I too stopped wearing ties because they always got dirty and ruined.

Only problem at this place with going open collar is that we have name badges on dangly things to wear. they look damn silly without a tie on.

 

Open the collar further and have it as a Medallion

 

 

And for the people saying ties get dirty and ruined, then the easiest solution is to stop doing that sort of work and spend more time at your desk drinking coffee. Everyone probably thinks thats all you do anyway.

Shirts and ties for us, apart from holidays when scruffy gear is allowed. Plea to SMT to wear casual gear such as polo shirts went unheard fell on deaf ears.

I'd rather be known for being professional from my actions and the work I do than present a false image, as happens a lot in IT. I'm not saying those on here do it (fact you post here states you're more professional than most) but in my previous job we had some "professional" analysts who did the same job as me, wore suits, knew how to talk about it but couldn't do any of the work without one of us scruffs helping them every step of the way.

 

Clothing means nothing, suit would put me off rather than make me think someone knows what they're doing and mostly because of those bad past experiences of suited IT folks :-|

I wear a suit here - its surprising how many people have mentioned not liking / don't wear a suit. I must say though Im not afraid to get my hands dirty and the dry cleaning bills cost me a fortune. The technician here wears a shirt and tie and I think thats good as the professional look is important.

 

I have had polo shirts printed with school logo for both me and the technician which we can get changed into if necessary during the day.

Jeans & T-Shirt here.. We do have the offical work polo shirts but they never seen to get worn...

Obviously we dont wear ties

I wear trousers and smart top - don't wear a skirt as can be awkward crawling under desks!

Only rule in both schools is no jeans or sports wear

During term-time, it is shirt and tie (actually, if I'm being honest, it's a suit) - holiday time and Inset are jeans days. When I am doing work for which smart dress isn't appropriate, I will dress accordingly although typically this sort of work is done outside of term anyway.

 

A lot of it depends on the age / views of your colleagues, however I found some people here taking me far more seriously when I went from shirt/tie to suit/tie - I can only imagine how they would have treated me if I was wearing combats!!

 

It is always the full suit if I have externals coming in or meetings with SMT.

i'm a 'woman tech' and tend to wear smart top & smart trousers, occasionally a skirt if i know i've not got any crawling around to do...also occasionally a pair of smart jeans or cargos...in the summer i get away with 3/4 length trousers and sandals a lot my ict suite (where i work) is far too hot for shoes in the summer, have never worn a suit here - its only a primary school and i think i'd scare the kids if i wore a suit

Start the day off (usually) with a shirt and tie, as the day progresses the tie tends to come off and I'll go open collar.
