Anyone use an iPad or iPod touch as technicians tool?

Hi guys,

 

As the title says was wondering if any ict technicians or network managers use iPod touch's or iPad's as a technical tool to help solve issues.

 

Came across an interesting thread about using an iPod touch on a mitel phone system for VoIP calling. It got me thinking what other uses do people use them for?

 

What apps?

What you have set up to work on them?

 

They strike me as a great mobile device for remoting onto a server quickly or changing a password, logging a call in spiceworks etc.

 

What do you guys use them for?

no but i will soon be using me Touchpad to keep me in the loop with helpdesk stuff etc when i get around to taking it to work.

Not yet, but I'm considering trying to get a couple of tablets of some form for myself and my tech, so that we can easily do things like password resets when we are out and about, rather than having to find a desktop to log in to, to RDP into a server.

Um, the iPad doesn't fit in your pocket, I find it just as easy to log onto a pc, then remote back to my office pc than it would be to carry a tablet around with me

I use my iPad all the time. Great for internet and email on the go and with Logmein Ignition it's brilliant. I use it more than my laptop.

I use one for making notes and using Citrix app for remote access to server, as well as password changes etc . also for SLG and printer credits web interface.

 

Wouldnt call it a revolution, just makes things a little bit easier.

I use an iPad for RDP, Logmein, VNC and all of our web based tools that I need to get at on the hoof.

 

I fooled one of our Mac lovers recently by having an RDP session up and running and telling him I managed to install Windows Server 2008 on it. I thought he was going to faint

I use my iphone 4 for all sorts when I'm out on call. It's loads quicker to setup a router or change a wireless key than turning on my not so fast work laptop. Here's some apps I like and use quite a bit;

iNet - network scanner

Speedtest.net

WiFiFoFum - wireless network scanner

Teamviewer

WifiPass - remembers passwords for wireless networks you've joined

Nothing to do with 'posing'. Its a tool for a job. a 4" screen is not big enough IMO for doing the sort of tasks mentioned. Logging in at random machines is annoying and inefficient. Having a 7-10" screen which can easily be slung in a shoulder harness as shown earlier which you can instantly do tasks just seems sensible to me.

Depends on how good the resolution is and how good your eyesight is

 

With the open accessory stuff from android you are probably more likely to fing a phone/tablet to serial port adapter which is rather handy technically.

I use my iPAD reguarly for note taking and calendar mainly.

 

I also can check on my vSphere servers and remote in where necessary.

 

It's also useful for checking on tickets via our helpdesk, but I tend to pick them up via e-mail.

Mainly use my iPad for Angry Birds but also use PocketCloud for remote desktop / password resets and the service desk for logging jobs.
