Here we go then...

Let's be having your top server names... and to start us off, here's my current set.

Zorro - File server. Can't remember why but no, it's not a blade server!

Binka - AD PDC named after the fat cat in the cartoon...

Carmen - Print server 'cause network printing is a tragedy!

Pandora - Email, You open the box and all the evils of the world fly out...

Cerberus - Firewall, the three headed dog guarding the entrance to the afterlife!

Shrek - Management server, because it's a mess!

BadaBing - DC/Backups From my favourite TV show Sopranos - where all the wiseguys go to hang out!

A couple more just have boring names - now I've shown you mine so you show me yours... :mrgreen:

Palladium and Cadmium - DCs / profiles / MOM / SMS / RIS

Platinum - File Server, Application Server

Titanium - Print Server and Successmaker

Proxy - Content filtering, mail filtering, firewall log server (and backup content filtering DB)

Magneto - Admin server (SIMS.net, FMS, Payrole, admin staff file server)

Iridium - First Class (email / VLE)

Silver - Installs

Uranium - Web Server, Application Server

Alice - Library Server, Application Server

QCA - KS3 Tests Pilot Server

and soon to get sorted will be another Application Server (technetium?).

The problem we have is that a number of applications that departments have purchased are the networked versions ... and they very rarely work on the same box as something else ... so we setup a test box with the offending article ... then try it with a few other things ... see what works together and hope for the best.

So many apps like their own version of things ... we have stuff on PHP that wants a mysql backend, stuff that want postgresql, and then stuff that wants apache of a particular version, or IIS but hates running on a box with MSDE or M$SQL ...

I try and make sure that we always get a test copy first ... and that we trial things before a new scheme of work is bought / written.

I like to have exciting names:

* SVR1 - DC/DNS/DHCP/RIS/File Server

* SVR2 - DC/DNS/File Server

* SVR3 - Exchange/Print Server/WSUS/Sophos

* SVR4 - ISA/File Server

* SVRTS1 -> SVRTS6 - Citrix Servers

* AD-2000-02103 - Admin Server (Named by County types - Active Directory, 2000 Server, District and School Number 02103)

* PreAbXS - SQL (Primarily for Nedap PreAbXS database and associated software)

* Voicemail - Guess what this is for! :p

* DEBIAN-02 - My second Debian Linux test server

My switches, SAN devices, tape library, etc. also have equally dull names but at least they're not too difficult to spell ;)

Hmm I thought RIS and DHCP didnt play nicely on the same box? Was certainly the case when I tried.

I have an exciting naming scheme

FMDC1 - DC/File server/DNS

FMDC2- DC/RIS/DNS

I did have a moment of creative thought with the new Mail server though...

PostOffice - Exchange/DHCP/Web Server

FMProxy- Censornet - Proxy/Filter and Firewall

@ChrisH: I'm sure I read that RIS and DHCP work best on the same box. I'm sure that it's entirely possible that MS have written contradictary advice on the subject.

I know I lumped both DCs together, but it actually breaks down into ...

Palladium - DC/DHCP/DNS/

Cadmium - DC/DNS/RIS/MOM/SMS

Palladium is obviously the god of all machines in the building.

I wanted to call it Tony to reflect this but I don't think Stephen would have agreed.
