Sad to see you got problems with friends computer Alastair. I tried the server the video card is not working properly hoping its just he hard drives but monitor showing no signal. I am not a mac fan admire from a far. I have been brainwashed at an early age that windows is the best operating system. However I have started to branch out to linux which I find more creative than windows. However Apple macs maybe something that performs and looks gr8 but I am a programmer don't need things to look gr8 just perform I sticking with ubuntu and windows . Gotta say off the subject of macs Vista is a waste of space after a couple of service packs I might change my mind.

We Need a cooling system badly our 7 servers currently reach a warm 45 deg C and its not in the full swing of summer yet. Our reciliant servers have not given up the ghost yet. Hopefully they are still working by time we get air conditioning should be getting that in 2 years maximum. I hope its sooner than that, dont want the new dell server to be a waste of money already had tasks fail because of the warmth in the server room.

Wifi is killer I read the facts and believe them to be true. Does that make it realistic or pessimisti. I believe it could be serious because the way we are going is pushing wifi out everywhere. In schools this could be dangerous kids are constantly in the range of wifi for most of there lives. Just in case you forgot majority of kids are in schools for 6 years and majority of schools push kids towards computers. Tell me what u think, hilarious link eduabncs.

To go further on this point. Have whoever is responsible check the school insurance policy. Chances are you're not insured above head height. Thats a very interesting point Geoff I will check the company policy. I was also curious do you have any information on hoovers which are useful for cleaning projectors. A mini hoover you know that is tried and tested by people in schools would be very helpful. I think because we have atleast 50 projectors and thats not even a joke dont have time to clean them all that easily. Your help would be much appreciated.

Well Bat I can add Loads more to that list, I currently work at a school and I am part of the network support team. We do anything from fixing projectors which are damaged, to helping setting up whiteboards which were not installed correctly by the manafacturers to making sure websites not managed by us are responding. I would have to say that IT technicians, in the public sector are called above and beyond there duties aswell as there job description. This is apparent everywhere in a variety of jobs, I just deal with it take it on the chin. My chin is getting very sore at the moment. A rule of thumb anything that requires 99% common sense and 1% technical skill falls into our category.

Well gotta say your schools must have gr8 students at my school no way the students will get laptops unless u want a graveyard of laptops. We currently have both Dell Latitude d520's and d510's for our school but these are never ever given to students, only staff get our laptops. I dont think students can be trusted with computers let alone laptops which some of them refer to a mobile movable computer. That's what the students believe laptops are.

I would definantly have to agree that shirt and tie looks proffesional. But I think ties get in the way and get dirty really easily. How professional would a technician with a dirty tie and shirt look not very proffesional at all I would say.

Life On Mars for me captures the essence of television. Has a variety of comedy and action, aswell as diverse acting from characters I have previously seen in other series. I think it attracts a range of audiences , the 70's look good from where I am standing. I now know what life was like before the technology we all rely on to live our lives. Would be a good experience to use no technology but gotta have my technology so dependant on it. We had a similar problem with vbscripts. I would say test Case "prn1" instead of Case "PRN1" This should help you however I would also try testing the script to make sure it is getting to that line. A simple test by replacing declared variables with test code. For example strShortName = "prn1" try this in places where variables are passed to identify if there is a error in your code. But looks fine to me.

I would agree with PiqueABoo storing passwords is a security risk and is not standard practice. Also having this information can cause problems with teachers. Teachers or any member of staff dont like to know another person has their password, subsequently they will ask you when they forget which can be tideous exercise to perform for members of staff regularly. In the school I am currently a junior technician and passwords are not stored, but when a use forgets his or her password. A password change is forced out to alter the current password for the user. To me this seems like a more efficient way to handle passwords. We only know staff passwords when making configurations for laptops and workstations for mapping drives locally to that specific machine. This is because we have been made to enforce that passwords change monthly from a new directive, this is a right pain since users cannot remember there passwords.

Hi Tarqel I downloaded windows defender and got sophos from the school I work at I am currently a junior technician there. I am yet to get both spyboy and spywareblaster these will be downloaded when I next use my computer aswell as downloading various updates. Thanx for the tips tarqel the key words are sensible internet use. I believe I have been sensible however got very relaxed and downloaded convertion software from the internet and did not scan the software properly. I have learnt and this wont happen again. Not having a computer is like not having your hands you miss them but life goes on. This Post has been sucessfully completed.

Daveyboy you have got right the idea we all wish this was possible. I would say complete control on what software was installed on the network and not just any old piece of software you can get out of a cereal box. If it was me would have to install IBM blade servers and jack pcs with no kids hold on thats the perfect world. But on a serious note I would say teachers need training and we need to be able to do our job without disruption and constant conflict with staff.
