary. The world of football has lost a great man.
synaesthesia Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 I don't know or care for Football, I know of this mans name and that's about as far as it goes. Regardless, it's a shame he saw fit to take his own life and I agree with what was said earlier - should anyone have problems of any nature, it's always a good idea to speak to someone. RIP Gary.
mrbios Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 I grew up watching Gary play for leeds, along with being half welsh so having an interest in his international exploits. Watching the BBC interview with robbie savage today i welled up myself Such a sad loss for football, he was a proper gentlemen of the game. RIP
garethEds Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 I read about this today firstly on Twitter whilst walking around Cardiff. Shocking. Absolutely shocking. It's difficult to understand what drives a person to take their own lives. I guess we will never find out. An amazing footballer who was turning the Welsh international team around. His record speaks for itself. I listened to Radio Wales on the way home this evening - there was a special programme on. Upsetting to listen to people talking about him with the sense of belief. I've just watched the Robbie Savage interview on the BBC website - brought a tear to my eye. RIP Gary Speed. Gareth
JoeBloggs Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 Huge huge loss. Total shock. Grew up watching him play for Leeds. RIP
captaincharisma Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 I couldn't believe it when it came up on the news, such a model pro. Never caught up in the fame part of football, if he did take his own life then I would be very shocked but I suppose you never know what is going on in peoples lives. RIP Gary Speed
DT2 Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 Without seeming harsh, all I've heard all weekend is RIP Gary Speed, tributes to Gary Speed. What about the wife and two kids he left? As good a guy as he was, he is also a selfish plick for doing that to his family. [/rant] Flame away...... DT 1
X-13 Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 Guys, if you are not thinking straight, get help... If you're not thinking straight, you don't realise you're not thinking straight. Even if it's pointed out, you don't accept it.

The one thing that troubles me is that he did this in his home, presumably with a very good chance his kids could have been the ones to find him.
captaincharisma Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 That is supposed to be the hardest thing, admitting you have a problem in the first place.
X-13 Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 That is supposed to be the hardest thing, admitting you have a problem in the first place. Sometimes a problem is only a problem to other people. "I said I was an addict. I didn't say I had a problem. I pay my bills, I make my meals. I function." 1
DT2 Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 Unfortunately suicide is a selfish act in many ways. The one thing that troubles me is that he did this in his home, presumably with a very good chance his kids could have been the ones to find him. Which makes it all the more selfish a thing to do. I remember my mate at school found his dad swinging from the stairs one afternoon, he was never the same afterwards. Not something a kid should ever see. DT
witch Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 When you are in the state of mind where suicide seems to be your only option, I'm not sure you can even comprehend the word 'selfish' anymore - you just want everything to stop. So I don't think that you can label a suicide. To us, on the outside, it looks different to the way it does when you are thinking and feeling that way
Hightower Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 But at the same time, if you are of the frame of mind to be contemplating taking your own life, I don't think it's likely your family is at the forefront of those thoughts - otherwise he wouldn't have taken his own life. Sometime's it's impossible to see what is going through somebodies head, and it can be disguised quite easily. The hardest part for family is that a person has ended their life, and they couldn't see any warning signs as to why it happened - that's got to be the hardest part to take. All I know is, the man will be sorely missed in the football world (the world that I knew of him), and I hope he has now found peace. RIP Gary

So I don't think that you can label a suicide. To us, on the outside, it looks different to the way it does when you are thinking and feeling that way It really depends on the situation. Some suicides are driven by mental illness and the like, which basically we know so little about it is embarrassing, and then there are those who take it as an easy way out (such as a banker jumping out of a window when they lose billions of dollars etc...). The latter is selfish, the prior is not. And of course, there is a nice big grey area in the middle. With this poor man and his family, all I will say is RIP and I hope his family get through this ok.

Now I doubt this is something he chose quickly, so even during that interview on TV it was in his mind. Maybe not immediate (perhaps something later that day triggered it) but chances are he had gone through what he would do in his mind already. So to hang yourself in your own home with (speculation obviously) your wife and children asleep is selfish regardless of the act. Depending on how/where there is a chance it also wasn't instant, so what happens then if his family find him but can't do anything to save him?

We don't know what happened in his head to cause this. It could've been something medical that messed up his brain suddenly - it has been known to happen. We just don't know. 1
elsiegee40 Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 This came as a complete shock and I feel incredibly sad for his family. I can't help thinking that this will test the press on their ethics with reporting even more than the Levinson Enquiry.

Precisely, we don't know, so I am commenting on the information given to me and also using personal experience. I will wholeheartedly change my opinion if new facts come to light
X-13 Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 Opinions and theories aside, I think we can all agree that this was unexpected. He was 42 and seemed happy the day before. 1
