Shirts n ties OR T-shirts

Just want a quick poll on this,

 

When i started working in a school Shirts n ties had to be worn, then

I had a new manager who pushed for logo T-shirts, then another change at the top put us back into Shirts n ties.

 

Now I am the manager and I have kept the Shirt N Tie's because I feel its more professional.

 

What’s you opinions….

Ties aren't practical when you're grovelling about under desks.

I personally think shirts and ties looks a bit daft on technical staff when they're crawling around under desks or leaning over computer equipment the just get in the way.

 

I wear a short sleeved shirt at work but would prefer just to wear plain dark t-shirts instead. I doubt anyone would bat an eyelid either.

 

If I was hiring in an I.T. firm and they turned up in shirts and ties I'd assume they were managers who knew sweet FA about the technical side :-D

I agree with Geoff. I haven't worn a tie in a while now. Plus it takes less time in the morning if I don't have to put one of those on, haha.

I wear a shirt and tie. I tuck my tie in or remove it if needed. If i'm laying cable, drilling and generally getting mucky - I will change into appropriate clothing!

 

I think it looks more professional, but agree that it is sometimes not practicable.

I too go with a casual top, the ties just get in the way, dropping into PCs when I lean over them, getting hooked on stuff, the shirts get all mucky when I am laying cabling or drilling in the ceiling to mount a projector.

 

Likewise I tend to wear combats or some other strong trousers (not jeans), because I have torn far too many decent pairs of trousers on sticky out metal things over the years. I just dont find shirt/tie/trousers all that much good in a practical role

We wear shirts - no ties and smart trowsers and shoes but if we are doing something dirty then we come in jeans and a t-shirt. Might try and ask for logo'd polo shirts. what trowsers do you all wear with logo'd polo shirts?? Smart or jeans?

Smart casual is the order of the day although as long as we aren't in really nasty grunge stuff (ripped jeans etc) then we are OK. Ties a def no no. Don't want the little monkies using me as a rope swing. Combats and the like are a must as then I have enough pockets and deep enough pockets to carry everything!

During the holidays we wear any thing we like, i must admit i prefered polo shirt and combat's but i have chance of going back to them now i have don the suite. Thinking about polo shirts for the rest of the team.

On side note if your school provides a logo'd shirt aka a uniform then you allowed a tax reduction unless the school provide washing machine, powder etc for it to be clened.

I would definantly have to agree that shirt and tie looks proffesional. But I think ties get in the way and get dirty really easily. How professional would a technician with a dirty tie and shirt look not very proffesional at all I would say.

Personally, I think it is down to the image that you would like to project. If you want to give the impression that you are professional, then shirt and tie is the way to go. If you want to wear your best Star Trek or Oasis tee shirt along with the baggy jeans then.........

Never been one to care about my image , I prefer people to judge me by my actions rather than my dresscode. I am happy knowing that people come to me out of respect for knowing that I can help them with their problem rather than because I wear a tie and look all pretty

 

(though it should also be said that I am not really bothered about being viewed as a professional, I am what I am..a nerd who tinkers with computers, I'm happy with that definition )

Start the day off (usually) with a shirt and tie, as the day progresses the tie tends to come off and I'll go open collar.

 

If I have any meetings or important 'professional looking stuff to do then the tie goes back on.

 

Never wear a suit, don't own one anymore.

 

Only problem at this place with going open collar is that we have name badges on dangly things to wear. they look damn silly without a tie on.

True.. might be slightly better than the string vest option mentioned on the previous page though
